Currently, intensive work is underway in Poland to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy balance. Therefore, this paper presents the possibilities of using concentrated solar power in zones with a temperate climate. A simplified model based on the energy balance in the solar collectors considering the main operating parameters of the typical solar power plant was developed. It should be noted here that the model does not take into account issues related to heat accumulation and electricity generation in a Solar Thermal Power Station. The simulation of forced convection inside the solar collector absorber was additionally included in the calculations to improve its accuracy. The model was verified using actual heat measurements at the outlet of the parabolic collector installation at a Solar Thermal Power Station located in the south of Spain. The heat generated by a similar solar collector system in a selected region with a temperate climate, the city of Bialystok (north-eastern Poland, geographic coordinates: 53°08′07″ N 23°08′44″ E) was determined by the developed simplified model for different months of the year. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the energy obtained from the same area of concentrated solar collectors located near Bialystok is eight times lower compared to the location in Cordoba depending on the variant of the power plant operation.

The spread of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) levied on the Moroccan authorities to increase their mask production capacity, which reached up to 12 million facemask units produced per day. This increase in personal protective equipment (PPE) production and consumption is an efficient tool to address the spread of COVID-19. However, this results in more plastic and microplastic debris being added into the land and marine environments, which will harm the ecosystem, wildlife, and public health. Such a situation needs deep individual behavior observation and tracking, as well as an assessment of the potential environmental impact of this new type of waste. For this reason, we assessed the Moroccan population’s behavior regarding the use and disposal of facemasks and gloves. An exploratory survey was prepared and shared via social media and email with the population of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra and Casablanca-Settat regions. Additionally, we calculated the estimated number and weight of daily and weekly PPE used and generated by the studied regions. The survey showed that 70% of the respondents threw their discarded masks and gloves in house trash or trash bins after their first use, whereas nearly 30% of respondents admitted that they did not wear masks because they did not leave their homes during the lockdown, while from the 70% of facemask users, more than five million (equivalent to 40,000 kg) of facemasks would be generated and disposed of daily by the community of these regions, which presents 35% of the total engendered facemask waste in Morocco. Accordingly, the environment impact of facemasks showed that the greenhouse gas footprint is about 640 kT CO2 eq./year for the whole of Morocco, while the energy footprint is around 60,000 GWh/year. Furthermore, an urgent multidisciplinary environmental assessment of the potential impact of PPE must be conducted among the 12 Moroccan regions. This study demonstrated the real impact of the COVID-19 PPE on human behavior and the environment and suggests a need for providing new didactic management of facemasks and gloves.

The applicability of high voltage electrical discharge to reform Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as an environmental pollutant is a technique extensively proved. By this motive, the study of plasma with pure CO2 or its mixtures with other gases is the current interest. In this work, the physical and technical characteristics of a positive direct-current plasma discharge of an Ar/CO2 mixture in a point-to-plate reactor is experimentally and numerically analyzed, and its dependence on Ar fraction studied. Through the optical emission spectroscopy method, the experiments are performed to analyze the emitted spectra from the plasma discharge of the Ar/CO2 mixture. The rotation, vibration, and excitation temperatures and the electron density are also obtained. It was found that all the temperatures decrease as the argon ratio in the Ar/CO2 mixtures increases. Besides, using a 2D PIC-MCC method, the density of three charged species and excitation temperatures are spatially and temporally computed. At the study conditions, a relatively good experimental/modeling agreement is observed for the density and temperature of electrons. Also, the spatial and temporal variations of electric potential and total current density in the discharge medium are numerically calculated by this model, allow us to know the electric characteristic of the discharge.

The interaction of an argon microwave plasma jet with a benzene layer on water has been analyzed under different conditions (power, gas flow, plasma‐sample distance, and treatment time) in this study. Main products formed upon treatment are phenol, catechol, and nitrobenzene, which shows that this jet is a source of radicals •OH and •NO2, inducing benzene oxidation and nitration. Excited argon species in the plasma have been proven to play an outstanding role in degradation processes, which mostly occur at the gas phase. Results are compared with those from the direct interaction of the plasma jet with water. For this purpose, aqueous solutions of 3‐coumarin carboxylic acid are treated and the hydroxylation of this compound is studied. The effect of the benzene layer preventing water evaporation is demonstrated.

Cold atmospheric argon plasma jets have shown to be very promising in medicine and they are being currently used for therapeutical uses as the healing of wounds or the treatment of tumors. Because they run in the open atmosphere, they generate copious amounts of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, which play an outstanding role in their biological action. But, in this kind of reactors, unknown amounts of air enter the plasma region depending on the experimental conditions, changing the chemistry in them, and eventually their effects. In this work, we propose a new spectroscopic method to measure the amount of air in argon nor-thermal (including cold atmospheric) plasma jets through the collisional broadening of Ar I 840.86 and Ar I 842.46 nm emission lines. The method allows the simultaneous determination of the gas temperature. For validation purposes, it was applied to a microwave-induced plasma jet working at different operational conditions. Results were consistent with those obtained from the rotational temperature derived from simulations of N2(2nd positive system) rovibrational band.

Human health is dependent on the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) of residential and public buildings, where people spend a substantial amount of time. Part of IAQ parameters, like temperature or humidity influence the thermal comfort of users, whereas too high carbon dioxide concentration (CO2) could cause various complaints or diseases. In buildings like offices and schools, where we have a brush with a high density of users, the main source of CO2 is simply people. The type of their activity brings higher or lower carbon dioxide gains, that must be taken into account to design and properly use room ventilation, allowing recommended CO2 levels not to be exceeded. This paper presents an approach to marking human CO2 generation off by using an experimental method. The method was verified based on measuring results of six test series conducted in different types of rooms at Bialystok University of Technology (Poland) during lectures, meetings, projects and laboratories. Carbon dioxide gains were comparable with an average value of 0.0045 L/s, which corresponds to theoretical CO2 generation rates that are symptomatic of males and females, between 16 and 30 years old, with low physical activity.

The paper presents an analysis of heat loss and reductions of annual emissions of air pollutants of a quadruple pre-insulated heating network by comparing this solution with the existing pre-insulated network consisting of four pre-insulated single pipes and the variant consisting of two twin pipe pre-insulated. For calculations, an existing heating network located in central Poland was adopted, where heat is transported for heating purposes of buildings and domestic hot water with circulation of domestic hot water through four separate pre-insulated underground pipes. The idea of the construction of four pre-insulated pipes presented in the paper consists in the location of four steel pipes in a common round thermal insulation, which perform the role of heat transport for heating purposes in multi-family buildings (supply and return) and two pipes transporting hot water (a pipe with domestic hot water with circulation). In Poland, heating pipes used in multi-family housing have a larger diameter compared to domestic hot water pipes, which is why standard twin pipe heating pipes have been used in the construction of four pre-insulated networks, in which the domestic hot water pipe has been added to the thermal insulation and circulation of domestic hot water. In order to determine heat losses, a simplified two-dimensional model of conductive heat transfer was developed using Fortran to create a computer program. The results of numerical simulations show that the use of twin pipes for the construction of pre-insulated quadruple networks has contributed to a significant reduction in heat loss in relation to the existing single pre-insulated network (up to 57.1%), while reducing the thermal insulation field of the cross-section of the pre-insulated pipe by 21.4%.

This research aims to show the advisability of usage of selected renewable energy sources for domestic hot water (DHW) installations in buildings located in Poland and Spain. The analysis was conducted for a typical kindergarten, an example of buildings with high density of people and stable profile of usage, as opposed to schools which are closed during summer holidays. We took into account national regulations to estimate heat demand. Then applying solar collectors and heat pumps to use as a monovalent energy sources were considered. The total cost of the system with solar collectors in Poland was found to be 1.4 times higher than in Spain, whereas the difference in a case of air heat pumps was 18%. Moreover efficiency of solar collector and heat pump systems were found as 49.56% for Warsaw, 52.29% for Madrid with coefficient of performance (COP) 2.2 and 2.55 respectively, therefore simple payback time (SPBT) of investment was estimated in a range between 6–12 years for solar collectors and 5–6 years for heat pumps.

This paper discusses issues related to cooling load and energy consumption for air conditioning systems and presents the results of calculations conducted for six different climate localizations: three in Poland (Bialystok, Warsaw, Wroclaw) and three in Spain (Burgos, Madrid, Cordoba). Analysis was conducted for a same lecture hall design for 100 users locates in the different cities. During cooling load calculations, we focused on gains from diverse type of heat sources: electrical devices, air infiltration, heat transfer trough envelope and occupants. Calculations were made for a comfort temperature that was set at 22°C in Poland and 24°C in Spain following previous studies [11]. The highest contributions to cooling load correspond to occupancy and solar gains which depends mainly on outdoor conditions. In Poland, cooling load was found similar for different locations, while in Spain, they are big differences between cities located in North and South of this country by effect of different outdoor conditions. The work also compares cost of air condition annual energy consumption costs for the air conditioning system. Highest cost for cooling was found in Spain (Cordoba) with value (2629 €) almost 378% higher than average Polish cost.

Air-based atmospheric-pressure cold plasmas are a source of charged particles, excited species, radicals, and UV rays, known to induce degradation of biomaterials. In this work we characterize an air-based Dielectric Barrier Discharge plasma source designed for biofilm eradication, and study plasmas generated under different conditions by Optical Emission Spectroscopy. The main excited species in air-based plasmas are N2 (C3Πu) molecules and the gas temperatures never exceed 335 K, decreasing as air amounts increase in the feeding gas. Excited oxygen atoms and OH species are only detected in discharges generated in argon-containing gases. The temperature of the effluent remains below 308 K. Air-based plasmas are useful for biofilm eradication as they produce high amounts of ozone at a low gas temperature.

Carbon dioxide concentration is an important parameter to know Indoor Air Quality of a building. One of the most important sources of CO2 in poor ventilated building is human activity. This work presents a method for experimental determination of human CO2 generation rate based on measuring of time evolution of indoor CO2 concentration. The method is applied to 5 rooms of an educational building from Bialystok (Poland). Similar carbon dioxide gains were obtained in all rooms, around 0.0046 L/s, which correspond to theoretical CO2 generation rates of a sedentary activity for persons, males and females, between 21–30 years old, characteristics of occupants of analyzed rooms.

A solar collector market is most European countries is at the stage of continuous development, however its expansion rate differs. It shows that much more factors than only the local solar radiation is important, including a technology progress, costs, local manufactures’ engagement, an economic government support or an environmentally consciousness raising relevant to a mitigating climate change. We conducted the analysis for a public office building, with a few toilets and a social room, used by 54 people. As a primary heat source for HVAC and DHW systems an oil boiler was used, whereas solar collectors were considered as an energy source for hot water preparation. The analysis was conducted for three locations of the building: Bialystok (Poland), Cordoba (Spain) and Kaunas (Lithuania), using a simulation software delivered within the framework of VIPSKILLS project. Theoretical hot water consumption was considered as 3–7 dm3/(day person) in compliance with national recommendations. It was found that beam solar radiation share in a total radiation balance was nearly twice higher in Cordoba than in Bialystok or Kaunas. The highest efficiency (44%) was estimated in Cordoba for solar collectors installed with the tilt angle between 45–50°. In case of Bialystok and Kaunas the efficiency was lower than in Cordoba and nearly equal 40–41% and the recommended tilt angle was in a range 30– 45°.

The spectroscopic method for gas temperature determination in argon non-thermal plasmas sustained at atmospheric pressure proposed recently by Spectrochimica Acta Part B 129 14 (2017)—based on collisional broadening measurements of selected pairs of argon atomic lines, has been applied to other pairs of argon atomic lines, and the discrepancies found in some of these results have been analyzed. For validation purposes, the values of the gas temperature obtained using the different pairs of lines have been compared with the rotational temperatures derived from the OH ro-vibrational bands, using the Boltzmann-plot technique.

The degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution as a model dye using a non thermal microwave (2.45 GHz) plasma jet at atmospheric pressure has been investigated. Argon has been used as feed gas and aqueous solutions with different concentrations of the dye were treated using the effluent from plasma jet in a remote exposure. The removal efficiency increased as the dye concentration decreased from 250 to 5 ppm. Methylene blue degrades after different treatment times, depending on the experimental plasma conditions. Thus, kinetic constants up to 0.177 min−1 were obtained. The higher the Ar flow, the faster the degradation rate. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used to gather information about the species present in the gas phase, specifically excited argon atoms. Argon excited species and hydrogen peroxide play an important role in the degradation of the dye. In fact, the conversion of methylene blue was directly related to the density of argon excited species in the gas phase and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the aqueous liquid phase. Values of energy yield at 50% dye conversion of 0.296 g/kWh were achieved. Also, the use of two plasma applicators in parallel has been proven to improve energy efficiency.
