Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) evolve into debris flows by erosion and sediment entrainment while propagating down a valley, which highly increases peak discharge and volume and causes destructive damage downstream. This study focuses on GLOF hazard assessment in the Bhote Koshi Basin (BKB), where was highly developed glacial lakes and was intensely affected by the Gorkha earthquake. A new 2016 glacial lake inventory was established, and six unreported GLOF events were identified with geomorphic outburst evidence from GaoFen-1 satellite images and Google Earth. A new method was proposed to assess GLOF hazard, in which large numbers of landslides triggered by earthquake were considered to enter into outburst floods enlarge the discharge and volume of debris flow in the downstream. Four GLOF hazard classes were derived according to glacial lake outburst potential and a flow magnitude assessment matrix, in which 11 glacial lakes were identified to have very high hazard and 24 to have high hazard. The GLOF hazard in BKB increased after the earthquake due to landslide deposits, which increased by 216.03 × 106 m3, and provides abundant deposits for outburst floods to evolve into debris flows. We suggest that in regional GLOF hazard assessment, small glacial lakes should not be overlooked for landslide deposit entrainment along a flood route that would increase the peak discharge, especially in earthquake-affected areas where large numbers of landslides were triggered.

In order to study the feasibility of kraft paper as watercolor paper, the wetting properties, mechanical properties and friction properties of kraft paper and watercolor paper were compared before and after aging. The aging test was carried out on kraft paper and the watercolor paper by aging chamber, the wetting properties of distilled water and three watercolor solutions before and after aging of kraft paper and watercolor paper were compared, tensile tear test of paper on the tensile testing machine, the fracture changes of paper were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, the friction tester performs the paper friction test. The results show that both kinds of paper are amorphous, watercolor paper was showed hydrophobicity before and after the aging, the contact angle was maintained at about 119,09° ± 5° in four different solutions, unaged kraft paper exhibited hydrophilicity, the aged kraft paper showed hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 92,52° ± 1°,the aged kraft paper shows better performance in both tensile and tearing aspects and tensile strength is 20 MPa higher than watercolor paper, the surface roughness of kraft paper is higher than watercolor paper. The experiment is helpful for the market to consider whether the cheaper kraft paper replaces the more expensive watercolor paper in some aspects and provides some scientific reference value for future research.

The extreme rainstorm flood disaster in Beijing on 31 July 2023 resulted in 33 fatalities and 18 missing persons, with direct economic losses across the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei metropolitan area exceeding RMB 10 billion. Despite its inland location, which is not conventionally classified as a flood-prone zone, Beijing is not conventionally considered a flood-prone region, yet it frequently experiences flood disasters, which has led to confusion and perplexity. This article collects records of historical flooding disasters in Beijing over the past 1000 years, spanning the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, the Republics of China, and the founding of New China up to the present, aiming to analyze the basic patterns and characteristics of regional historical flooding disasters. Taking the extreme rainstorm flood disaster in Beijing on 31 July 2023 as an example, this research employs a multidisciplinary approach, including field investigations and numerical simulations, to dissect the disaster-causing mechanisms. The study shows that the significant characteristics of historical flood disasters in Beijing are concentrated in the plain area and the high-frequency outbreaks (below the 3-year return period). Flood disaster events under the participation of typhoons accounted for a high proportion and caused great harm. The extreme rainstorm flood disaster in Beijing on 31 July 2023 was an extreme weather event under the complex coupling of typhoons and terrain. The residual typhoon circulation stayed on the mainland for nearly 70 h, providing abundant precipitation conditions for Beijing. Water vapor is blocked by the Yanshan–Taihang Mountains, uplifting and converging, forming a strong precipitation center in the Piedmont, which aggravates the regional local precipitation intensity. The research results can provide a reference for the scientific prevention and control of typhoon rainstorm flood disasters in Beijing.
