The new century brought innovation, creative business environments, and above all, new competitors to some sectors. One of them is the airline sector that besides being very dynamic is highly competitive and vulnerable to external factors. The new changes impact directly in the way the product/service is presented and sold with consequences for the demand and tourism flows. After the deregulation process that happen in USA on the '70s and in Europe in the late '90s, the airline sector adjust their business models to the new trends and market changes, regulations, new competitors, and above all, to the new demand profile. This new business models brought new perspectives with more flexible and innovative services and products in order to follow market trends and to attract new boosting tourism demand. Despite the business model, air transportation is essential for some tourism destinations, mainly the ones that are very dependent on one single airline typology or with particular geographical features and needs.

Tourism is a strategic sector in Portugal since it generates employment and it is a factor of economic and social development. The tourism sector not only has an intensive need of labour force but also provides employment opportunity to a range of qualifications. Being an industry of people, it directly depends on the performance of activities, skills, professionalism, quality and competitiveness. The main objective of this article is to present the HC Tourism project, which aims to seek and understand the needs of skills in tourism industry by studying the active companies that belong to the tourism economic subsectors, by region and subsector of economic activity. The methodology used in this project is based on a qualitative and quantitative approach, throughout the collection of primary and secondary data. The qualitative approach was based on a literature review which allowed to compile a list of 150 skills, divided under four domains: i) soft skills; ii) hard skills; iii) management skills; iv) transversal skills. The quantitative approach returned primary data, which were collected through an online survey implemented and sent to national tourist entrepreneurs, expecting to develop the ideal profile of the tourism human resources, based on a sample of 555 answers.

Mobility is one of the characteristics of modern society. The world today, despite the uncertainties brought by globalization is an interconnected reality of networks, whether physical or virtual. In Europe this mobility is higher than before due to the new offer of routes and frequencies of airlines, mainly of the low cost carriers (LCC).Portugal is one of the countries that grew in terms of new routes, new destinations and above all new customers with economic impacts in the regions. Over the last decade, LCC at Oporto (OPO) airport have boosted their traffic volume by approximately 260%. The evolution of OPO airport, generated by LCC, has meant that other regional airports have followed this trend and have also experienced a positive and growing net impact on their local economy. The main issue of this study is to analyse the evolution of LCC air traffic at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in OPO and its economic impact on this airport’s area of influence. We use a cost-benefit analysis model to determine the costs, benefits and net impact of low cost routes on the development of the local economy between 2005 and 2012. In 2005 these carriers started operating at OPO Airport.
