More and more attention in sewage sludge management is being devoted to its environmental utilization. This approach is justified both from economic and environmental points of view. However, as with any method, there are certain possibilities and limitations. The goal of the natural utilization of sewage sludge is to recover the valuable agronomic properties and fertilizing potential of the sludge. The main aspect limiting the possibility of using sludge as a fertilizer is the heavy metal content. In this paper, an analysis of the risk of environmental contamination in the case of application of sewage sludge with different forms of sludge treatment was carried out. Risk indices such as Igeo and PERI, based on the comparison of total metal content in sludge and soil, as well as RAC and ERD indices, which take into account the mobility of metals in soil, were calculated. It was shown that high levels of potential risk and geoaccumulation indicators do not necessarily disqualify the use of sewage sludge, the key aspect is the form of mobility in which the heavy metals are found in the sludge, and this should be the only aspect taken into account for the possibility of their environmental use.

Electrical cables are a potential source of ignition and fire hazards in various types of buildings and industrial installations, as well as in all modes of transportation, including aircraft. Fires in buildings pose the greatest threat to human life and health. The composition of thermal degradation products depends mainly on the type of combustible materials and the type of combustion process—flaming or smoldering. The purpose of this paper was to determine, based on experimental studies, the effects of flaming and smoldering combustion on the response times of fire smoke detectors. In addition, the concentrations of fire gases formed in the process of duct combustion, including CO, SO2, NO2, NO, HCN, HCl, HBr and HF, were measured using an FTIR spectrometer. The results presented confirm the significant effect of the way the cable samples burned on detector tripping time. The highest concentration of smoke (Y) in the test chamber was obtained during flame combustion. It was further found that the characteristics of the cable insulation material used, such as the type of PVC, had a significant effect on the toxicity of the emitted gases. The largest amounts of toxic gases were emitted during the smoldering combustion of a cable with a plasticized PVC sheath.

The primary purpose of the analysis presented here is to assess the feasibility of effectively predicting the aggregate luminance coefficient. Current road lighting standards and recommendations are based on assessing the level and distribution of luminance on the road surface. The brightness of a road surface depends on the amount of light falling on it, as well as the reflective properties of the road surface, which in turn depend on its physical condition, type and mineralogical composition. The complexity of the factors on which the value of the luminance coefficient depends it makes that data mining techniques the most appropriate tools for evaluation luminance coefficient phenomenon. This article uses five types of techniques: C&RT, boosted trees, random forest, neural network, and support vector machines. After a preliminary analysis, it was determined that the most effective technique was the boosted tree method. The results of the analysis indicated that the actual value of the luminance coefficient has multiple modal values within a single aggregate stockpile, depending on the mineralogical composition and grain size, and cannot be determined by a single central measure. The present model allowed us to determine the value of the luminance coefficient Qd with a mean error of 4.3 mcd-m−2·lx−1. In addition, it was found that the best aggregate for pavement brightening that allows high visibility during the day Qd and at night RL is a limestone aggregate. In the group of those that have the ability to potentially brighten the pavement were quartzite and granite aggregates.

The PN-EN 197-1:2012 standard allows the use of additives as the main component above 5.0% by mass, as well as as a secondary component in an amount less than 5.0% by mass of cement. Proper selection of additives positively affects the rheological characteristics and hardened concrete parameters during longer maturity periods. Additives have already become an integral component of concrete mixes. The aim of the research is to confirm the possibility of using the tested additive in the composition of concrete mixes in an amount of 15% relative to the amount of cement, which would solve the problem of storing and utilizing waste generated during the production of broken chalcedonite aggregates. The planned laboratory tests were carried out for concrete of three classes, C30/37, C35/45, C40/50, according to the PN-EN 206+A1:2016-2 standard, with the addition of chalcedonite dust in a constant amount of 15% relative to cement, and three series without additives as control series. The additive used for concrete mixes was chalcedonite dust with a diameter below 72 μm. It is waste from a broken aggregate mine. The research program included rheological tests of fresh concrete mix, i.e., air content, consistency, bulk density, as well as parameters of hardened concrete mix—compressive strength, absorbability, and capillary uptake. Compressive strength was tested after 7, 14, 28, 56, and 90 days. The laboratory tests aimed to verify whether the addition of 15% chalcedonite dust additive would not worsen the predicted hardened concrete parameters resulting from the designed concrete classes. All three tested series, C30/37, C35/45, and C40/50, with the addition of 15% chalcedonite dust relative to the amount of cement, achieved the assumed strength classes after 28 days of maturation. Concrete mix components were correctly designed. The addition of chalcedonite dust to the concrete mix did not cause a decrease in compressive strength to the extent that the analyzed series did not meet the normative requirements for concrete classes according to the PN-EN 206+A1:2014 standard. The results of absorbability testing indicate water absorption below 5%, while the increase in sample mass in the capillary uptake test gained similar values.

The primary objective of the research and analysis reported in this article was to determine an effective method for predicting the luminance coefficient of the mineral mixture for asphalt concrete and stone mastic asphalt. The luminance of the mineral mixture determines the final luminance value of the surface. Predicting the luminance coefficient quickly will significantly improve the mineral–asphalt mix design efficiency in selecting aggregates that meet functional requirements and increase the brightness of the surface. The research process consisted of two stages. The first stage covered modelling the Qd luminance coefficient of aggregate, taking into account its petrographic analysis. The second fundamental stage, based on the research of the first stage, concerned the modelling of the luminance coefficient of the mineral mixture, taking into account the percentage share of a given component, its grain size, and its photometric properties. An effective technique of reinforced trees was used for modelling. As a result of its application, a model match to experimental data was achieved at the level of 87%. It has also been shown that the greatest impact on increasing the luminance coefficient of the mineral mixture was the use of light aggregate (quartzite sandstone or limestone) with a grain size of 2/5 in quantities > 40% or 8/11 in quantities > 60%. Furthermore, the quartzite sandstone aggregates with a grain size of 5/8 had the highest efficiency in lightening the mineral mixture. However, the use of basalt aggregates of the same fraction significantly worsened the photometric properties of the mineral mixture. An important element of the research was also to indicate that the mineralogical composition of the aggregate is crucial for an accurate assessment of its luminance coefficient.

The article describes the results of pull-off adhesion strength of the FRCM-PBO (Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix-p-Phenylene benzobis oxazole) composite adhered to the epoxy resin layer which is the connector with the timber beam. In addition, this paper shows the results of the tests of resistance to pull-off the epoxy resin layer from the pine beam. The tests were carried out based on the Polish Standard PN-EN 1542. The Pearson linear correlation analysis was also carried out in order to determine the correlation between the obtained results and the destructive forces. The factors that occurred during the test that may affect its results, such as the method of applying the bursting force, surface preparation of the tested elements and the types of substrate destruction, were also characterized. The experimental data show that in all the tested samples, non-initial adhesive destruction between the adhesive layer and the disc was observed.
