One of the most important effluents in Guadiana Valley, Durango is El Tunal River, mostly used for agricultural and livestock supply. This river has been polluted by agricultural activity and wastewater discharges. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the current quality of water and agricultural soil near the river, to estimate the environmental situation of the agricultural sector and its main pollution sources. Hence, a total of 24 soil and five water samples were taken, analysing parameters of organic matter, pH, nutrients, and heavy metals(loid)s (As, Cd, Pb, Zn) in five agricultural areas. The randomised experimental design showed significant variations in soil ( p < 0.05) of organic matter, nitrogen, As, and Pb between sampling points, confirming suitable conditions for agriculture. Although contamination by heavy metal(loid)s exists, it is below permitted levels. In contrast, the physicochemical quality of the water indicated high levels of phosphates, total dissolved solids, and total coliforms, mainly in the nearest site of a wastewater treatment plant, thus the quality of the water is not suitable for consumption and irrigation for sensitive crops. Nevertheless, rainfall contributes to improve the quality of the river by diluting pollutants. Moreover, constant use of this water might represent a risk to human health and agriculture as it could transport elements to crops or soil, becoming a severe environmental problem.

Climate change and soil degradation represent a threat to essential crops such as maize. In Mexico, this grain is of strategic importance, yet yields are often low. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can help mitigate this problem. The potential of Paenibacillus dendritiformis, isolated from the “El Chichonal” volcano (Chiapas, Mexico), was evaluated as a PGPB under laboratory conditions using infertile soil. Its capacity for nitrogen fixation (NF), phosphate solubilization (PS), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, biocontrol activity, and tolerance to different pH levels, temperature, and salinity were assessed. The effect of inoculation on maize seed germination and vigor was examined in vitro through morphological variables and dry weight. Completely randomized and randomized block designs were used, along with Duncan’s test (p < 0.05) for mean comparison. Cohen’s d was used to estimate the size of the treatment effect. P. dendritiformis demonstrated NF, PS, and IAA production, a wide range of environmental tolerance, and promoted root length and number of root hairs in maize at seven days, as well as increased leaf length and area and foliar and root dry weight at 14 days. It is concluded that P. dendritiformis has potential as a PGPB for infertile soils, based on laboratory evaluations.

Biofertilizers obtained from the anaerobic digestion of manure can emerge as an ecological alternative in crop production. This study aimed to evaluate the yield and nutritional characteristics of oats (Avena sativa L.) fertilized with different doses of biofertilizer (Biol) through foliar application. In southern Durango, Mexico, four doses of Biol were applied: 0, 220, 440, 660 and 880 L.ha-1, corresponding to treatments T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5, respectively, using a completely randomized block design. The crude protein (CP) content was similar among treatments (p>0.05); Meanwhile, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and phosphorus (P) decreased with the maximum doses of Biol (p<0.05). Regarding in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) differences were found (p<0.05). Fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) yields increased with the higher doses of Biol, achieving higher values of 25.50 and 7.05 t.ha-1, respectively. Additionally, the application of the biofertilizer Biol increased oat yield and improved some nutritional values of the forage. These results suggest that Biol is a viable alternative to the use of chemical fertilizers, promoting sustainable agriculture and contributing to the mitigation of the negative environmental impact generated by chemical fertilizers.
