There will be a dearth of electrical energy in the prospective world due to exponential increase in electrical energy demand of rapidly growing world population. With the development of internet-of-things (IoT), more smart devices will be integrated into residential buildings in smart cities that actively participate in electricity market via demand response (DR) programs to efficiently manage energy in order to meet this increasing energy demand. Thus, with this incitement, an energy management strategy using price-based DR program is developed for IoT-enabled residential buildings. We propose a wind-driven bacterial foraging algorithm (WBFA), which is a hybrid of wind-driven optimization (WDO) and bacterial foraging optimization (BFO) algorithms. Subsequently, we devised a strategy based on our proposed WBFA to systematically manage the power usage of IoT-enabled residential building smart appliances by scheduling to alleviate peak-to-average ratio (PAR), minimize cost of electricity, and maximize user comfort (UC). This increases effective energy utilization, which in turn increases the sustainability of IoT-enabled residential buildings in smart cities. The WBFA-based strategy automatically responds to price-based DR programs to combat the major problem of the DR programs, which is the limitation of consumer’s knowledge to respond upon receiving DR signals. To endorse productiveness and effectiveness of the proposed WBFA-based strategy, substantial simulations are carried out. Furthermore, the proposed WBFA-based strategy is compared with benchmark strategies including binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) algorithm, genetic algorithm (GA), genetic wind driven optimization (GWDO) algorithm, and genetic binary particle swarm optimization (GBPSO) algorithm in terms of energy consumption, cost of electricity, PAR, and UC. Simulation results show that the proposed WBFA-based strategy outperforms the benchmark strategies in terms of performance metrics.

Use of magnetic fields for underwater wireless communication recently has been found very promising due to its advantages of being low power, low cost, no multipath, no Doppler effect and instant communication. Keeping in view the importance and the potential of magnetic field communication for underwater wireless sensor networks, this paper presents a review of the fundamental concepts and theory of magnetic field communication by identifying the main blocks, describing the limitation of each block and mentioning the advancements being done. The three fundamental blocks identified are: 1) the transmit and receive coils, 2) matching network, and 3) channel characteristics of magnetic fields. The first block explains how a single dimensional coil is used to establish a directional communication link between a transmitter & receiver and then how the directionality problem is solved with the help of multi-dimensional coils and meta-material coils. Further, the matching network, explains the difference between the induction and resonance phenomena and their effect on the range and capacity. In the third block, the factors affecting the magnetic fields are mentioned that are critical for underwater wireless communication with magnetic fields. Finally, the paper introduces the recent advancements at physical, MAC and network layers.
A structural health monitoring (SHM) system is an approach for identifying the damages caused to various kinds of structures using different system functions and providing the necessary feedback about structure’s conditions. As civil structures are the backbone of our society, to determine its daily operations is a very important issue. The performance measurement of those structures is manual whereas a computer-based monitoring system could automatically assess the structural damages and identify its exact location. Recently, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted a great deal of attention for remote sensing applications due to flexibility to measure of various activity of large scale network. Since technology is advancing day by day, the overall cost of a monitoring system is also decreased. However, the major challenging fact of a WSNs is to provide scalability for covering a large area. The main question is arisen how much capable have of a monitoring system to turn off unnecessary nodes to save energy while there are no events detected. To support the scalability required of an existing network and save the node energy for future use, we propose a topology maintenance protocol integrated with construction to address the issue of a node’s energy consumption by placing it optimally and extending the monitoring system’s lifetime. As per the authors’ acknowledgement that, a little attention has been paid to developing such a hybrid approach. To mitigate node energy consumption issue with large scale support, an Internet of Things (IoT)-based maintenance approach is the best candidate for obtaining better system lifetime responses. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to develop an ‘on-the-fly’-based topology maintenance monitoring system, which can maintain a network’s infrastructure while gathering a node’s information to switch its state regularly when the present network is no longer optimal.
The Doppler effect severely degrades the orthogonality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, and is a severe problem in the underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, leading to nonuniform Doppler shifts for all subcarriers. In order to alleviate Doppler effect, resampling technique by oversized fast Fourier transform (FFT) can achieve fast and accurate resampling in frequency domain. Nevertheless, the accuracy of this conventional FFT based approach depends on the FFT size, which in turn increases receiver complexity. In order to overcome this problem, the Doppler compensation model in frequency domain is simplified by Taylor series expansion in this letter. Based on the simplified model, we propose the Doppler compensation algorithm by using FFT and interpolation to achieve higher compensation accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm shows very similar bit error rate (BER) performance with that of Chirp Z-transform (CZT) based method. However, the complexity of our proposed algorithm is about half of CZT based method. Further, our proposed low-complexity Doppler compensation algorithm can also be applied to the sampling frequency offset (SFO) correction in terrestrial OFDM communication systems.
Conventional RSA algorithm, being a basis for several proposed cryptosystems, has remarkable security laps with respect to confidentiality and integrity over the internet which can be compromised by state-of-the-art attacks, especially, for different types of data generation, transmission, and analysis by IoT applications. This security threat hindrance is considered to be a hard problem to solve on classical computers. However, bringing quantum mechanics into account, the concept no longer holds true. So, this calls out for the modification of the conventional pre-quantum RSA algorithm into a secure post-quantum cryptographic-based RSA technique. In this research, we propose a post-quantum lattice-based RSA (LBRSA) for IoT applications in order to secure the shared data and information. The proposed work is validated by implementing it in 60-dimensions. The key size is about 1.152 × 105-bits and generation time is 0.8 hours. Furthermore, it has been tested with AVISPA, which confirms security in the presence of an intruder. Moreover, the proposed LB-RSA technique is compared with the existing state-of-the-art techniques. The empirical results advocate that the proposed lattice-based variant is not only safe but beats counterparts in terms of secured data sharing.

In this paper, we present a review of the research literature regarding applying X-ray imaging of baggage scrutiny at airport. It discusses multiple X-ray imaging inspection systems used in airports for detecting dangerous objects inside the baggage. Moreover, it also explains the dual energy X-ray image fusion and image enhancement factors. Different types of noises in digital images and noise models are explained in length. Diagrammatical representations for different noise models are presented and illustrated to clearly show the effect of Poisson and Impulse noise on intensity values. Overall, this review discusses in detail of Poisson and Impulse noise, as well as its causes and effect on the X-ray images, which create un-certainty for the X-ray inspection imaging system while discriminating objects and for the screeners as well. The review then focuses on image processing techniques used by different research studies for X-ray image enhancement, de-noising, and their limitations. Furthermore, the most related approaches for noise reduction and its drawbacks are presented. The methods that may be useful to overcome the drawbacks are also discussed in subsequent sections of this paper. In summary, this review paper highlights the key theories and technical methods used for X-ray image enhancement and de-noising effect on X-ray images generated by the airport baggage inspection system.
