Background: Pomgranate (Punica granatum) represents a high source of polyphenols with great bioavailability. The role of this fruit in the prevention and treatment of various malignant pathologies has been long time cited in both scientific and non-scientific literature, making thus important to identify its involvement in the pathophysiological processes. The treatment for breast cancer had focused on the inhibition of the mechanisms that governs the estrogen activity. These mechanisms are covered either by the antagonism of the estrogen receptor (ER) or by the inhibition of the estrogen synthesis. Our interest in identifying a bioactive compound rich in polyphenols, which induces both the antagonism of the estrogen receptor, and the inhibition of the estrogen synthesis, revealed us the pomegranate fruit and its derivatives: peel and seeds. Pomegranates’ chemical composition include many biological active substances such as flavonols, flavanols, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, ellagitannins and gallotannins. Materials and Methods: We performed a review of the scientific literature by using the following keywords: “pomegranate”, “breast cancer”, “Punica granatum”, “pomegranate polyphenols”. Our search was performed in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, and it included only original research written in English from the last 20 years. None of the articles were excluded due to affiliation. A total number of 28 original papers, which mentioned the beneficial activity of pomegranate against breast cancer, were selected. Both clinical and preclinical studies were considered for this review. Results: Recent discoveries pointed out that polyphenols from Punica granatum possess strong anti-cancer activity, exhibited by a variety of mechanisms, such as anti-estrogenic, anti-proliferative, anti-angiogenetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-metastatic. Pomegranate extracts induced cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase, and induced cytotoxicity in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Moreover, several polyphenols extracted from pomegranate inhibited the invasion potential, migration and viability of breast cancer cells. The effects of pomegranate juice on serum estrogens and other sexual hormones levels were also investigated on two human cohorts. Conclusions: Punica granatum represents a promising area in oncology. The large availability and low cost, associated with the lack of side effects, made from this natural product a great strategy for the management of breast cancer. There are several mechanistic studies in mouse models and in breast cancer cell lines, suggesting the possible pathways through which polyphenols from pomegranate extracts act, but larger and better-controlled studies are necessary in the future. Only two small clinical trials were conducted on humans until now, but their results are contradictory and should be considered preliminary.

Adolescence represents a critical developmental stage where diet, gut microorganisms, and mental health are strongly interconnected. The current literature evidences the bidirectional role between dietary habits and psychological well-being, which is mediated by the gut–brain axis. The purpose of this review is to highlight the importance of dietary habits in adolescence period and the impact of different food choices on microbiota and secondary on mental health. Gut microbiota plays a vital role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, and metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The disruption in the composition of microbiota is called dysbiosis, which has been associated with a systemic inflammation state and chronic stress. They contribute to the onset of psychiatric disorders including MDD, anxiety, ADHD, and autism. Diets with a high quantity of sugar and low fiber contribute to alteration of microbiota and poor mental health. Additionally, early-life stress, antibiotic usage, and chronic inflammation may alter bacterial communities, with long-term implications for adolescents mental health. Dietary interventions, including the intake of prebiotics, probiotics, SCFAs, and micronutrients could restore microbial balance and improve psychiatric symptoms. This literature review highlights the critical role of diet and gut microbiota for adolescent mental health and emphasizes the need for integrative strategies to promote psychological resilience through microbiome regulation.

The application of nanoparticles in agriculture has garnered significant attention due to their potential to enhance plant growth, resistance to stress, and overall productivity. Nanoparticles can trigger physiological and biochemical changes in plants, promoting growth under both optimal and suboptimal environmental conditions. This review explores the mechanisms by which nanoparticles interact with plants, focusing on their role in improving nutrient uptake, stimulating growth, enhancing stress tolerance, and modulating plant metabolic pathways. Furthermore, it examines metal-based nanoparticles that have shown promising biostimulatory effects, their synthesis methods, and their applications in different agricultural systems. Despite the promising results, challenges remain, such as toxicity, environmental impact, and regulatory hurdles, which are crucial for the safe integration of nanoparticles into agricultural practices. The present review article aims to provide a brief overview of the current state of research on nanoparticle-based plant growth enhancers, and their potential to revolutionize sustainable agriculture.

(1) Introduction: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is widely used in breast cancer patients who undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), replacing axillary lymph node dissection. While commonly accepted for cN0 patients, its role in cN1/2 patients remains controversial. Our study aims to investigate the role of SLNB in BC patients who underwent prior NAC and compare our results to those of other studies presented in the literature. (2) Materials and methods: Our retrospective study included 102 breast cancer patients who received NAC before 99mTc-albumin Nanocolloid SLN mapping and SLNB was performed, completed or not with axillary dissection. A review based on the PRISMA statement was also carried out, encompassing 20 studies. (3) Results: The lymphoscintigraphy performed after the administration of NAC presented an identification rate (IR) of 93.13%. IR for SLNB was 94.11%, with a false-negative rate (FNR) of 7.4%. After a median follow-up of 31.3 months, we obtained a distant disease-free survival rate of 98%. The results obtained by other groups were similar to those of our study, presenting IR in the range 80.8–96.8%, with FNR varying from 0 to 22%. (4) Conclusions: on conclusion, SLNB can accurately determine the lymph node status, with an acceptable FNR and maintain its expected prognostic role with low recurrence rates, and our results are comparable to those obtained by other studies.

Background: The prevalence of dental caries has increased among children, largely due to nutritional habits or inadequate access to dental care. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of dental caries associated with various factors that lead to their appearance, such as food intake and body composition, among Romanian school-age children from two counties, Bistriţa Năsăud and Mureş. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1100 children aged 6–10 years from two Romanian counties. Dental caries experience was assessed using the DMFT and dmft indices based on WHO criteria. Dietary intake and oral health behaviors were evaluated through a food frequency questionnaire completed by parents. Associations between dietary variables and dental caries were assessed using independent sample t-tests and Mann–Whitney U tests. A binary logistic regression model was used to estimate the likelihood of caries in the permanent dentition (DMFT > 0), with covariates including county, parental education, daily sugar intake, consumption of dairy products, body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-height ratio. Results: It was found that the children who daily consume cheese recorded a DMFT value lower than the children who did not consume (p < 0.05). Moreover, those who consume sugary foods recorded higher values of DMFT as compared with those who did not (p < 0.05). The body weight, BMI, and waist circumference are positively correlated with DMFT, but negatively with dmft (p < 0.05). The overall prevalence of caries was 79.8% in primary dentition and 63.6% in permanent dentition, with slightly higher rates observed in Bistriţa-Năsăud County compared to Mureş. It seems that the predictors of the caries’s presence among children include the mother’s education level, sugar intake frequency, and body fat ratio. Conclusions: Based on significant associations found, one can affirm that the dental caries of the Romanian school-age children is due to sugary food intake and body composition. In addition, the direct relationship between dental caries and childhood obesity showed through the correlation of BMI and dental health indices denotes that school-age children should reduce sugary foods and increase dairy products.

Background and Objectives: Exclusive breastfeeding offers optimal nutrition and health benefits for infants, yet many mothers face challenges that impact their ability to breastfeed. This study aimed to explore breastfeeding practices among Romanian mothers and identify factors associated with successful exclusive breastfeeding. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from February to March 2025, targeting Romanian mothers via social media platforms. The questionnaire, developed specifically for this study, collected data on sociodemographics, birth and neonatal variables, hospital practices, feeding intentions, community influences, and breastfeeding outcomes. A total of 874 valid responses were analyzed using Fisher’s exact tests and multivariable logistic regression. Results: While 87.2% of mothers intended to breastfeed, only 56.1% reported exclusive breastfeeding. Factors significantly associated with reduced likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding included maternal age ≥ 30 years (OR = 1.40, p = 0.042), Cesarean delivery (OR = 1.78, p < 0.001), absence of rooming-in (OR = 2.32, p < 0.001), and pacifier use (OR > 4.7, p < 0.001). Protective factors included non-smoking status (OR = 0.52, p < 0.001) and encouragement to breastfeed by medical staff (OR = 1.60, p = 0.004). Despite external advice to use formula, many mothers continued breastfeeding. Conclusions: Although breastfeeding intention was high, exclusive breastfeeding remains suboptimal in Romania. Targeted support—particularly in maternity hospitals and for mothers recovering from Cesarean sections—alongside prenatal education and consistent postnatal guidance are essential to bridge the gap between intention and practice.
