Localization technology for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) plays an important role in detection and navigation for underwater vehicles. In this paper, we therefore propose a novel localization scheme for UWSNs based on the propagation loss, named Communication Signal Propagation Loss Localization Scheme (CSPLLS). CSPLLS is a cooperative, passive, asynchronously distributed localization method where the target only uses communication signal’s strength from anchor nodes. The method is appropriate for a long-distance and large-scale positioning in shallow sea. Main innovative point of the research is to locate with a new rang-based method using signal propagation loss. Experiment and simulation results are presented in the paper which confirms that the proposed scheme provides a relatively high precision of as low as 2.2% positioning error with centroid optimization. Major advantages of this method includes: 1) getting rid of clock resources usually used in each node for localization, 2) reducing the total localization time, 3) saving the energy of each node which prolongs the lifetime of networks and 4) realize the design of underwater communication and localization integration.

This paper proposes a deep transfer learning (DTL)-based variable Doppler frequency-hopping binary frequency-shift keying underwater acoustic communication system. The system uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) as the demodulation module of the receiver. This approach directly demodulates the received signal without estimating the Doppler. The DTL first uses the simulated communication signal data to complete the CNN training. It then copies a part of the convolution layers from the pre-trained CNN to the target CNN. After randomly initializing the remaining layers for the target CNN, it is trained by the data samples from the specific communication scenarios. During the training process, the CNN learns the corresponding frequency from each symbol in the selected frequency-hopping group through the Mel-spectrograms. Simulation and experimental data processing results show that the performance of the proposed system is better than conventional systems, especially when the transmitter and receiver of the communication system are in variable speed motion in shallow water acoustic channels.

Underwater acoustic communications are challenging because channels are complex, and acoustic waves when propagating in the ocean are subjected to a variety of interferences, such as noise, reflections, scattering and so on. Spread spectrum technique thus has been widely used in underwater acoustic communications for its strong anti-interference ability and good confidentiality. Underwater acoustic channels are typical coherent multipath channels, in which the inter-symbol interference seriously affects the performance of underwater acoustic communications. Time-reversal mirror technique utilizes this physical characteristic of underwater acoustic channels to restrain the inter-symbol interference by reconstructing multipath signals and reduce the influence of channel fading by spatial focusing. This paper presents an M-ary cyclic shift keying spread spectrum underwater acoustic communication scheme based on the virtual time-reversal mirror. Compared to the traditional spread spectrum techniques, this method is more robust, for it uses the M-ary cyclic shift keying spread spectrum to improve the communication rate and uses the virtual time-reversal mirror to ensure a low bit error rate. The performance of this method is verified by simulations and pool experiments.

Time synchronization is the foundation of cooperative work among nodes of underwater sensor networks; it takes a critical role in the research and application of underwater sensor networks. Although numerous time synchronization protocols have been proposed for terrestrial wireless sensor networks, they cannot be directly applied to underwater sensor networks. This is because most of them typically assume that the propagation delay among sensor nodes is negligible, which is not the case in underwater sensor networks. Time synchronization is mainly affected by a long propagation delay among sensor nodes due to the low propagation speed of acoustic signals. Furthermore, sensor nodes in underwater tend to experience some degree of mobility due to wind or ocean current, or some other nodes are on self-propelled vehicles, such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). In this paper, we propose a Doppler-enhanced time synchronization scheme for mobile underwater sensor networks, called DE-Sync. Our new scheme considers the effect of the clock skew during the process of estimating the Doppler scale factor and directly substitutes the Doppler scale factor into linear regression to achieve the estimation of the clock skew and offset. Simulation results show that DE-Sync outperforms existing time synchronization protocols in both accuracy and energy efficiency.

Underwater wireless communication has gained a great deal of attention in the last couple of decades because of its applications in the military, industrial, and monitoring sectors. Despite the extreme physical and MAC layer difficulties, acoustics are used for various applications among the various modes of underwater communication technologies used. While significant research efforts have been made to address these issues, the bottleneck remains in achieving high bandwidth, high throughputs, and data rate. Researchers have begun to look into full duplex (FD) implementation to improve bandwidth efficiency and increase data rate and throughput. Users can send and receive data simultaneously over the FD links, maximizing bandwidth utilization and increasing throughput. As a result, we thoroughly reviewed various FD physical layered UWAC systems and MAC layered protocols for underwater communication. The various problems that the aforementioned systems and protocols have faced, as well as the solutions suggested in previous works to solve each problem, are also highlighted. Various metrics are used to compare the performance of various physical layered FD systems and FD MAC protocols. We also explore some of the open research questions in these FD-physical layered and MAC layered protocols, as well as future research directions. Based on ample information, we suggest a cross-layered architecture based on various IBFD-SI cancellations, DA-CSMA, and FD-MAC protocols. This review provides a broad view of the current FD physical and MAC layered protocols based on acoustic communication, as well as recommendations.

This letter proposes a correlation detection algorithm based on multi-channelization. The existing method has poor performance for detecting a time-varying signal with a low signal-to-noise ratio(SNR). To overcome this problem, we use the method of correlation summation after multi-channelization. According to the difference between the correlation between signals and noise in the received data, the single-channel data is converted into multi-channel data by a multi-channelization method without changing the signals. Then the noise is filtered by correlation calculation of multi-channel data, which can improve the detection probability of signals under low SNR. Based on the theory of multi-channelization, we propose two different methods to detect signals. To better reflect the performance of the algorithm, we compared several classical signal detection methods, such as energy detection (ED), correlation detection (CD), and cyclic spectrum detection (CSD). Simulation analysis and experimental results show that the multi-channelization correlation detection algorithm has better detection performance when the SNR is low.
