This paper builds a research model with four constructs, i.e., competencies, knowledge-oriented leadership, innovation, and performance within manufacturing companies to find out, through path modeling, 1) the effect of competencies on innovation, 2) the effect of knowledge-oriented leadership on innovation, and 3) the effect of innovation on performance. The survey instrument included four constructs – Competencies (COMP), Knowledge-oriented Leadership (LEAD), Innovation (INNO), and Performance (PERF). A marketing research company administered the instrument via computer-assisted telephone interviewing to subjects (N = 377) from 10 different high-tech manufacturing companies in Poland. Collected data were analyzed through partial least square structural equation modeling. The findings revealed that competencies and knowledge-oriented leadership positively and significantly influence innovation and innovation positively and significantly influence performance. Moreover, innovation was found to be a mediating variable between competencies and performance and knowledge-oriented leadership and performance. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed, followed by addressing the study’s limitations and future research directions.

The main purpose of this article is to analyze the dissemination of social reports among entrepreneurs in order to determine the number of reporting organizations and examples in which Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) areas enterprises report. We analyze the dissemination of social reports among entrepreneurs in Poland and determine the number of reporting organizations and examples in which CSR companies report. This work is a guide for entrepreneurs in Poland to build strategies and activities for transparency and communicating good practice. One of the research goals was to identify and evaluate communication activities with stakeholders in terms of responsible activities, social and environmental. The data analysis comes from a detailed literature review and the Responsible Business Forum (FOB) Reports database for 2008–2019 in Poland. The results of the survey show that many entrepreneurs in Poland, representing small, medium-sized (SME), and even large enterprises underestimate the importance of socially responsible activities. Entrepreneurs communicate with stakeholders to a limited extent and are not informed about good practices. The vast majority of the surveyed enterprises, especially large ones, prepare social reports, which result from obligation: requirements of Directive 2014/95/EU. The SME sector shows a lack of knowledge and uses individual marketing communication tools to a limited extent, limiting itself to advertising activities (very few companies prepare social reports). The article is a practical tip for enterprises showing the impact of business on changes towards sustainable development. Originality/value lies in the fact that the article presents selected research results on various aspects related to social reporting and communicating social and environmental activities to stakeholders.

The main purpose of this study is to explore the influences of factors on using SNSs that arise from the basic need of belonging to emotional disclosure then the intention to make connections to others. The participants of this study were 540 university students from Turkey and Poland. The results showed that the need to belong is a significant predictor of usage intensity of SNSs, the consecutive influences of emotion disclosure and make connection intention significantly mediate this relationship, and some of these direct and indirect relationships are varying in the different collectivism conditions. All these findings were discussed according to the related theories and the findings in the literature with suggestions for future studies.

This paper aims to identify financial measures that are related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) involvement activities. The study concerns the food industry, in which clients, as well as stakeholders, increasingly appreciate socially responsible companies, which could be a crucial factor for future growth strategy. An analysis was made on a sample of 448 food companies from 50 countries in 2009–2020. As a financial measure for CSR assessment, we used profitability ratios, dividend payout ratio, price-to-earnings ratio and market capitalization. The results confirmed that CSR reporting was a crucial division that differentiated companies from the perspective of profitability, OE, market capitalization, and share price. The CSR practices that are realized and published in reports become an important signal for investors that the company has a good financial situation and is able to invest in CSR without reducing its performance.

This paper aims to identify the most important social media purposes of usage by responding women’s attitudes according to age and the economic stage of development of their respective country. Research was done through an online survey in 2017–2018 followed by an analyses of the results from eight countries: four countries that represent an emerging economy and four developed economies. Participants responded to questions concerning social technologies and their purposes of usage as well as resulting job opportunities. The conducted analysis of regarding Facebook as a platform resulted in the highest number of responses in the survey. In this paper, detailed results are presented including a comparative analysis between two groups of economies. Findings reveal that in both groups, the usage of Facebook in business is related mostly to a positive experience. The result showed that among women in emerging economies, social media were used more broadly, and from an age perspective, the results show that marketing is a key benefit emphasized among older respondents. The communication benefit of Facebook usage in business was noticed as a key factor by respondents in groups from both developed and emerging economies.

The purpose of this study was to explore and compare women’s perceptions of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), empowerment, and success among respondents in eight countries. The research sample consisted of 969 participants (137 from Georgia, 105 from Poland, 130 from Romania, 152 from Slovenia, 102 from Spain, 123 from Taiwan, 120 from Turkey, and 100 from the United States). Qualitative data analysis was used for exploring participants’ perspectives among different cultures. The results showed that there were numerous differences among the respondents regarding their perceptions of Information and Communication Technologies, empowerment, and success. Positive experiences of ICTs were primarily related to simplifying communication and enabling easy access to information and methods for sharing it, while negative experiences were typically associated with privacy issues. The success of using ICTs was similarly related to the ability to increase awareness and simplify communication, both of which are necessary for women to reach specified goals and achieve success in the workplace.

The purpose of this paper was to first examine the reliability, validity, and strength of a unified model for information security policy compliance that includes eight constructs explaining information security policy compliance. Second, seven hypotheses were developed and tested based on the constructs in the model. An instrument with eight constructs was used to reflect the traditional survey statements method that measures current or retrospective behavior for the items of each construct. A sample of 187 faculty and staff from a mid-sized university in the USA participated in the study. Data were collected electronically and analyzed through SmartPLS 3.0, a partial least square structural equation modeling software. The results indicated strong support for the models’ reliability, validity, and strength. The results also showed support for five hypotheses. Two hypotheses were rejected. The findings with implications are discussed. Recommendations for future research are made.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to build an awareness-centered information security policy (ISP) compliance model, asserting that awareness is the key to ISP compliance and that awareness depends upon several variables that influence successful ISP compliance. Design/methodology/approach The authors built a model with seven constructs, i.e., leadership, trusting beliefs, information security issues awareness (ISIA), ISP awareness, understanding resource vulnerability, self-efficacy (SE) and intention to comply. Seven hypotheses were stated. A sample of 285 non-management employees was used from various organizations in the USA. The authors used path modeling to analyze the data. Findings The findings indicated that IS awareness depends on effective organizational leadership and elevated employees’ trusting beliefs. The understanding of resource vulnerability (URV) and SE are influenced by IS awareness resulting from effective leadership and elevated employees’ trusting beliefs which guide employees to comply with ISP requirements. Practical implications Practical implications were aimed at organizations embracing an awareness-centered information security compliance program to secure organizations’ assets against threats by implementing various security education and training awareness programs. Originality/value This paper asserts that awareness is central to ISP compliance. Leadership and trusting beliefs variables play significant roles in the information security awareness which in turn positively affect employees’ URV and SE variables leading employees to comply with the ISP requirements.

Purpose In the business and data analytics community, intuition has not been discussed widely in terms of its application to executive decision-making. However, the purpose of this paper is to focus on new global research that combines intuition, trust and analytics in terms of how well C-level executives trust their intuition. Design/methodology/approach Our Fulbright research, as described in this paper and performed by colleagues from the United States, Canada, Poland and Italy, examines executives’ as well as other less experienced employees’ preferences for different types of intuition versus data analysis. This study set out to better understand the degree to which executives prefer intuition versus analysis and the relationship between these approaches to decision-making. Our research combines elements of a review, a cross-cultural/cross-company survey study and a biometrics study in interoception. The research team has a multidisciplinary background in business, information technology, strategy, trust management, statistics and neuroscience. Findings Based on our research, the main findings are as follows. The use of and preference for intuition types change as employees gain more experience. However, there may be intuition styles that are more static and trait-like, which are linked to roles, differentiating managers from leaders. Using “inferential intuition” and “seeing the big picture” go hand in hand. Listening to your body signals can promote improved intuition. Cross-cultural differences may impact executive decision-making. Executives often prefer to use their intuition over analysis/analytics. Research limitations/implications This research could be expanded to have a larger sample size of C-level executives. We had 172 responses with 65% C-level executives and 12% directors. However, a recent survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit on intuition used by executives had a sample of 174 executives around the world, which is comparable with our sample size. Practical implications From our research, executives should continue to apply their experiential learning through intuition to complement their use of data in making strategic decisions. We have often discounted the use of intuition in executive decision-making, but our research highlights the importance of making it a critical part of the executive decision-making process. Originality/value Based on the results of our survey and biometrics research, executives apply their intuition to gain greater confidence in their decision-making. Listening to their body signals can also improve their intuitive executive awareness. This complements their use of data and analytics when making executive decisions.

The Internet of Things (IoT) global arena is massive and growing exponentially. Those in the emerging digital world have recently witnessed the proliferation and impact of IoT-enabled devices. The IoT has provided new opportunities in the technology arena while bringing several challenges to an increased level of concern. This research has both practical and theoretical impetus since IoT is still in its infancy, and yet it is considered by many as the most important technology initiative of today. This study includes a systematic review and synthesis of IoT related literature and the development of a theoretical framework and conceptual model. The review of the literature reveals that the number of applications that make use of the IoT has increased dramatically and spans areas from business and manufacturing to home, health care, and knowledge management. Although IoT can create invaluable data in every industry, it does not occur without its challenges. The theoretical framework developed identifies IoT priority areas and challenges, providing a guide for those leading IoT initiatives and revealing opportunities for future IoT research.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the link between users’ risk beliefs and social media privacy concerns (concerns users express regarding social media sites’ practices as to how they collect and use personal information). A Likert-type instrument with seven constructs, six of which described the social media privacy concerns and the seventh construct defined users’ risk beliefs, was used to collect data from students who were studying at a university in the southeastern United States. All students (N = 138) used Facebook as their major social networking site. Collected data were analyzed via multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that subjects’ risk beliefs are influenced by three social media privacy concerns (i.e., collection, error, and awareness). The Findings and their implications are discussed. Recommendations for future research are made.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to build a research model that examines social media privacy concerns (SMPC) in relation to users’ trusting beliefs and risk beliefs. Design/methodology/approach An instrument with eight constructs (SMPC: collection, SMPC: secondary usage, SMPC: errors, SMPC: improper access, SMPC: control, SMPC: awareness, trusting beliefs and risk beliefs) was developed and administered to subjects from a mid-sized university in the USA. Collected data were analyzed using partial least square structural equation modeling. Findings The results showed that three of the six SMPC (i.e. secondary usage, improper access and awareness) were negatively and significantly associated with users’ trusting beliefs. In addition, three of the six SMPC (i.e. collection, errors and improper access) were positively and significantly associated with users’ risk beliefs. Practical implications Practical implications were aimed at the social media sites to design simple and straightforward privacy policy statements that are easy to understand; to safeguard users’ online privacy behaviors; and to develop mechanisms to protect personal information. Originality/value This study enhances the literature by contributing to a generalized knowledge of SMPC of users as they relate to their trusting beliefs and risk beliefs.

Sorting out and solving these crises requires fundamental trust, which is a very fragile component of organizational interactions. Trust is difficult to establish and sustain, but it can be destroyed very easily. People create expectations about others, believing that they will behave in a way that is beneficial and not harmful for the parties in an interaction. Trust is a very important part of social and organizational life, especially in situations where the trustor depends on the trustee’s future actions to achieve her or his own goals and objectives. This is of great importance in managing public organizations. The necessity of establishing conditions of creating public trust is becoming omnipresent (Denhardt 2011; Lane 2009). Thus, trust must be taken into account in the operations of any public organization.
