Fluorescent probes have attracted special attention in developing optical sensor systems due to their reliable and rapid fluorescent response upon reaction with the analyte. Comparing to traditional fluorescent sensing systems that employ the intensity of only a single emission, ratiometric fluorescent sensors exhibit higher sensitivity and allow fast visual screening of analytes because of quantitatively analyzing analytes through the emission intensity ratio at two or more wavelengths. Lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (LnMOFs) are highly designable multifunctional luminescent materials as lanthanide ions, organic ligands, and guest metal ions or chromophores are all potential sources for luminescence. They thus have been widely employed as ratiometric fluorescent sensors. This mini review summarized the basic concept, optical features, construction strategies, and the ratiometric fluorescent sensing mechanisms of dual-emitting LnMOFs. The review ends with a discussion on the prospects, challenges, and new direction in designing LnMOF-based ratiometric fluorescent sensors.

Smart mobile handheld devices (MHDs) such as smartphones have been used for a wide range of applications. Despite the recent flurry of research on various aspects of smart MHDs, little is known about their network performance in WiFi networks. In this paper, we measure the network performance of smart MHDs inside a university campus WiFi network, and identify the dominant factors that affect the network performance. Specifically, we analyze 2.9TB of data collected over three days by a monitor that is located at a gateway router of the network, and make the following findings: (1) Compared to non-handheld devices (NHDs), MHDs use well provisioned Akamai and Google servers more heavily, which boosts the overall network performance of MHDs. Furthermore, MHD flows, particularly short flows, benefit from the large initial congestion window that has been adopted by Akamai and Google servers. (2) MHDs tend to have larger local delays inside the WiFi network and are more adversely affected by the number of concurrent flows. (3) Earlier versions of Android OS (before 4.X) cannot take advantage of the large initial congestion window adopted by many servers. On the other hand, the large receive window adopted by iOS is not fully utilized by most flows, potentially leading to waste of resources. (4) Some application-level protocols cause inefficient use of network and operating system resources of MHDs in WiFi networks. Our observations provide valuable insights on content distribution, server provisioning, MHD system design, and application-level protocol design.

Photon frequency conversion using optical materials is a common strategy for light generation and utilization. Materials capable of visible‐to‐ultraviolet (UV) light conversion have attracted particular attention due to their potential applications in nonlinear optics, biophotonics, as well as environmental sciences. There are four main mechanisms of visible‐to‐UV light conversion processes, including second‐harmonic generation, two‐photon absorption, lanthanide‐based upconversion, and triplet–triplet annihilation. Herein, recent developments in visible‐to‐UV light conversion materials are collectively reviewed and the emerging applications are presented. The prospects and challenges for further development in this field are also highlighted.

The development of multi-wavelength lasing, particularly with the wavelength tuning in a wide spectral range, is challenging but highly desirable for integrated photonic devices due to its dynamic switching functionality, high spectral purity and contrast. Here, we propose a general strategy, that relies on the simultaneous design on the electronic states and the optical states, to demonstrate dynamically switchable single-mode lasing spanning beyond the record range (300 nm). This is achieved through integrating the reversely designed nanocrystals with two size-mismatched coupled microcavities. We show an experimental validation of a crosstalk-free violet-to-red single-mode behavior through collective control of asymmetric excitation and excitation wavelength. The single-mode action persists for a wide power range, and presents significant enhancement when compared with that in the microdisk laser. These findings enlighten the reverse design of luminescent materials. Given the remarkable doping flexibility, our results may create new opportunities in a variety of frontier applications.

The composite TiO2/Mo-TiO2 were prepared by a modified sol-gel method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET analysis, SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV–vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy techniques. The structural characterization results demonstrated that Mo was successfully doped into the TiO2 lattice and caused slight changes in the physiochemical properties. The UV–vis DRS showed a red shift of the adsorption edge to the visible region. The photocatalytic decomposition efficiencies of the catalysts were examined with toluene as a typical VOC in a continuous flow reactor. The photocatalytic activity of the n-n heterogeneous TiO2/Mo-TiO2 was greater than that of pure TiO2 and Mo-TiO2, and the catalyst containing a Mo/Ti mole ratio of 2.5% exhibited optimum photocatalytic properties. In general, a relative humidity of 35%, a higher oxygen content, a lower initial toluene concentration, and a higher UV intensity were beneficial for toluene decomposition.
