Topology Optimisation is a broad concept deemed to encapsulate different processes for computationally determining structural materials optimal layouts. Among such techniques, Discrete Optimisation has a consistent record in Civil and Structural Engineering. In contrast, the Optimisation of Continua recently emerged as a critical asset for fostering the employment of Additive Manufacturing, as one can observe in several other industrial fields. With the purpose of filling the need for a systematic review both on the Topology Optimisation recent applications in structural steel design and on its emerging advances that can be brought from other industrial fields, this article critically analyses scientific publications from the year 2015 to 2020. Over six hundred documents, including Research, Review and Conference articles, added to Research Projects and Patents, attained from different sources were found significant after eligibility verifications and therefore, herein depicted. The discussion focused on Topology Optimisation recent approaches, methods, and fields of application and deepened the analysis of structural steel design and design for Additive Manufacturing. Significant findings can be found in summarising the state-of-the-art in profuse tables, identifying the recent developments and research trends, as well as discussing the path for disseminating Topology Optimisation in steel construction.

Tapered steel beams and columns have been increasingly used as primary load carrying members. The determination of their accurate ultimate capacity can only be achieved employing advanced numerical methods such as the finite element method (FEM). This paper presents a systematic study on the influence of FE model parameters on the ultimate load of I-section tapered beam-columns typically used in medium-span steel frames. It aims the determination of optimal FE mesh size and sub-step number to be used during the arc-length scheme for the performance of an accurate, robust and efficient inelastic post-buckling parametric analysis (PA) as well as the evaluation of the parameters influence. Once validated the FE model, using hexahedral 8-node finite elements, FE edge sizes of 20, 25 and 30 mm and 10 sub-steps have been selected for use in the future PA. Several FE analyses were also carried out to evaluate how it is and quantify the influence of each of the parameters, leading to empirical equations with errors in the range of -35% to 35% for equations without crossed terms and -23% to 23% with first-order crossed terms.

Several suppliers of oil and gas (O & G) equipment and services have reported the necessity of making frequent resources planning adjustments due to the variability of demand, which originates in unbalanced production levels. The occurrence of these specific problems for the suppliers and operators is often related to the bullwhip effect. For studying such a problem, a research proposal is herein presented. Studying the bullwhip effect in the O & G industry requires collecting data from different levels of the supply chain, namely: services, upstream and midstream suppliers, and downstream clients. The first phase of the proposed research consists of gathering the available production and financial data. A second phase will be the statistical treatment of the data in order to evaluate the importance of the bullwhip effect in the oil and gas industry. The third phase of the program involves applying artificial neural networks (ANN) to forecast the demand. At this stage, ANN based on different training methods will be used. Further on, the attained mathematical model will be used to simulate the effects of demand fluctuations and assess the bullwhip effect in an oil and gas supply chain.

Combining fracture mechanics models for bidirectional crack growth with a Bayesian inference approach for taking into account the information acquired with structural health monitoring techniques is proposed as an analysis method for remaining fatigue life evaluation and inspection planning for fixed ocean structures. After providing a background for the proposed probabilistic analysis, as well as discussing the fundamental hypotheses and options, this paper exemplifies the method application to real data, from a case study. The method steps encompass global spectral fatigue analyses, a simplified probabilistic fatigue analysis, a deterministic fatigue analysis and a probabilistic fatigue analysis, including numerical experimentation with the Monte Carlo method.

Though Brazilian academia claims equality, the sector has largely been referred to as non-meritocratic, and academic hiring is still inward-oriented. The Lattes platform, a public curricular information system, reflects elements of this protectionism. This article assesses two ‘obsessions’ in Brazilian academia: the ‘mandatory’ Lattes CV, and the assessment criteria and procedures in public tenders for faculty positions. The current situation is introduced to the reader, and the shortcomings of these methods and their effect on academia in Brazil are analyzed. The following improvements are proposed: (1) evaluations in public tenders based on a candidate’s CV, interview, and a sample lecture, (2) removing the Lattes CV as a mandatory format, and (3) using platforms such as Microsoft Academic, Google Scholar, ORCID or ResearcherID for curricular information. With these recommendations, Brazil can move towards a more open and international-oriented academic hiring system.

Throughout the last two decades, seismic design standards evolved to ever more comprehensive and detailed prescriptions, stressing out the need for design methods that deal with earthquake effects not as actions, but as a design philosophy. The Eurocode 8 adoption as national law throughout the European Union countries and informally in many parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America is the pretext for the current study. It aims to provide some guidance to the seismic design of steel structures as well as to the Eurocode 8 implementation by the designers. Some lines on the preliminary design of structural systems were written based on several real cases of structures designed taking into account the seismic action. Such a content is, usually, relevant in any design guide, given its value in enhancing the design technical and economical content. However, it is now of utter significance at the current context as an essential tool to facilitate the safety checking of several code requirements. Some of the Eurocode 8 prescriptions are then decoded, explained and justified based on the supportive bibliography. The information is subsequently ordered as a design guide, where some procedures are proposed to cope with the code interrelated prescriptions and one structural solution is proposed in order to overcome a design challenge while complying with the code. One last but not less relevant addressed issue is the fact that some Eurocode 8 prescriptions may be reviewed, in the eyes of a designer, given its practical outcome. Such issues are identified, explained and some slight code adjustments are suggested.

Cellular beams are an attractive option for the steel construction industry due to their versatility in terms of strength, size, and weight. Further benefits are the integration of services thereby reducing ceiling-to-floor depth (thus, building’s height), which has a great economic impact. Moreover, the complex localized and global failures characterizing those members have led several scientists to focus their research on the development of more efficient design guidelines. This paper aims to propose an artificial neural network (ANN)-based formula to precisely compute the critical elastic buckling load of simply supported cellular beams under uniformly distributed vertical loads. The 3645-point dataset used in ANN design was obtained from an extensive parametric finite element analysis performed in ABAQUS. The independent variables adopted as ANN inputs are the following: beam’s length, opening diameter, web-post width, cross-section height, web thickness, flange width, flange thickness, and the distance between the last opening edge and the end support. The proposed model shows a strong potential as an effective design tool. The maximum and average relative errors among the 3645 data points were found to be 3.7% and 0.4%, respectively, whereas the average computing time per data point is smaller than a millisecond for any current personal computer.

Seismic design of concentrically X-braced steel frames to Eurocode 8 entails several difficulties to practitioners, often resulting in excessively heavy structural solutions. The main objective of the research presented in this paper is to propose modifications to the existing provisions of the code aiming to achieve more efficient designs. A number of possible amendments to the European seismic code are examined, concerning the non-dimensional slenderness parameter and the homogenous dissipative behaviour criterion. It is found that the relaxation of the design criteria leads to identical frame behaviour in comparison to frames fully designed to Eurocode 8.
