This paper describes a high performance neutral point voltage balancing technique for a Neutral point clamped (NPC) Converter. Conventional neutral point voltage balancing methods do not function well under low power factor, low pulse ratio and near-unity modulation index operation conditions. These conditions are essentially dominant operation conditions for aircraft starter/generator systems. This paper introduces an alternative space vector modulation technique for three-level NPC converters in an aircraft starter generator system. The selection of voltage space vectors is optimized for high modulation index and low power factor operation. Disturbances caused by low pulse ratio is also compensated. The proposed method maintains neutral point voltage balance and ripple minimization over the full range of operating conditions. The paper also provides a detailed analysis into the sources of neutral point voltage imbalances and ripples in high speed drives with deep flux weakening. Simulation results obtained from a Simulink/PLECS model and experimental results obtained from a 45kVA, 32krpm aircraft starter generator test rig proves the proposed method eliminates the neutral point voltage imbalance and significantly reduces the neutral point voltage ripple.

The more-electric aircraft concept has made extraction of electrical power from both high-pressure and low-pressure shaft of an aircraft engine essential for future aircraft. With each shaft driving one electrical generation channel, an advanced dual-channel enhanced power generation system can be formed. This paper aims to address the power quality issues of this dual-channel power generation system, specifically focuses on reduction of harmonics on a dc bus. A simplified model to estimate second carrier harmonic of dc current in two-level converters is developed. The developed model reveals the fact that while this second carrier harmonic component magnitude can be determined by modulation index and dc-link current, its phase angle is solely dependent on the angle of carrier signals. Using developed model and these key findings, a new harmonic cancellation method is proposed through active power sharing and phase angle shifting of the carrier signals within different power sources. The method has demonstrated high robustness and is effective under different fundamental frequencies and power sharing ratio. Both simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper to validate the proposed harmonic model and the enhanced cancellation method.

In this paper, an intelligent control strategy for DC/DC converters is proposed. The converter connects two DC busses, a high-voltage and a low-voltage bus. The control scheme is composed by a two-layer architecture, a low-level control based on the concept of sliding manifold, and high gain control, and a high-level control used to guarantee the achievement of various objectives. The proposed control strategies are based on solid mathematical arguments, with stability proofs for the non-linear case, and decision trees for parameter selection. The paper results are analyzed and discussed by using simulation at different detail levels in MATLAB/Stateflow/PowerSystem, and validated by experimental results, also considering MIL standard performance indices.

Multi-source DC power systems have been widely used in electric transportations, including more-electric aircraft, electric ship and electric vehicles. These systems normally involve in power electronic converters whose switching actions may cause current fluctuation on DC-bus capacitors. Eliminating certain order harmonics can help the system potentially reduce the volume and weight of the capacitor. In this paper, a simplified model to estimate 2nd carrier harmonic of de current in two-level converters is proposed. In derived model, magnitude of the harmonic is only determined by the DC-bus current and modulation index of the converter. Meanwhile, the phase angle of it is determined by angle of carrier signals. Based on this model, a new harmonic cancellation method is proposed. The method has high robustness and can work under any fundamental frequency and power sharing ratio. Simulation results are presented in this paper to verify the validation of proposed harmonic model and the enhanced cancellation method.
