Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are capable of enhancing the capacity of wireless networks at a low cost. In practical RIS-assisted communication systems, the acquisition of channel state information (CSI) and RIS reflection optimization constitute a pair of challenges. In this paper, a low-complexity channel estimation and passive beamforming design is proposed. First of all , we conceive a low-complexity framework for maximizing the achievable rate of RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems having discrete phase shifts at each RIS element. In contrast to existing solutions, the proposed arrangement partitions the channel training stage into several phases, where the RIS reflection coefficients are pre-designed and the effective superposed channel is estimated instead of separately training the source-destination and source-RIS-destination links. Based on this, the active beamformer can be designed at low complexity and the RIS reflection optimization is performed by selecting that one from the pre-designed training set which maximizes the achievable rate. Secondly , we propose novel techniques for generating the training set of RIS reflection coefficients. The theoretical performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed and compared to the optimal RIS configuration. Finally , our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework is more competitive than its existing counterparts when relying on imperfect CSI, especially for rapidly time-varying channels having short channel coherence time.

To mitigate the effects of shadow fading and obstacle blocking, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a promising technology to improve the signal transmission quality of wireless communications by controlling the reconfigurable passive elements with less hardware cost and lower power consumption. However, accurate, low-latency and low-pilot-overhead channel state information (CSI) acquisition remains a considerable challenge in RIS-assisted systems due to the large number of RIS passive elements. In this paper, we propose a three-stage joint channel decomposition and prediction framework to acquire CSI. The proposed framework exploits the two-timescale property that the base station (BS)-RIS channel is quasi-static and the RIS-user equipment (UE) channel is fast time-varying. Specifically, in the first stage, we use the full-duplex technique to estimate the channel between a BS’s specific antenna and the RIS, addressing the critical scaling ambiguity problem in the channel decomposition. We then design a novel deep neural network, namely, the sparse-connected long short-term memory (SCLSTM), and propose a SCLSTM-based algorithm in the second and third stages, respectively. The algorithm can simultaneously decompose the BS-RIS channel and RIS-UE channel from the cascaded channel and capture the temporal relationship of the RIS-UE channel for prediction. Simulation results show that our proposed framework has lower pilot overhead than the traditional channel estimation algorithms, and the proposed SCLSTM-based algorithm can also achieve more accurate CSI acquisition robustly and effectively.

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems have gained increasing attention as a crucial supplement to terrestrial wireless networks due to their extensive coverage area. This letter presents a novel system design for LEO satellite systems by leveraging stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM) technology. Specifically, the lightweight and energy-efficient SIM is mounted on a satellite to achieve multiuser beamforming directly in the electromagnetic wave domain, which substantially reduces the processing delay and computational load of the satellite compared to the traditional digital beamforming scheme. To overcome the challenges of obtaining instantaneous channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and maximize the system’s performance, a joint power allocation and SIM phase shift optimization problem for maximizing the ergodic sum rate is formulated based on statistical CSI, and an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is customized to solve it efficiently. Additionally, a user grouping method based on channel correlation and an antenna selection algorithm are proposed to further improve the system performance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SIM-based LEO satellite system design and statistical CSI-based AO algorithm.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a promising technology to improve wireless communication in recent years. It steers the incident signals to create a favorable propagation environment by controlling the reconfigurable passive elements with less hardware cost and lower power consumption. In this paper, we consider a RIS-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output downlink communication system. We aim to maximize the weighted sum-rate of all users by joint optimizing the active beamforming at the access point and the passive beamforming vector of the RIS elements. Unlike most existing works, we consider the more practical situation with the discrete phase shifts and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, for the situation that the discrete phase shifts and perfect CSI are considered, we first develop a deep quantization neural network (DQNN) to simultaneously design the active and passive beamforming while most reported works design them alternatively. Then, we propose an improved structure (I-DQNN) based on DQNN to simplify the parameters decision process when the control bits of each RIS element are greater than 1 bit. Finally, we extend the two proposed DQNN-based algorithms to the case that the discrete phase shifts and imperfect CSI are considered simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the two DQNN-based algorithms have better performance than traditional algorithms in the perfect CSI case, and are also more robust in the imperfect CSI case.

Stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM) have recently emerged as a promising technology, which can realize transmit precoding in the wave domain. In this paper, we investigate a SIM-aided integrated sensing and communications system, in which SIM is capable of generating a desired beam pattern for simultaneously communicating with multiple downlink users and detecting a radar target. Specifically, we formulate an optimization problem of maximizing the spectrum efficiency, while satisfying the power constraint of the desired direction. This requires jointly designing the phase shifts of the SIM and the power allocation at the base station. By incorporating the sensing power constraint into the objective functions as a penalty term, we further simplify the optimization problem and solve it by customizing an efficient gradient ascent algorithm. Finally, extensive numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed wave-domain precoder for automatically mitigating the inter-user interference and generating a desired beampattern for the sensing task, as multiple separate data streams transmit through the SIM.

In reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted systems the acquisition of channel state information and the optimization of reflecting coefficients constitute major design challenges. In this paper, a novel channel training-based protocol is proposed, which is capable of striking a flexible trade-off between performance, pilot overhead and complexity. More specifically, first of all , we conceive a holistic protocol that intrinsically amalgamates the existing channel estimation and passive beamforming optimization for creating a new unified scheme. Secondly , we propose a new channel training framework. In contrast to the conventional channel estimation arrangements, our new framework divides the training phase into several periods and has the compelling benefit of directly estimating the superimposed end-to-end channel instead of separately estimating the direct BS-user and reflected RIS links, which would not lend itself to near-instantaneous reconfiguration in the face of high-Doppler mobility. As a result, the RIS reflecting coefficients are optimized by comparing the objective function values over multiple training periods, which leads to optimal performance, despite its reduced complexity as well as reduced signaling and pilot overhead. Thirdly , we analyze the theoretical performance of both the channel estimation-based protocol and the channel training-based protocol in the presence of channel estimation errors. Finally , our theoretical analysis is confirmed by numerical simulations. In particular, the simulation results demonstrate that our channel training-based protocol is more competitive than the channel estimation-based protocol in the presence of channel estimation errors.
