This study determined the influence of precipitation occurring in the sewerage catchment basin in Nowy Targ (Poland) on the amount of wastewater inflow to the wastewater treatment plant, and determined the costs resulting from the treatment of accidental (rain) water entering the analyzed sewerage system. The research was conducted from 2016 to 2019, for which daily precipitation and average daily wastewater inflows in the so-called dry, normal, and very wet periods were analyzed. The research period was divided into six characteristic intervals in terms of precipitation. It was found that, on days with different precipitation intensity, the amount of accidental water as a proportion of the total amount of wastewater flowing into the plant ranges from 9.6% to 34.1%. The annual costs incurred by the operator resulting from the environmental fee are 1625.8 EUR/year. Alternatively, the costs resulting from financial expenditures for wastewater treatment processes amount to 337,651 EUR/year. The results of the research provide important information for sewage network operators to take effective actions to eliminate illegal connections of roof gutters and/or yard inlets to the sanitary collectors, and to replace the combined sewage system in Nowy Targ with a distributed sewerage system. This would reduce the costs of wastewater treatment and the irregularity of wastewater inflow.

The purpose of this work was to determine the optimal percentage of wastewater from cesspool in the mixture of wastes subjected to treatment processes, which will not have a negative impact on the functioning of the collective treatment plant. The study was carried out over a period of two years, with 48 samples of wastewater flowing in from the sewage network and delivered with the slurry tanker collected and subjected to physical and chemical analysis. The analysis included: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Total Nitrogen (TN). In addition, the study defined the daily balance of the amount of inflowing and transported wastewater. Based on the analysis carried out, it was found that the unit loads of BOD5, COD and TN in the mixture of wastewater subjected to the treatment process will be at the level of loads assumed in the project, when the share of supplied wastewater, i.e., from cesspool, will be at the level of 5% of the total amount of wastewater. Considering that in the analysed period the total average daily amount of wastewater subjected to the treatment process was 253.5 m3·d−1, the optimal amount of wastewater delivered should be 12.7 m3 in each day of the week.

The aim of this study was to determine the condition of activated sludge in the biologic reactor located in the collective wastewater treatment plant in Nowy Targ (Poland) based on OUR tests in the aspect of the impact of sludge’s concentration in the biologic reactor and dependence of BOD5/TN and BOD5/TP in wastewater flowing into the biologic reactor. The analysis was conducted based on test results from 61 samples of activated sludge taken from the biologic reactor and 61 samples of wastewater flowing into the biologic reactor. The analysis included the concentration of sludge in the biologic reactor. The following indicators were analyzed in wastewater flowing into the reactor: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). The statistical analysis concerning the impact of the analyzed factors on oxygen uptake rate (OUR) tests was developed based on the Pearson’s correlation coefficient and partial correlation of many variables. Based on the results of the partial correlation analysis, nomograms were developed to determine the condition of activated sludge microorganisms (OUR) based on the BOD5/TN and BOD5/TP connection and knowledge of the sludge concentration in the bioreactor of the treatment plant. The presented nomograms can be formulated for each bioreactor based on activated sludge technology related the load of organic and biogenic pollutants in the wastewater flowing into the bioreactor and the concentration of the sludge in the bioreactor.

The study determines the impact of precipitation on the amount of wastewater flowing into the treatment plant in Nowy Targ. The research period covered the years 2016 and 2017, in which the amount of precipitation and average daily wastewater inflows (during the so-called dry period, i.e. days without precipitation and in the so-called wet period, i.e. days with precipitation) were analyzed. The research period was divided into 5 characteristic ranges in terms of the amount of precipitation. It was found that on days with different intensity of precipitation, the amount of rainwater (in the total amount of wastewater flowing into the treatment plant) ranges from 14.2% to 32.5%. Taking into account the absolute values, it was found that the average daily amount of wastewater inflow on days with precipitation was from 14361 to 18248 m3∙d-1 compared to wastewater inflow on days without precipitation (12323 m3∙d-1). The obtained test results should be a signal for sewage network operators for the performance of intensive and effective actions aimed at eliminating illegal connections of drain pipe for rainwater and yard drains to sanitary collectors and the replacement combined sewer system to distribution sewer system in the city of Nowy Targ.

The hydraulic loading of biofilter (HL), temperature and C/N ratio - these factors influence on nitrogen and carbon removal efficiency from airport wastewater containing de-icing agents. The vast area of airports and significant fluctuations in atmospheric precipitation contribute to huge differences in wastewater flows discharged to treatment systems. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the hydraulic loading on nitrogen and organic compounds removal in biofilters in low temperatures. The novelty of the paper results from low temperatures (0, 4 and 8 °C), specific wastewater and biofilter filling (light weight aggregates prepared from fly ashes from sewage sludge thermal treatment (FASST LWA). The study was divided into four series differing in the hydraulic loading (1.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 10.0 L·m−2·d−1). In each series, biofilters (filled with FASST LWA) were operated at the temperature of 0, 4, 8 °C and 25 °C. The organic carbon to nitrogen ratio was 0.5. The study showed the effective removal of nitrogen at low temperatures, even at high HL. The highest efficiency of nitrogen removal at the temperature of 0 °C (34.93 ± 4.54%) was obtained at 5.0 L·m−2·d−1. The hydraulic loading and temperature affected the efficiency of nitrogen and COD removal. The presented experiment demonstrated that the use of biofilters filled with FASST LWA may offer an effective and sustainable method for the treatment of airport de-icing wastewater.

This paper reports a comparative study on kinetics of organic matter expressed as BOD5 and nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands operated in Poland. Analyzed data were collected at eight wetland systems, composed of subsurface flow beds: horizontal flow (HF) and vertical flow (VF), in different number and sequences. The analysis involved particularly mass removal rates (MRR) and first-order removal rate coefficients of BOD5 and total nitrogen (kA and kv for VF and HF filters, respectively, and k20 as a parameter averaged for a temperature of 20 °C). It was found that the higher the load of pollutants applied to the beds, the higher MRR values were obtained. The average k-rates in analyzed systems were mostly lower than those reported in the literature, especially in the case of total nitrogen. Its removal obtained in horizontal flow beds was kv = 0.002–0.042 d−1, while in vertical flow systems kA varied from 0.007 m d−1 to 0.0037 m d−1. According to data given by previous studies, first-order reaction rates for nitrogen removal varied in range from kv = 0.048 d−1 to kv = 0.19 d−1 and kA from 0.007 to 0.1 m d−1 in HF and VF beds, respectively. Regarding BOD5 shown in literature, removal rate kv for HF beds varied from 0.071 to 6.11 d−1, and kA for VF beds varied from 0.019 to 1.0 m d−1, while in this study lower k-rates were obtained: kv = 0.005–0.085 d−1 and kA = 0.015–0.130 m d−1. Relatively long monitoring period, for some of constructed wetland up to 16 years, resulted in good data set and enables creation of the graphs, which could be helpful in evaluation and designing of constructed wetlands for PE bigger than 50, in moderate climate conditions.

The aim was to assess the stability of the chemical composition of the groundwater in terms of maintaining the status of therapeutic waters in accordance with the Geological and Mining Law in Poland. The basis for the analysis was the results of stationary observations for nine hydrogeological wells for the needs of the Mineral Water Bottling Plant “Piwniczanka”. The database used for the analysis covered the years 2008–2018 and concerned the content of selected ions as well as total dissolved solids and CO2 content. For each of the analyzed boreholes, the analysis of the variability of the content was performed using graphical Schoeller–Berkaloff plots and statistical investigations (GWSDAT and STATISTICA). This hydrogeochemical investigation has demonstrated that groundwater in the Piwniczna area occur as natural “carbonated waters” and “waters containing carbon dioxide”. Summing up the analysis, it can be stated that the content of basic ions of the exploited water show a small variability and does not threaten the loss of therapeutic water status for seven of the boreholes. Two of them have a little risk of loss of therapeutic water status. Variable content of sodium ions causes changes in the hydrogeochemical type of water without affecting the maintenance of the status.

The aim of this work was to determine the technological reliability of pollutions removal in different seasons in one-stage constructed wetland system with horizontal flow operating in the conditions of moderate climate. In the above-mentioned system, willow (Salix Viminalis L.) was planted and the average flow of domestic sewage were 1.2 m3/d. The analyzed system is located in south-eastern Poland, where the climate is moderate transitional. The tests were carried out during the 14-year exploitation of the wastewater treatment plant (1997–2010). During this period, sewage samples were collected in 4 seasons (winter – February, spring – may, summer – August and autumn – November) to be analyzed. The average long-term air temperatures in these months were respectively: −1.8; 13.8; 18.3 and 3.5 °C. Altogether 56 series of analyzes were carried out during the research and 112 samples of the sewage, both from the inflow and the outflow of the wastewater treatment plant, were collected. The measured parameters were: BOD5, COD, total nitrogen, total phosphorus. On the grounds of the reliability analysis performed on the basis of the Weibull probability model, it was found that the reliability of pollutions removal in the tested constructed wetland system are higher in summer and autumn (August, November) than in winter and in spring (February, May). It was shown that exceedance of the admissible values of pollutant indicators in treated wastewater is dependent on the season (air temperature) and it occurred mainly in the winter period (February). It was proved that the tested CW does not provide effective elimination of biogenic indicators (nitrogen and phosphorus), as evidenced by small values of reliability. To increase the technological reliability of the tested treatment plant, it is proposed to expand the existing system and create a hybrid system consisting of two beds with vertical and horizontal flow and a special P-filter.

The purpose of the work was to determine the reliability of the selected pollution indicators removal i.e. CODCr, ammonium nitrogen, total phosphorus and total suspension from the SBR- type collective sewage treatment plant. The level of operational reliability of sewage treatment plants was determined by means of quality control using control charts. Physical and chemical analyzes of raw and treated wastewater, were carried out in the period from 2008 to 2016. As a result of the control charts analysis, it was found that in the sewage treatment plant there was full stability of the process of total suspended solids reducing. In the case of CODCr, total phosphorus and ammonium nitrogen, there were noticed occasional samples groupings below the lower characteristic line, which could indicate a disturbance of process stability. However, they did not affect the efficiency of wastewater treatment in the tested treatment plant. Therefore, it is possible to confirm the thesis that the method of determining the reliability of the treatment plant operation by using control charts is an easy and effective tool for the operator to detect any disturbances and irregularities in the process occurring in the tested object and enables to take appropriate action to remove them.

In the study, the Weibull reliability theory was used to analyze the reliability of a small Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (SBBR) for domestic wastewater purification. Also, the relative frequency and probability of exceedance of effluent discharge limits for the analyzed pollution parameters (BOD5, COD, total suspended solids, total nitrogen and total phosphorus) were determined. Full technical scale tests were carried out at a facility with a mean throughput of 0.6 m3/d, for a period of 34 months from December 2016 to September 2018. An analysis of the test results regarding the reliability of removal of the contaminants to the maximum effluent discharge levels yielded the following figures: BOD5 – 77.5%, COD – 97.8%, TSS – 100%, TN – 12.2% and TP – 21.7%. The relative exceedance frequencies measured in treated wastewater, expressed as proportion of all measurement series for a given parameter were: BOD5 – 17.14%, COD – 3.7%, TSS – 0%, TN – 85.2% and TP – 81.2%. The study showed that the small SBBR system was reliable in removing the basic contaminants (TSS, BOD5, COD) from domestic wastewater, but did not ensure effective removal of biogenic compounds. Large-scale use of this type of treatment plants may contribute to the eutrophication of wastewater receivers.

The aim of the present work was the modeling of the wastewater treatment plant operation work using Monte Carlo method and different random variables probability distributions modeling. The analysis includes the following pollutants indicators; BOD5 (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), CODCr (Chemical Oxygen Demand), Total Suspended Solids (SSt), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP). The Anderson–Darling (A–D) test was used for the assessment of theoretical and empirical distributions compatibility. The selection of the best-fitting statistical distributions was performed using peak-weighted root mean square (PWRMSE) parameter. Based on the performed calculations, it was stated that pollutants indicators in treated sewage were characterized by a significant variability. Obtained results indicate that the best-fitting pollutants indicators statistical distribution is Gauss Mixed Model (GMM) function. The results of the Monte Carlo simulation method confirmed that some problems related to the organic and biogenic pollutants reduction may be observed in the Wastewater Treatment Plant, in Jaworzno.

Based on the conducted analysis, it was found that objects act as underloaded hydraulically and the actual inflow of sewage to the analysed objects during the research period ranged from 7.3% to 32.7% in relation to the inflow assumed in the project. Furthermore, in the case of loading the treatment plant with the load of pollutants expressed as PE, it was fund that the actual PE values were lower than assumed in the project. Therefore, it is important that the sizes of the series of household sewage treatment plants were selected depending on the individual conditions of household, i.e. the number of inhabitants or the amount of consumed water.

The aim of study was the analyze of the impact of hydraulic load on the changes in the concentration of pollution indicators in raw sewage in years 2009-2014 in the small wastewater treatment plant. Qualitative analysis for raw sewage was included three parameters: total suspension solid, BOD and COD. The characteristics relation between the concentration of pollution indicators in raw sewage (depend variable) from the hydraulic load(independent variable) was presented by the Pearson linear correlation. In the 6 year study period were collected 32 samples of raw wastewater. Based on the result of linear regression analysis, showed that along with the increasing amount of wastewater in the sewer decrease the concentration of pollutions in raw wastewater. For total suspension solid, increase by 1 m3 of quantity of raw sewage inflowing to wastewater treatment plant, causes a decrease in the concentration of this indicator by 0,53 g·m-3. For the both organic indicators (BOD and COD), the was found that an increase of 1 m3 the amount of raw sewage inflowing to wastewater treatment plant, caused a decrease of 0,75 gO2·m-3 BOD value and 0,66 gO2·m-3 COD value in raw sewage.

This study presents the results of the analysis concerning the influence of the amount of inflowing wastewater on concentrations of organic and biogenic pollutants, as well as chromium ions in wastewater flowing into the collective sewage treatment plant in Nowy Targ. The research was carried out in 2016 and 2017, where in the period of 24 months a total number of 87 wastewater samples were collected in order to determine the concentration of the analyzed pollution indicators. During this period, the average daily inflow of wastewater to the sewage treatment plant was also analyzed. Based on the analysis of linear correlation, it was stated that there is a high dependence of concentrations of organic and biogenic pollutants on the amount of inflowing raw wastewater. Furthermore, it was found that there is an average dependence of chromium ion concentrations in raw wastewater on the amount of inflowing wastewater. In order to minimize the high variability of the concentration of pollutants in raw wastewater, it is recommended to reconstruct the sewerage system from the combined sewer system to the distribution system. Additionally, it is recommended to monitor the sewerage network in order to eliminate illegal inflows of rainwater and industrial wastewater from furrier’s production facility.
