A comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution and dynamic changes of soil properties are the basis for sustainable land management. Topography and land use types are key factors affecting soil property variability. This study analyzed the effects of land use types and landscape locations on soil properties, based on data from 111 points of surface soil (0–20 cm) in the Zhujiagou catchment on the Loess Plateau of Northwest China. Soil properties include clay, silt, bulk density (BD), soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). Land use types include slope farmland (SFL), terrace farmland (TFL), check-dam farmland (CDL), woodland (WL), shrub land (SL) and grassland (GL). Landscape locations include crest (CT), upper slope (US), middle slope (MS), lower slope (LS) and flat valley (FV). Topographical attributes were divided into primary and secondary (or compound) attributes. Correlation analyses were carried out between soil properties and terrain attribute, and multiple-linear regression models were established to estimate soil properties using land use types and topographic attributes as independents. Results indicated that significant differences in soil properties existed between six land use types, except for bulk density. Higher values of clay, silt, SOM and TN occurred in soils from check-dam farmland, but lower values in soils from shrub land. Significant differences among landscape positions were observed for clay, BD, SOM and TN. Clay, SOM and TN contents on flat valley (FV) positions were higher than those of other positions. Different correlations were found between soil properties and terrain attributes. The regression models explained 13% to 63% of the variability of the measured soil properties, and the model for Clay had the highest R2 value, followed by TN, silt, BD, SOM and TP. Validation results of the regression models showed that the model was precise for soil bulk density, but the variation was large and a high smoothing effect existed for predicted values of other soil properties. For TP, the predicted result was poor. Further observations suggested that land use was the dominant factor affecting soil chemical properties. But for soil physical properties, especially for BD, topography was the dominant factor.

The unreasonable application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer leads to high nutrient losses and severe potential of agricultural non-point source contamination, which threatens water quality in the upper Yellow River Basin. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the effects of N application rates and various control measures on rice yield and N leaching in paddy fields in the Yellow River irrigation area. Four treatments were employed in this study, CK (no N fertilizer application, 0 kg N∙ha−1), CRU (controlled-release urea application, 180 kg N∙ha−1), OPT (optimal N fertilizer application, 210 kg N∙ha−1), and FP (N fertilizer application based on farmer experience, 240 kg N∙ha−1), to examine paddy yield, N use efficiency (NUE), N concentrations in leaching water at various soil depths, and N contents along the 0–100 cm depth of the soil profile. The results indicated that the amount of TN leached was 25.14–48.04 kg∙ha−1 after different N applications, and the TN leaching coefficients of FP, OPT, and CRU were 10.88%, 11.27%, and 7.07%. Compared to FP and OPT, the CRU significantly reduced the concentrations of TN, ammonium N (NH4+-N), and nitrate N (NO3−-N) in the surface and soil water, with average TN leaching decreasing by 31.55% and 27.35% in the years 2022 and 2023, respectively. NO3−-N was identified as the primary form of N leached from the paddy fields. Compared to FP and OPT treatments, the CRU treatment increased the average paddy yield by 19.99–20.66% and improved the average NUE by 19.04–16.38%. This study revealed that the application of high amounts of N positively affected soil N leaching, and controlled-release urea demonstrates superior efficacy compared to conventional fertilization. The application of controlled-release urea at a rate of 180 kg N∙ha−1 not only ensures a good paddy yield but also reduce N losses, which should be recommended to local farmers.

Land-use zoning provides an effective tool for designing and implementing differentiated farmland-protection policies. Despite the exponential increase in research on farmland zoning in recent years, little research has comprehensively explored the supply, demand and relationships of the diverse functions of farmland. In this study, multi-sourced datasets and diverse methods, along with GIS, were combined to spatially evaluate the supply, demand and relationship patterns among the production, ecological and landscape-cultural functions of the farmland of Hangzhou City in China, to construct farmland zoning. The results indicate that high production supply was mostly concentrated in flat plains, whereas highly ecological farmland was frequently observed in mountains. Both urban and rural areas had the capacity to provide aesthetics and recreation. Regarding demand, high values were mainly observed near the downtown area. Additionally, supply-and-demand matching (SDM) and multi-functional coupling and coordination degree (MCCD) were evaluated. Among the four basic zones acquired by SDM analysis, two zones dominated by more than one function were further divided into four sub-regions, according to the MCCD values. Ultimately, six farmland-use zones were determined. By considering the supply, demand and relationships of multiple functions, this farmland-zoning program offers new insights into differentiated farmland protection.

Monitoring and mapping agricultural cultural ecosystem services (CES) is essential, especially in areas with a sharp contradiction between agricultural land protection and urban development. Despite research assessing CES increasing exponentially in recent years, our knowledge of the CES of agricultural landscapes is still inadequate. This study used four types of agricultural landscapes in Hangzhou, China, as the study area, analyzed their CES spatial patterns, and explored their societal preferences by integrating the multi-sourced datasets, clustering algorithms, and Maxent model. The results indicated that hot spots of agricultural CES correspond to river valley plains, which were also easily vulnerable to urbanization. Moreover, we found that the CES level of paddy field and dry farmland were higher than tea garden and orchard. Based on the above spatial patterns of supply, demand, and flow of CES, we identified four groups of agricultural land by cluster analysis, distinguishing between significant, unimportant, little used, and potential CES. Further, our results showed that natural and human factors could explain societal preferences. This study can provide a valuable basis for stakeholders to develop balanced strategies by the aforementioned results.

As a key facilitator of agricultural technology diffusion, the development and implementation of agricultural standards significantly shape future agricultural technology innovation. This study analyzes China’s agricultural economic development from 2004 to 2019. It integrates agricultural standard stocks and patent stocks into a Cobb–Douglas production function. Patents serve as a proxy for technological progress, reflecting innovation capacity, while standards represent the institutionalization and diffusion of technological advancements. The analysis focuses on the average annual growth rates of agricultural capital, labor, patents, and standards to clarify their respective contributions to agricultural development. The results show that capital contributes 19.951%, though constrained by inefficiencies. Labor accounts for 38.779% but shows negative elasticity (−0.403%), reflecting the decline of rural labor and the need for mechanization. Patents contribute the most at 42.021%, though limited by weak technology diffusion. Agricultural standards contribute 5.323%, with their impact restricted by adoption barriers. The findings highlight the growing role of technological innovation in agriculture. Strengthening standardization systems and promoting broader adoption of agricultural standards are key to advancing sustainable agricultural development in China.
