Background: Impacted teeth are commonly asymptomatic and not associated with any pathologic lesions for years. Any change in the size of the follicle associated with impacted teeth may result in odontogenic cysts or tumors. CBCT plays an important role in determining the radiographic features of a lesion and therefore, is very helpful for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Objective: This study aims to evaluate radiolucent lesions associated with impacted teeth in terms of age and sex distribution, localization, and comparison with the pathological diagnosis. Methods: In this retrospective study, out of 6758 CBCT images, 400 images revealing radiolucent lesions were detected. The study included only 190 cases (regarding 180 patients) which had a matching histopathological evaluation. Data related to the age and sex of the patients, localization of the lesions, and their comparison with the pathological diagnosis were recorded and analyzed. Results: The most encountered lesions were dentigerous cysts (60%) and odontogenic keratocysts CIOSS (26.3%). Males were the most affected (63.3%). Most of the lesions were found in the left and right posterior mandible and mostly (66.8 %) associated with third molars. Out of 123 radiological diagnoses of dentigerous cyst cases, histopathological diagnoses confirmed 108 cases. Regarding odontogenic keratocyst, histopathological diagnosis confirmed 40 cases out of 48. Conclusion: Radiological diagnoses of the lesions mostly match with their pathological diagnosis unless their characteristics are changed due to infection. CBCT, as a technique enabling detailed imaging of the involved dental structures, is a helpful instrument for differential diagnosis.

Background: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), which provides three-dimensional evaluations necessary for precise assessment of anatomical features, has become a crucial component of dental volumetric analysis. While the stereological Cavalieri principle offers objective volume estimates, the influence of section orientation and slice interval variations on CBCT-based computations remains understudied. Specifically, the lack of standardized protocols for slice interval selection and section orientation can introduce variability in volumetric measurements, potentially affecting the accuracy and comparability of research findings and clinical diagnoses. This study addresses this gap by investigating how these factors impact volume calculations. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of section orientation (axial, sagittal, and coronal) and slice intervals (6, 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20 slices) on volume calculations from CBCT images using stereological techniques, specifically the planimetry and point-counting methods. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five irregularly shaped intraosseous defects were created in seven bovine femoral condyles. Volume estimations were performed using both planimetry and point counting methods on axial, sagittal, and coronal sectionsat varying slice intervals . Actual volume measurements, serving as the gold standard, were obtained using Archimedes' principle. This cross-sectional study design was employed to assess the influence of section orientation and slice interval on volumetric measurements. Results: No significant differences were found between section orientations (P = 0.051) or between methods (P = 0.628). Interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis showed high agreement for both section orientation (0.951, 95% CI: 0.90 - 0.98) and slice intervals (0.923, 95% CI: 0.90 - 0.98). All calculated volumes were consistent with Archimedes' principle. Minor deviations, possibly due to measurement errors, did not reach statistical significance. These results suggest that section orientation and slice interval selection do not significantly impact the accuracy of volumetric measurements. Conclusion: Volumetric estimations were not significantly influenced by section orientation (axial, coronal, and sagittal) or slice interval variations when using planimetry and point-counting methods. These findings suggest that measurement accuracy is relatively robust with respect to these technical parameters.

Considering the difficulties presented by changed tooth growth patterns in amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), which might influence clinical decisions and treatment planning, the purpose of this study is to assess the accuracy of dental age assessment in Turkish children with AI in comparison to controls. A total of 416 Turkish children, ages 5 to 13.99, had their panoramic images examined in this retrospective study (104 with AI and 312 controls, 1:3 ratio). The London Atlas method and Cameriere’s European formula were used to estimate dental age. To improve accuracy, a new regression equation was created, and the outcomes were compared using statistical analysis. Chronologic age and Cameriere’s European formula did not differ statistically significantly in either group (p = 0.226). However, there were statistically significant variations (p < 0.001) in the dental age estimates from the London Atlas approach, which were overstated by roughly 0.39–0.69 years in both groups. Using Cameriere’s formula, the new regression equation described 90.8% of the deviance in children with AI, while the London Atlas technique explained 83.0%. Accurate dental age estimation is crucial for children with AI, and the findings emphasize the superiority of Cameriere’s European formula over the London Atlas method, reinforcing the need for reliable techniques tailored to this unique population.
