Membraneous nephropathy (MN) is the most commonly occurring nephrotic syndrome in adults as well as the most common paraneoplastic nephropathy associated with solid tumors, and it is mostly associated with gastrointestinal system and lung carcinomas. Accurate diagnosis is important as the treatment of paraneoplastic glomerulonephritis is very varied from that of idiopathic ones. In the current report, a case of a patient that was referred with proteinuria and edema and was diagnosed with lung cancer, and responded markedly to treatment of malignancy, with improvement of MN, is presented. Active cancer is present in all patients with paraneoplastic MN. In numerous patients, the paraneoplastic MN and cancer diagnoses are made within one year of each other. The treatment of paraneoplastic syndromes is usually associated with the treatment of primary malignancy. There are conflicting data on which treatment modality is more suitable. In conclusion, further studies are required in order to determine the actual incidence of cancer in patients with nephropathy, explain the physiopathological association between cancer and nephropathy and to determine the most suitable treatment approaches.

Objectives: The clinicopathological characteristics, treatment modalities, and effects on the prognosis of pure squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) and adenocarcinoma (AC) were evaluated. Materials and Methods: 86 patients with pure SqCC and AC bladder cancer were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Of the 86 patients, 51 had SqCC and 35 had AC. No differences in clinicopathological characteristics were observed between patients with AC and SqCC, except for the prevalence of T4 disease (28.6% vs. 51.0%, respectively). In multivariate analysis, older age, stage IV disease, and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (> 2) were predictive of a poor overall survival (OS). The median OS was significantly longer for stage I-III patients (82.9 months) treated with surgery ± chemotherapy (CT) ± radiotherapy (RT) than for those treated with transurethral resection ± CT ± RT (24.3 months) (P = 0.007). The median OS of patients with SqCC and AC who were given platinum-based CT for metastasis was 7.7 and 30.3 months, respectively. Conclusions: Advanced age, stage IV disease, and poor ECOG performance status were factors associated with a poor prognosis. Surgery ± CT ± RT resulted in significantly better OS, except in stage IV disease. Patients with metastatic AC had better response rates with platinum-based CT.

Purpose Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is an extremely fatal and relatively rare gastrointestinal system malignancy. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting survival in operated patients with ESCC. Materials and Methods We included 110 patients (38 [34.5%] male; 72 [65.5%] female) aged ≥ 18 (median age, 54 [26–77]) years who were operated without any signs of metastases and followed up at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Dursun Odabaşı Medical Center between 2004 and 2019. Results Initially, 39 (35.5%) patients were clinical lymph node-positive and 71 (64.5%) patients were negative. Thirty-five (31.8%) patients underwent surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT), and 75 (%68.2) patients underwent direct surgery without nCRT. Five-year overall survival (OS) was 84.4% and 59.2% in patients who underwent surgery after nCRT and in those who underwent direct surgery, respectively. Median OS was significantly longer in patients who underwent surgery after nCRT (p = 0.003). There was a statistically significant difference in OS in patients who underwent surgery after nCRT depending on tumor response (p = 0.04). In multivariate analysis, advanced pathologic stage (p = 0.002) adversely affected survival, whereas nCRT administration (p = 0.031) positively affected OS. Conclusion We suggest that nCRT should be administrated before surgery, especially in locally advanced ESCCs. In addition, we believe that nCRT response can be used as a good parameter for survival. These results, however, should be supported by prospective studies.

This study aimed to investigate the most appropriate treatment options for patients with non-epithelioid malignant pleural mesothelioma. We retrospectively analyzed patients with non-epithelioid malignant pleural mesothelioma who received treatment at our center. Forty-two patients were included in this study. Hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOT) was performed in 20 (47.6 %) patients. There were 20 (47.6 %) patients in the macroscopic complete resection (MCR) group and 22 (52.4 %) patients in the non-MCR group. The median overall survival (mOS) of patients in the MCR group was 16 (95 % CI,7.2-24.8) months, and the mOS of patients in the non-MCR group was 6 (95 % CI,2.9-9.1) months (p = 0.001). The mOS of patients who underwent HITHOT was 12 (95%CI,5.4-18.6) months, and the mOS of non-HITHOT patents was 6 (95%CI,2.6-9.4) months (p = 0.007). The mOS of patients who did and did not undergo the HITHOT in the MCR group was 21 and 15 months, respectively (p = 0.161). The mOS of biphasic subtype patients was 11 (95%CI,6.8-15.2) months and sarcomatoid subtype patients was 6 (95%CI,3.1-8.9) months (p = 0.179). In the OS analysis, performing MCR (p = 0.003), applying HITHOT (p = 0.012), TNM stage (p = 0.006), and receiving adjuvant chemotherapy (p = 0.001) were found to be significant factors. In the multivariate analysis for OS, the HITHOT application was found to be a significant parameter (p = 0.035). The mOS of patients who achieved MCR in non-epithelioid malignant pleural mesothelioma was better than that of patients who did not achieve MCR. However, the OS of patients who underwent the HITHOT was better than that of patients who did not.
