In this study, bauxite residue was directly leached using the Brønsted acidic ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate. Stirring rate, retention time, temperature, and pulp density have been studied in detail as the parameters that affect the leaching process. Their optimized combination has shown high recovery yields of Sc, nearly 80%, and Ti (90%), almost total dissolution of Fe, while Al and Na were partially extracted in the range of 30–40%. Si and rare earth element (REEs) dissolutions were found to be negligible, whereas Ca was dissolved and reprecipitated as CaSO4. The solid residue after leaching was fully characterized, providing explanations for the destiny of REEs that remain undissolved during the leaching process. The solid residue produced after dissolution can be further treated to extract REEs, while the leachate can be subjected to metal recovery processes (i.e., liquid–liquid extraction) to extract metals and regenerate ionic liquid.

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation by environmental agents and microbial metabolites is potentially implicated in a series of skin diseases. Hence, it would be very important to identify natural compounds that could inhibit the AhR activation by ligands of microbial origin as 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ), indirubin (IND) and pityriazepin (PZ) or the prototype ligand 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Five different dry Rosmarinus officinalis L. extracts (ROEs) were assayed for their activities as antagonists of AhR ligand binding with guinea pig cytosol in the presence of [3H]TCDD. The methanolic ROE was further assayed towards CYP1A1 mRNA induction using RT-PCR in human keratinocytes against TCDD, FICZ, PZ, and IND. The isolated metabolites, carnosic acid, carnosol, 7-O-methyl-epi-rosmanol, 4′,7-O-dimethylapigenin, and betulinic acid, were assayed for their agonist and antagonist activity in the presence and absence of TCDD using the gel retardation assay (GRA). All assayed ROE extracts showed similar dose-dependent activities with almost complete inhibition of AhR activation by TCDD at 100 ppm. The methanol ROE at 10 ppm showed 99%, 50%, 90%, and 85% inhibition against TCDD, FICZ, IND, and PZ, respectively, in human keratinocytes. Most assayed metabolites exhibited dose-dependent antagonist activity. ROEs inhibit AhR activation by TCDD and by the Malassezia metabolites FICZ, PZ, and IND. Hence, ROE could be useful for the prevention or treatment of skin diseases mediated by activation of AhR.

(E)-1-(4-Ethoxycarbonylphenyl)-5-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-(3,4-dimethoxystyryl)-2-pyrazoline was synthesized via the cyclization reaction between the monocarbonyl curcuminoid (2E,6E)-2,6-bis(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)acetone and ethyl hydrazinobenzoate in high yield and purity (>95% by High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)). The compound has been fully characterized by 1H, 13C NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis and HRMS and its activity was evaluated in terms of its potential interaction with DNA as well as its cytotoxicity against resistant and non-resistant tumor cells. Both DNA thermal denaturation and DNA viscosity measurements revealed that a significant intercalation binding takes place upon treatment of the DNA with the synthesized pyrazoline, causing an increase in melting temperature by 3.53 ± 0.11 °C and considerable DNA lengthening and viscosity increase. However, neither re-sensitisation of Doxorubicin (DO X)-resistant breast cancer and multidrug resistance (MDR) reversal nor synergistic activity with DOX by potentially increasing the DOX cell killing ability was observed.

Lanthanides have seen rapid growth in the pharmaceutical and biomedical field, thus necessitating the development of hybrid metal–organic materials capable of exerting defined biological activities. Ternary hybrid lanthanide compounds were synthesized through reaction systems of Ln(III) (Ln = La, Nd, Eu) involving the antioxidant flavonoid chrysin (Chr) and 1,10-phenanhtroline (phen) under solvothermal conditions, thus leading to pure crystalline materials. The so-derived compounds were characterized physicochemically in the solid state through analytical (elemental analysis), spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-visible, luminescence, ESI-MS, circular dichroism, 151Eu Mössbauer), magnetic susceptibility, and X-ray crystallographic techniques. The analytical and spectroscopic data corroborate the 3D structure of the mononuclear complex assemblies and are in line with theoretical calculations (Bond Valence Sum and Hirshfeld analysis), with their luminescence suggesting quenching on the flavonoid-phen electronic signature. Magnetic susceptibility data suggest potential correlations, which could be envisioned, supporting future functional sensors. At the biological level, the title compounds were investigated for their (a) ability to interact with bovine serum albumin and (b) antibacterial efficacy against Gram(−) (E. coli) and Gram(+) (S. aureus) bacteria, collectively revealing distinctly configured biological profiles and suggesting analogous applications in cellular (patho)physiologies.

The objective of this study was the optimization of the extraction process and the qualitative and quantitative determination of the bioactive metabolites: 12-O-methylcarnosic acid (12MCA), carnosic acid (CA), carnosol (CS), 7-O-methyl-epi-rosmanol (7MER) and rosmanol (RO) in infusions, decoctions, turbulent flow extracts, tinctures and oleolites from three Salvia species: Salvia officinalis L. (common sage, SO), Salvia fruticosa Mill. (Greek sage, SF) and Salvia rosmarinus Spenn (syn Rosmarinus officinalis L.) (rosemary, SR), using Quantitative Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-qNMR). Regarding the aqueous extracts, decoctions appeared to be richer sources of the studied metabolites than infusions among the three plants. For SR, the turbulent flow extraction under heating was the most efficient one. The optimum time for the preparation of decoctions was found to be 5 min for SF and SO and 15 min for SR. It is noteworthy that SR tinctures were not stable in time due to decomposition of the abietane-type diterpenes CA and CS because of the polar solvent used for their preparation. Contrary to this finding, the oleolites of SR appeared to be very stable. Olive oil as a solvent for extraction was very protective for the contained abietane-type diterpenes. A preliminary stability study on the effect of the storage time of the SF on the abietane-type diterpenes content showed that the total quantity of abietanes decreased by 16.51% and 40.79% after 12 and 36 months, respectively. The results of this investigation also demonstrated that 1H-qNMR is very useful for the analysis of sensitive metabolites, like abietane-type diterpenes, that can be influenced by solvents used in chromatographic analysis.

The reaction of the Schiff base ligand o-OH-C6H4-CH=N-C(CH2OH)3, H4L, with Ni(O2CMe)2∙4H2O and lanthanide nitrate salts in a 4:2:1 ratio lead to the formation of the trinuclear complexes [Ni2Ln(H3L)4(O2CMe)2](NO3) (Ln = Dy (1), Ho (2), and Y (3)) which crystallize in the non-centrosymmetric space group Pna21. The complex cation consists of the three metal ions in an almost linear arrangement. The {Ni2Ln} moieties are bridged through two deprotonated Ophenolato groups from two different ligands. Each terminal NiII ion is bound to two ligands through their Ophenolato, the Nimino atoms and one of the protonated Oalkoxo groups in a distorted octahedral. The central lanthanide ion is coordinated to four Ophenolato oxygen from the four ligands, and four Ocarboxylato atoms from two acetates which are bound in the bidentate chelate mode, and the coordination polyhedron is biaugmented trigonal prism, which probably results in a non-centrosymmetric arrangement of the complexes in the lattice. The magnetic properties of 1–3 were studied and showed that 1 exhibits field induced slow magnetic relaxation.
