Automatic modulation classification is a task that is essentially required in many intelligent communication systems such as fibre‐optic, next‐generation 5G or 6G systems, cognitive radio as well as multimedia internet‐of‐things networks etc. Deep learning (DL) is a representation learning method that takes raw data and finds representations for different tasks such as classification and detection. DL techniques like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have a strong potential to process and analyse large chunks of data. In this work, we considered the problem of multiclass (eight classes) classification of modulated signals, which are, Binary Phase Shift Keying, Quadrature Phase Shift Keying, 16 and 64 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation corrupted by Additive White Gaussian Noise, Rician and Rayleigh fading channels using 3D‐CNN architectures in both frequency and spatial domains while deploying three approaches for data augmentation, which are, random zoomed in/out, random shift and random weak Gaussian blurring augmentation techniques with a cross‐validation (CV) based hyperparameter selection statistical approach. Simulation results testify the performance of 10‐fold CV without augmentation in the spatial domain to be the best while the worst performing method happens to be 10‐fold CV without augmentation in the frequency domain and we found learning in the spatial domain to be better than learning in the frequency domain.

High frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) has been successfully developed for early warning and remote sensing. However, the ionospheric clutter is a difficult challenge that can make HFSWR system inefficient. The Generalized Side-lobe Canceller (GSC) has been proved to be an effective algorithm for clutter suppression in theory, but it suffers from the performance degradation for some non-ideal conditions in practice. The most intolerable shortcoming is the signal to noise ratio (SNR) loss caused by the residual signal in the secondary data. In this paper, a knowledge-based GSC (KB-GSC) method has been proposed via an adaptive single notch filter design to reject the residual signal for reducing the SNR loss. The feasibility and availability has been demonstrated by measured data.

The broadened first-order sea clutter in shipborne high frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR), which will mask the targets with low radial velocity, is a kind of classical space–time coupled clutter. Space–time adaptive processing (STAP) has been proven to be an effective clutter suppression algorithm for space-time coupled clutter. To further improve the efficiency of clutter suppression, a STAP method based on a generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) structure, named as the auxiliary channel STAP, was introduced into shipborne HFSWR. To obtain precise clutter information for the clutter covariance matrix (CCM) estimation, an approach based on the prior knowledge to auxiliary channel selection is proposed. Auxiliary channels are selected along the clutter ridge of the first-order sea clutter, whose distribution can be determined by the system parameters and regarded as pre-knowledge. To deal with the heterogeneity of the spreading first-order sea clutter, an innovative training samples selection approach according to the Riemannian distance is presented. The range cells that had shorter Riemannian distances to the cell under test (CUT) were chosen as training samples. Experimental results with measured data verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and the comparison with the existing clutter suppression algorithms showed the superiority of the algorithm.

In high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR), part of the radiation signal inevitably propagates upward and illuminates the target through the ionosphere due to the poor controllability of the antenna’s vertical pattern. As a result, a target may have several echoes from different propagation modes, which affect target detection and tracking and is usually unmanageable in existing HFSWR systems. Without the information of the elevation angle, it is difficult to distinguish the propagation mode of measurements during the target detection phase. This paper makes the first attempt to propose a multi-mode target tracker for HFSWR to solve this problem during the target tracking phase. The multipath probability data association (MPDA) tracker is capable of exploiting multipath target signatures of discrete propagation modes and has been widely used. Based on this, we construct a modified multi-mode probability data association tracker for HFSWR to suppress false tracks caused by multiple propagation modes. Numerical simulations demonstrate that this novel tracker can effectively and accurately track the target from the measurements under multiple propagation modes in HFSWR. The processing results of the actual data collected in Weihai, China indicate that this tracker is of great significance for practical applications.

A method of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using array interpolation is proposed in this paper to increase the number of resolvable sources and improve the DOA estimation performance for coprime array configuration with holes in its virtual array. The virtual symmetric nonuniform linear array (VSNLA) of coprime array signal model is introduced, with the conventional MUSIC with spatial smoothing algorithm (SS-MUSIC) applied on the continuous lags in the VSNLA; the degrees of freedom (DoFs) for DOA estimation are obviously not fully exploited. To effectively utilize the extent of DoFs offered by the coarray configuration, a compressing sensing based array interpolation algorithm is proposed. The compressing sensing technique is used to obtain the coarse initial DOA estimation, and a modified iterative initial DOA estimation based interpolation algorithm (IMCA-AI) is then utilized to obtain the final DOA estimation, which maps the sample covariance matrix of the VSNLA to the covariance matrix of a filled virtual symmetric uniform linear array (VSULA) with the same aperture size. The proposed DOA estimation method can efficiently improve the DOA estimation performance. The numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The direction of arrival (DOA) estimation problem using co‐prime linear arrays is studied. By analysing the special array geometry of the co‐prime array, the co‐prime array is taken as a filled uniform linear array where some elements are omitted, then a modified root‐multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is developed, which avoids the matching process by obtaining the true DOAs without phase ambiguity. In addition, it can detect more sources by making full use of the degrees of freedom provided by the co‐prime array. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
