The boundary extraction of an object from remote sensing imagery has been an important issue in the field of research. The automation of farmland boundary extraction is particularly in demand for rapid updates of the digital farm maps in Korea. This study aimed to develop a boundary extraction algorithm by systematically reconstructing a series of computational and mathematical methods, including the Suzuki85 algorithm, Canny edge detection, and Hough transform. Since most irregular farmlands in Korea have been consolidated into large rectangular arrangements for agricultural productivity, the boundary between two adjacent land parcels was assumed to be a straight line. The developed algorithm was applied over six different study sites to evaluate its performance at the boundary level and sectional area level. The correctness, completeness, and quality of the extracted boundaries were approximately 80.7%, 79.7%, and 67.0%, at the boundary level, and 89.7%, 90.0%, and 81.6%, at the area-based level, respectively. These performances are comparable with the results of previous studies on similar subjects; thus, this algorithm can be used for land parcel boundary extraction. The developed algorithm tended to subdivide land parcels for distinctive features, such as greenhouse structures or isolated irregular land parcels within the land blocks. The developed algorithm is currently applicable only to regularly arranged land parcels, and further study coupled with a decision tree or artificial intelligence may allow for boundary extraction from irregularly shaped land parcels.

Three watersheds in Korea (Dochoncheon, Gongjicheon, Seolseongcheon) with different land cover characteristics were selected for non-point source pollution monitoring. Event mean concentration (EMC) was calculated, and runoff characteristics were compared through first-flushing and statistical analyses. The mean of the water quality parameters was the highest in Seolseongcheon during dry days among the three watersheds. EMCs of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total nitrogen (TN) were higher in Dochoncheon and Gongjicheon during rainy days, respectively. The upper Seolseongchun watershed showed overall greater values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), total organic carbon (TOC), and total phosphorus (TP). First-flush analyses indicated that SS had the strongest and TN had the weakest effects on the first flush. BOD was the highest in Dochoncheon (urban watershed) and increased with increased number of antecedent dry days. Rainfall intensity appeared to affect SS runoff strongly in Gongjicheon and Seolseongcheon. COD showed strong correlation with SS and TOC in all watersheds, and organic matter (COD and TOC) demonstrated high factor loads during dry and rainy days. Thus, organic matter–related factors were classified as the major factors in pollutant loads. TP and TN were separately classified during dry days in Gongjicheon and Seolseongcheon, whereas these were the secondary factors during rainfall when the influence of non-point pollution was substantial. Cluster analyses showed that the monitoring sites in Dochoncheon and Gongjicheon watersheds were closer than Seolseongcheon. As a result of the comparison of non-point source pollution runoff in the three watersheds, it was difficult to explain the non-point source pollution runoff by specific characteristics such as land cover. For science-based management of non-point pollution, it is necessary to obtain additional survey data considering the climatic, geographical and major industries.

The benefits of using reinforcing fibers in latex-modified rapid-set cement preplaced concrete for emergency pavement repairs were examined in terms of strength, permeability, and durability as functions of the type of fiber. Single-type fibers, including jute, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and nylon fibers, as well as hybrid fiber mixtures prepared with two of the aforementioned fibers at a 1:1 weight ratio, were evaluated. Fibers were incorporated into the concrete mixture at 1.2 kg/m3. A vibratory press compactor that simulates roller compaction was used to increase compaction and densification of the resulting pavement repair material. The hybrid fiber-reinforced latex-modified rapid-set cement preplaced concrete (HFLMC) was manufactured to satisfy the criteria for opening traffic, i.e., compressive strength of 21 MPa or higher, and flexural strength of 3.5 MPa or higher after 4 h. Pavement requiring repair was removed and replaced with coarse aggregate. The rapid-set binder, fibers, and latex were then mixed and placed onto the coarse aggregate layer. The repair was considered complete after compaction. The resulting HFLMC satisfied all of the test criteria. Furthermore, concretes made with hybrid fibers were more mechanically sound than those made with a single fiber variety. Hybrid fiber concretes made with PVA and nylon fibers exhibited the best properties for emergency pavement repair. These results indicate that HFLMC is suitable for emergency pavement repair.

Drought has been frequently occurring in South Korea due to climate change. Analyzing the water supply capacity of the water resource system provides essential information for water resource management. This study evaluates the future water supply capacity of the Gwanghye (GH) agricultural reservoir based on the representative concentration pathways 4.5 and 8.5 climate change scenarios. We performed a reservoir simulation by reflecting the full water level of the reservoir before and after reservoir heightening. Climate change is expected to decrease the GH reservoir’s future available water resources due to the overall reduction in the reservoir’s runoff. After the reservoir-heightening project, an overall improvement was observed in the stability of the future irrigation water supply. Moreover, the remaining water after the supply of the irrigation water could supply 0.6–7.2 × 103 m3 of daily instream water. Thus, flexible reservoir operations are necessary according to climate change scenarios and the reservoir operation period. The use of climate change information should be expanded to establish reasonable water management policies for future climate change scenarios.

This study evaluated the effects of adding waste PET fibers on the mechanical properties and chloride ion penetration of latex-modified ultra-rapid hardening cement concrete used for emergency road pavement repairs. The primary experimental variable was the content of waste PET fibers. The mechanical properties of the concrete were evaluated through compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strength tests. Its durability was evaluated through chloride ion penetration, surface resistivity, and abrasion resistance tests. The experimental results were compared with the quality standards for emergency repair concrete set by the Korea Expressway Corporation. As a result, this study has enhanced the strength and resistance to chloride ions of latex-modified concrete by incorporating waste PET fibers. In the mixture with 3.84 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers, the compressive strength was 29.9 MPa at 4 h and 42.5 MPa at 28 curing days. The flexural strength was 6.0 MPa at 4 curing hours and 7.0 MPa at 28 days, and the splitting tensile strength was 4.5 MPa at 28 days of curing. The chloride ion permeability amount and abrasion depth were 1081C and 0.82 mm, respectively. The mixture with 3.84 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers has superior compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, chloride ion penetration, and surface resistivity compared to the mixture with 7.68 kg/m3. This result means that the waste PET fibers caused poor dispersion and fiber-balling within the concrete, leading to loose internal void structures when incorporated at 3.84 kg/m3. However, the abrasion resistance test showed better results for the mixture with 7.68 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers than the 3.84 kg/m3 mixture. Therefore, the test results indicated that 3.84 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers is the most effective for latex-modified concrete used in emergency road pavement repairs.

Spatiotemporal water quality tendencies before and after total maximum daily load (TMDL) implementation in the Hangang basin were analyzed to determine the water quality improvement resulting from the TMDL policy. The periodicities of water quality indicators were also analyzed and water quality characteristics corresponding to different unit watershed units were identified in terms of pollution source. Considering five water quality indicators, including biochemical oxygen demand and total phosphorus, it was observed that water quality indicator concentrations were low in the upstream areas of the Bukhangang and Namhangang watersheds. However, they were high between the downstream areas of the Namhangang watershed and the Imjingang watershed and in the Hangang downstream and Jinwicheon watersheds. Additionally, the concentrations of water quality indicators in most of the unit watersheds where TMDL had been implemented decreased after TMDL implementation. However, increasing tendencies in the concentrations of water quality indicators continued to be observed in some of the watershed units in the upstream areas of the Bukhangang and Namhangang watersheds, possibly because these watersheds are affected by nonpoint source pollution owing to rainfall. Therefore, in the future, it would be necessary to implement policies that take these findings into consideration.
