Bacterial polyesters are a well-known group of polymers with excellent biocompability and biodegradability. They are also a renewable source of a wide array of enantiopure (R)-3-hydroxycarboxylic acids. In this study, a series of ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) systems were prepared using a mixture of microorganism-derived (R)-3-hydroxynonanoic and (R)-3-hydroxyheptanoic acids in a molar ratio of 7 : 3 as hydrogen-bond donors (HBDs) and selected quaternary ammonium salts as hydrogen-bond acceptors (HBAs), namely choline, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and tributylmethylammonium chlorides. For comparison, DESs based on aliphatic carboxylic acid analogues, i.e. nonanoic and heptanoic acids, were also studied. The systems were characterised by 1H NMR and FT-IR techniques and the formation of hydrogen bonds between the HBDs and HBAs was proved. The thermal properties, including the melting temperatures and thermal stabilities, as well as the polarity and wetting properties were determined by DSC, TGA, the Nile Red method and dynamic contact angle methods, respectively. The viscosity and density were measured over a temperature range of 30–60 °C. Cytotoxicity and biodegradation studies were conducted and revealed the non-toxic character of the choline-based DES. The ability of the DESs to dissolve lignin was also evaluated. The results demonstrated the potential for a new area of application of bacterial polyesters for the synthesis of novel bio-based solvents.

The verification of the blasting parameters of Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO) with the addition of microstructured charcoal (MC) produced by destructive wood distillation was performed. Additional investigation of specific surface and pore distribution by the nitrogen adsorption of the two granulations of MC was also carried out. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy was used for morphology evaluation and revealed smoothening of the initially developed external surface of carbon with intensive milling. In addition, the analysis of the thermal properties of the studied samples (TG/DSC) indicated that the size of the microstructured charcoal additives influenced the decomposition temperature of the prepared materials. The explosives containing microstructured charcoal grains of −90 μm underwent decomposition at lower temperatures in comparison with those containing higher sizes of microstructure charcoal grains (−1.18 mm), for which the decomposition temperature reached 292 °C. The obtained results of blasting parameters compared to the results derived from thermodynamic simulation showed the non-ideal character of the explosives (much lower values of blasting parameters than in established thermodynamic models). It was indicated that higher velocities of detonations (VOD) were obtained for non-ideal explosives where finer MC grains were added. Blasting tests confirmed that the studied type of MC can be applied as an additive to the ANFO.

Thin films of lead sulfide (PbS) are being extensively used for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices for commercial and military applications. In the present work, PbS films were fabricated onto a soda lime glass substrate by using an electron beam (e-beam) evaporation technique at a substrate temperature of 300 °C. Samples were annealed in an open atmosphere at a temperature range of 200–450 °C for 2 h. The deposited films were characterized for structural, optical, and electrical properties. Structural properties of PbS have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). The results of XRD showed that the PbS thin film was crystalline in nature at room temperature with cubic crystal structure (galena) and preferential (111) and orientation (022). The morphology of the thin films was studied by FESEM, which also showed uniform and continuous deposition without any peel-off and patches. EDS analysis was performed to confirm the presence of lead and sulfur in as-deposited and annealed films. The thickness of the PbS film was found to be 172 nm, which is slightly greater than the intended thickness of 150 nm, determined by RBS. Ultraviolet-Visible-Near-Infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectroscopy revealed the maximum transmittance of ~25% for as-deposited films, with an increase of 74% in annealed films. The band gap of PbS was found in the range of 2.12–2.78 eV for as-deposited and annealed films. Hall measurement confirmed the carriers are p-type in nature. Carrier concentration, mobility of the carriers, conductivity, and sheet resistance are directly determined by Hall-effect measurement. The as-deposited sample showed a conductivity of 5.45 × 10−4 S/m, which gradually reduced to 1.21 × 10−5 S/m due to the composite nature of films (lead sulfide along with lead oxide). Furthermore, the present work also reflects the control of properties by controlling the amount of PbO present in the PbS films which are suitable for various applications (such as IR sensors).

The toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) depends on their physicochemical properties. The ongoing research aims to develop effective methods for modifying AgNPs using molecules that enable control over the processes induced by nanoparticles in both normal and cancerous cells. Application of amino acid-stabilized nanoparticles appears promising, exhibiting tunable electrokinetic properties. Therefore, this study focused on determining the influence of the surface charge of cysteine (CYS)-stabilized AgNPs on their toxicity towards human normal B (COLO-720L) and T (HUT-78) lymphocyte cell lines. CYS-AgNPs were synthesized via the chemical reduction. Transmission electron microcopy (TEM) imaging revealed that they exhibited a quasi-spherical shape with an average size of 18 ± 3 nm. CYS-AgNPs remained stable under mild acidic (pH 4.0) and alkaline (7.4 and 9.0) conditions, with an isoelectric point observed at pH 5.1. Following a 24 h treatment of lymphocytes with CYS-AgNPs, concentration-dependent alterations in cell morphology were observed. Positively charged CYS-AgNPs notably decreased lymphocyte viability. Furthermore, they exhibited grater genotoxicity and more pronounced disruption of biological membranes compared to negatively charged CYZ-AgNPs. Despite both types of AgNPs interacting similarly with fetal bovine serum (FBS) and showing comparable profiles of silver ion release, the biological assays consistently revealed that the positively charged CYS-AgNPs exerted stronger effects at all investigated cellular levels. Although both types of CYS-AgNPs have the same chemical structure in their stabilizing layers, the pH-induced alterations in their surface charge significantly affect their biological activity.

In the presented research, we investigated Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO), with the addition of variously modified zeolite Y as an attractive explosive. Analysis of both blasting tests and thermodynamic models of blasting properties led to the conclusion that the addition of zeolite Y enhanced the detonation properties of such prepared ANFO via the growth of the detonation pressure, temperature, compression energy, and heat of the explosion. Generally, the modification of ANFO with variously prepared zeolite Y also reduced the volume of (COx + NOx) post-blast fumes. Furthermore, it was found that the ANFO’s velocity of detonation (VOD) could be controlled by the choice of the way of zeolite Y modification. Namely, for zeolite Y without Mg, as well as Mg-Y prepared via the impregnation method, the VOD rose. The opposite effect was observed when ANFO was modified with Mg-Y, obtained from the deposition of Mg over zeolite Y via the ultrasonic-assisted procedure.
