Lake and its inflow rivers compose a highly linked river-lake system, within which sediment and water are also closely connected. However, our understanding of this linked and interactive system remains unclear. In this study, we examined bacterial communities in the sediments and surface waters in Poyang Lake and its five tributaries. Bacterial communities were determined while using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed significant differences of bacterial communities between sediments and surface waters, as well as between Poyang lake and its tributaries, suggesting that the river-lake system of Poyang Lake provides diverse and distinct habitats for bacterial communities, including lake water, lake sediment, river water, and river sediment. These biomes harbor distinct bacterial assemblages. Sediments harbor more diverse bacterial taxa than surface waters, but the bacterial communities in surface waters were more different across this river-lake system than those in sediments. In this eutrophic river-lake ecosystem, nitrogen and phosphorus were important drivers in sediment bacterial communities. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved organic carbon, as well as their stoichiometric ratios affected bacterial communities in surface waters. Moreover, network analysis revealed that the bacterial communities in surface waters were more vulnerable to various disturbances than in sediments, due to lower alpha diversity, high complexity of network, and a small number of key taxa (module hubs and connectors). Nutrient variables had strong influences on individual operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the network, especially in bacterial network in surface waters. Different groups of taxa responded differently to nutrients, with some modules being more susceptible to nutrient variations. This study increased our current knowledge of linked river-lake ecosystems and provided valuable understanding for effective management and protection of these ecosystems by revealing bacterial communities in sediments and surface waters in Poyang Lake and its tributaries, as well as their responses to nutrients variation.

Urban storm runoff is a major source of pollutants in receiving water bodies. To assess the impact of urban stormwater runoff on an urban river, the runoff process of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium (NH4), and total phosphorus (TP) were investigated on road surfaces classified as arterial road (AR), residential area (RA), and industrial area (IA) in the Pingshan River (PSR) watershed in Shenzhen, China. Event mean concentration (EMC) was calculated to analyze the water quality of road runoff, and the dimensionless M(V) cumulative curves were used to estimate the course of decreasing concentration of runoff pollutants during each rainfall event. Multicriteria decision making methods (PROMETHEE-GAIA) were used to identify the linkage between runoff pollutants, land use types, and rainfall intensity. The EMCs of COD and TP in runoff exceeded the class IV level of the water quality standard for surface water (China). RA was a major potential source for NH4, COD, and TP in the river. Controlling the first flush is critical to decrease the effect of road runoff on receiving water bodies, as most runoff pollutants in AR, RA, and IA had a first flush effect during heavy rainfall. The specific management measure for runoff pollution varied with land use type. Reducing road TSS concentrations was effective for controlling runoff pollution in AR and RA because NH4, TP, and COD attached to particulate matter. In IA, the collection and reuse of stormwater in the initial rainfall period were effective for reducing the effect of soluble pollutants in runoff on receiving water bodies. This study provides new information for managing urban road stormwater runoff in different land use types.

As the largest freshwater lake in China, water environmental pollution in Poyang Lake is increasingly attracting attention. However, to date, the occurrence of seldom-monitored trace elements (SMTEs) (such as thallium (Tl) and cobalt (Co)) and their potential ecological influences in the Poyang Lake area remain unclear. Here, geochemical baseline concentrations (GBCs) were employed to investigate anthropogenic inputs of these two metals (Tl and Co) and were used to assess the potential ecological risk in surface sediments of Poyang Lake. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Tl and Co were 1.11 mg/kg and 15.42 mg/kg, respectively, slightly higher than background values (BVs) in local soil. Spatially, the Co concentrations in surface sediments of Poyang Lake varied; Co concentrations in the west of the study area were significantly lower than in the middle of the lake. In contrast, no significant spatial variation of Tl was found in studied areas of Poyang Lake. Average GBCs were similar to the mean measured concentrations of Tl and Co in the lake, and both were higher than the BVs in local soil. In anthropogenic source analysis based on the GBCs, 47.22% samples and 41.67% samples were influenced by human activity for Tl and Co, respectively; the mean anthropogenic contribution rate was 5.90% for Tl (0.43 to 16.22%), and 13.01% for Co (0.82 to 31.59%). These results indicated that Tl and Co mainly originate from natural processes. However, the anthropogenic contribution should not be ignored. Moreover, the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological parameter (Er) generally indicated no contamination and a low potential risk for Tl and Co in Poyang Lake sediments, which used the GBCs as BVs. The results of this study suggest that GBCs are more scientifically robust and practical as a reference than BVs. They can also be used when BVs are lacking.

Seasonal water level fluctuations (WLFs) impose dramatic influences on lake ecosystems. The influences of WLFs have been well studied for many lake biotas but the microeukaryotic community remains one of the least-explored features. This study employed high-throughput 18S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of microeukaryotic communities in the dry and wet seasons with concomitant change of nutrients in Poyang Lake, which experiences huge seasonal WLFs. The results showed that the dry season and wet season had distinct microeukaryotic community compositions and structures. In the dry season, Ciliophora (13.86–40.98%) and Cryptomonas (3.69–18.64%) were the dominant taxa, and the relative abundance of these taxa were significant higher in the dry season than wet season. Ochrophyta (6.88–45.67%) and Chlorophyta (6.31–22.10%) was the dominant taxa of microeukaryotic communities in the wet season. The seasonal variation of microeukaryotic communities was strongly correlated to seasonal nutrient variations. Microeukaryotic communities responded significantly to dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, nitrate, and soluble reactive phosphorus in the dry season, and correlated to nitrate and total phosphorus in the wet season. The microeukaryotic community showed different modular structures in two seasons, and nutrient variations were the key factors influencing seasonal variations of the modular structures. Moreover, microeukaryotic community networks based on different seasons indicated that the microeukaryotic community co-occurrence patterns were not constant but varied largely associating with the nitrogen and phosphorus variations under the effects of WLFs. Our results are important for understanding how microeukaryotic communities respond to nutrient variation under seasonal water level fluctuation.

One of the key targets of community ecology and biogeography concerns revealing the variability and underlying drivers of biodiversity. Most current studies understand biodiversity based on taxonomic information alone, but few studies have shown the relative contributions of multiple abiotic factors in shaping biodiversity based on taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic information. We collected 179 samples of macroinvertebrates in the Hun-Tai River Basin. We validated the complementarity between the three facets and components of β-diversity using the Mantel test. Distance-based redundancy analysis and variance partitioning were applied to explore the comparative importance of local environmental, geo-climatic, and spatial factors on each facet and component of β-diversity. Our study found that taxonomic and phylogenetic total β-diversity was mainly forced by turnover, while functional total β-diversity was largely contributed by nestedness. There is a strong correlation between taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity. However, the correlations of functional with both taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity were relatively weak. The findings of variation partitioning suggested that distinct facets and components of macroinvertebrates’ β-diversity were impacted by abiotic factors to varying degrees. The contribution of spatial factors was greater than that of the local environment and geo-climatic factors for taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic β-diversity. Thus, studying different facets and components of β-diversity allows a clearer comprehension of the influence of abiotic factors on diversity patterns. Therefore, future research should investigate patterns and mechanisms of β-diversity from taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic perspectives.
