Climate change has been affecting agricultural water resources dynamics spatially and temporally. This article presents analysis results of climate change impact on agricultural water availability in Cimanuk Watershed, Indonesia. STREAM was utilized to model agricultural water availability through FAO MOSAICC web application. Climate spatial data time-series were generated using 3 Global Climate Model (GCM), i.e.,: CanESM2, CNRM-CM5, and MPI-ESM-MR following two climate change scenarios of RCP4.5 and 8.5. Model inputs were split into three periods of 1981–2010 (historical), 2010–2039 (near-future), and 2040–2069 (far-future). Historical data model validation showed the efficiency coefficient of the observed and simulated discharge data ratio was 0.68. The results showed a decreasing volumetric water availability from all generated climate data and scenarios, identified by comparing the discharge normal distribution of the historical and future data periods. Whereas, trend analysis of RCP4.5 scenario showed increasing maximum discharge of Cimanuk river using CanESM2 and MPI-ESM-MR GCM’s data, with a Mann–Kendall coefficient of 3.23 and 3.57. These results indicate a different agricultural water balance status within the watershed area, particularly a “very critical” water balance in Indramayu and Majalengka, “critical” in Garut, and “close to critical” in Sumedang Regency.

Sorghum is uniquely adapted to dryland and used by the Indonesian government to optimize the utilization of dryland and increase farmers’ incomes. The objective of this study was to analyze the contribution of sorghum to increasing income and the level of welfare of dryland farmer households in Wonogiri, Central Java, Indonesia. The study was conducted from October to December 2022 using a survey method through direct interviews with purposively selected sorghum-growing farmers. A set of questions included household income and expenditure. The average total income and expenditure indicators, poverty line figures, RMW, and ERFHI were used to measure the welfare level of farmer households. The study found that the income derived from sorghum contributes 22.87% to total household income and tends to increase household income by 29.65%. According to the average total income earned, farming households were in a prosperous condition. This can be seen from the total income, which is higher than the total expenditure, the average per capita income higher than the poverty line, the average total income higher than RMW, and the value of ERFHI at 1.25. Income derived from sorghum has increased by 21.43–56.00% from less prosperous households to prosperous ones. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on sorghum development and farmers’ income and to be a reference for policy makers in formulating poverty alleviation programs and improving the welfare of farmer households, as well as expanding sorghum development by optimizing the utilization of agroecological, economic and social resources.

A collective action approach to rice seed production is an inclusive method involving the community’s active participation at all stages of its execution. This all-inclusive strategy, however, has yet to be thoroughly investigated and published. This study explored how and to what degree an inclusive rice seed business of Gapoktan, based on a collective action approach, might be deployed in a sustainable rice seed company run by community groups. The research comprised the following stages: (1) establishment of a seed production business institution, (2) production of rice seeds, and (3) self-assessment of the performance of the seed production business institution. Institutional data were acquired through a questionnaire that references the European Foundation for Quality Management’s (EFQM) methodology. Three dimensions used were direction (purpose, vision, and strategy; organizational culture and leadership); execution (engaging stakeholders; coasting sustainable value; driving performance transformation); and result (stakeholder perceptions; strategic and operational performance). The study suggests essential findings: The organizational structure of rice seed producers formed is complete regarding its operational functions. The rice seeds produced by Gapoktan have met both the volume and quality standards. From a financial perspective, this rice seed production unit is feasible for further development. However, their social orientation is still relatively high and needs to be more profit-oriented. Uniquely, not all members buy and use Gapoktan seeds. As a result, additional efforts are necessary to provide exceptional service to Gapoktan members.

Certified rice seeds can increase productivity, but only 53% of farmers use them in Indonesia. Rainfed paddy fields with certified seeds have the potential to increase productivity and develop into production centers. The research aimed to describe farmers’ knowledge of certified rice seeds, analyze their suitability in terms of performance and importance, and analyze farmers’ satisfaction with certified rice seeds. The research was carried out in 2021 in Banjarejo Village, Bayan District, Purworejo Regency, Central Java Province. Sampling was carried out by a purposive random sample of 31 farmers. The sampling techniques were carried out using purposive random sampling. The Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) and Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. The results showed that most farmers use certified rice seeds after 3-4 planting seasons. Internal factors and economic factors affect the use of certified rice seeds. Farmers’ CSI value of seed attributes amounted to 71.05%. The use of certified rice seeds in rainfed paddy fields must be increased using a persuasive seed-independent village area approach.

Farmers’ perceptions of improved rice varieties represent a critical initial step in their adoption as climate change adaptation strategies. This study examined farmers’ perceptions by integrating on-farm adaptive research, which compared the agronomic performance of rice varieties, with participatory approaches to capture farmers’ evaluation of improved varieties. A total of 81 farmers from climate-affected areas of Batang Regency were purposively selected as respondents. Data was collected through structured interviews and questionnaires administered during the evaluation of field demonstrations. Farmers’ perception levels were assessed using a Guttman scale and classified into three categories: high, medium, and low. Logistic regression analysis was subsequently employed to examine the relationship between farmers’ socio-demographic characteristics and their acceptance of improved rice varieties. The results indicate that, overall, farmers exhibited a low perception of improved rice varieties. Among the evaluated opinions, Inpari 32 HDB received the highest perception scores across all agronomic attributes. The regression results show that farm size and age significantly influence variety acceptance. The odds ratio for farm size (0.117) suggests that each additional hectare of cultivated land area reduces the likelihood of adopting improved rice varieties by approximately 88.3%, holding other factors constant. In contrast, the odds ratio for age (1.080) indicates that each additional year of age increases the probability of adoption by about 8%.
