Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the behaviour and knowledge skill levels of Turkish orthopedic surgeons about fluoroscopy usage and radiation safety. Methods The questionnaire, consisting of nineteen questions, was sent to orthopaedic surgeons and requested by a total of 323 surgeons online. The questions were about personal information, training and behaviours related to radiation and fluoroscopy usage, and the use of protective equipment. Results A total of 277 individuals completed the questionnaire. The answers of 180 surgeons whose working duration was more than 1 year and also who participated in at least one fluoroscopy requiring operation per week, were analysed. 22 (12%) participants answered that they were trained on fluoroscopy usage. Sixty people (33.3%) reported that they did not use any protective equipment regularly. The most commonly used protection methods were lead aprons 123 (68.3%). Thyroid protectors were used by 92 participants (52.1%). There was no significant difference between the groups when comparing the use of protective equipment according to the academic title. Only 19 (10.6%) of the surgeons noted that they used dosimeter regularly, and 15 (83.3%) of them reported that they controlled their dosimeters. Conclusion In this study, Orthopedic surgeons were found not to be adequately trained about use and risks of fluoroscopy and also not to be equipped about methods for preventing radiation damage.

The current study aimed to determine the onset of sesamoid bones (Sbs) ossification at the thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the hand and its relationship with puberty. This retrospective radiographic study included patients aged 5-17 years. The presence of Sbs was investigated separately for each age group. Patients were classified based on their age, gender, and the presence of radial and ulnar sesamoids. A total of 1,020 radiographs from 939 patients were analyzed. Sbs began to ossify in girls at the age of 8 years and in boys at the age of 9 years. The ulnar-radial sesamoids were present in all individuals in the same age group at the age of 13-14 years in girls and 15 years in boys. The age at which 50% of the individuals in the same age group had a sesamoid was 10.4 years in girls and 11.9 years in boys on the radial side, 9.5 years in girls, and 11.5 years in boys on the ulnar side. In all individuals, the time between the onset of sesamoids of the MCP joint and development corresponds to the physiological period of puberty. However, the age at which puberty begins coincides with the time when Sbs begin to ossify in 50% of both sexes in the same age group.

Background and Objectives: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) morphology refers to structural abnormalities that can alter normal joint mechanics and potentially lead to early onset osteoarthritis. Although commonly diagnosed in symptomatic individuals, such morphological features are also found in asymptomatic adults, underlining their relevance for early detection and preventive management. This study aimed to evaluate the three-dimensional congruence of hip joint surfaces in relation to FAI and the morphology of asymptomatic hips with potential FAI features. Materials and Methods: Retrospective three-dimensional reconstructions of 86 hip joints were created using Mimics software from computed tomography (CT) scans of the lower abdomen and pelvis retrieved from the radiology archive. CT scans belonged to individuals with preserved anatomical integrity (20 females, 23 males, bilateral hips), aged 24–76 years. Lateral center-edge angle (LCEA) and alpha angle measurements were obtained from reconstructions to assess the risk of asymptomatic FAI. Results: Significant gender differences were found in alpha angles. The mean right alpha angle was 46.57 ± 3.12° in females and 49.28 ± 6.66° in males p = 0.046, while the mean left alpha angle was 43.75 ± 5.53° in females and 47.37 ± 5.77° in males p = 0.021. An alpha angle >50°, suggestive of cam type FAI, was present in 25.6% of right hips and 13.9% of left hips. LCEA values showed no significant gender or side differences, with a mean of 30.21 ± 8.96° across the cohort. Conclusions: Three-dimensional evaluation of asymptomatic hips revealed FAI-consistent morphology in a notable proportion of individuals, particularly males. Cam-type deformities tended to occur bilaterally, whereas pincer-type morphologies were more sporadic and often unilateral. Increased alpha and LCEA measurements in asymptomatic individuals suggest that FAI morphology may exist subclinically without always indicating disease. Future studies incorporating longitudinal imaging and clinical follow-up are needed to clarify the prognostic significance of these findings.

Purpose: The aim of this stud was to compare the clinical and radiological results between Sinus-tarsi (ST) and Extended-Lateral (EL) approaches in open reduction internal fixation of intra-articular calcaneal fractures. Materials and Methods: 51 calcaneal fractures of 48 patients surgically treated between 2012 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups. Preoperative CT, early postoperative and postoperative 1st-year radiographs, and The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle-Hindfoot Score scores were evaluated. Results: According to the Sanders classification, nine patients in the EL group were type 2(36%), 16 patients type 3 (64%), 8 patients in ST group type 234.8%), 13 patients (56.5%) type 3, 2 patients (8.7%) type 4. The mean AOFAS-Hindfoot score was 85(63-100) in the ST group and 83(52-93) in the LE group at one year. Mean preoperative waiting time was shorter, with an average of 2(1-4) days in ST and 6(3-12) days in LE. Conclusion: ST approach shortens the preoperative waiting time in intra-articular calcaneal fracture surgery, provides a sufficient vision for anatomical restoration, and effectively avoids complications.
