A new multi-carrier M-ary differential chaos shift keying system with code index modulation, referred to as CIMMC-M-DCSK, is proposed in this paper. In the proposed CIMMC-M-DCSK system, the reference and information-bearing signals for each subcarrier can be transmitted simultaneously by using the orthogonal sinusoidal carriers, where the information-bearing signal adopts the M-DCSK modulation to further increase the data rate. With an aim to making full use of the system energy resources, the reference signals in all subcarriers are coded by a Walsh code to carry additional information bits. The analytical bit-error-rate (BER) expressions of the proposed CIMMC-M-DCSK system are derived over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) as well as multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, a noise-reduction scheme and a hierarchical-modulation scheme are designed for the proposed system. In particular, the former scheme can significantly improve the BER performance while the latter scheme can provide different quality of service (QoS) for the transmitted bits according to their different levels of importance. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analytical expressions and the superiority of the proposed systems.

In the Internet of Health Things (IoHT)-based e-Health paradigm, a large number of computational-intensive tasks have to be offloaded from resource-limited IoHT devices to proximal powerful edge servers to reduce latency and improve energy efficiency. However, the lack of global state information (GSI), the adversarial competition among multiple IoHT devices, and the ultra reliable and low latency communication (URLLC) constraints have imposed new challenges for task offloading optimization. In this paper, we formulate the task offloading problem as an adversarial multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem. In addition to the average-based performance metrics, bound violation probability, occurrence probability of extreme events, and statistical properties of excess values are employed to characterize URLLC constraints. Then, we propose a URLLC-aware Task Offloading scheme based on the exponential-weight algorithm for exploration and exploitation (EXP3) named UTO-EXP3. URLLC awareness is achieved by dynamically balancing the URLLC constraint deficits and energy consumption through online learning. We provide a rigorous theoretical analysis to show that guaranteed performance with a bounded deviation can be achieved by UTO-EXP3 based on only local information. Finally, the effectiveness and reliability of UTO-EXP3 are validated through simulation results.

The goal of this work is to propose an energy-efficient algorithm for dynamic computation offloading, in a multi-access edge computing scenario, where multiple mobile users compete for a common pool of radio and computational resources. We focus on delay-critical applications, incorporating an upper bound on the probability that the overall time required to send the data and process them exceeds a prescribed value. In a dynamic setting, the above constraint translates into preventing the sum of the communication and computation queues' lengths from exceeding a given value. Ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) are also taken into account using finite blocklengths and reliability constraints. The proposed algorithm, based on stochastic optimization, strikes an optimal balance between the service delay and the energy spent at the mobile device, while guaranteeing a target out-of-service probability. Starting from a long-term average optimization problem, our algorithm is based on the solution of a convex problem in each time slot, which is provided with a very fast iterative strategy. Finally, we extend the approach to mobile devices having energy harvesting capabilities, typical of Internet of Things scenarios, thus devising an energy efficient dynamic offloading strategy that stabilizes the battery level of each device around a prescribed operating level.

With the surge in smartphone sensing, wireless networking, and mobile social networking techniques, mobile crowdsensing (MCS) has become a promising paradigm for 5G networks. An MCS system's service quality heavily depends on the platform, which brings the users under a common cloud with very low delay. Therefore, MCS needs a new platform that brings the best not only from the user's perspective, but also from the operator's perspective. In this article, we propose a novel architecture for MCS by combining two technologies, those being C-RAN and D2D. C-RAN is a promising enabling technology that can at the same time cope with the ever increasing mobile traffic demand and reduce the surging costs experienced by service operators. In spite of the many advantages offered by C-RAN, one of the main concerns for operators is its associated fronthaul delay. To handle such delay, we come across this D2D solution in C-RAN networks. D2D is adopted as an effective candidate for very low delay between links and has already provided evidence of its potential for novel business opportunities. This article shows, together with standardization aspects, how combining C-RAN and D2D technologies can help to solve the delay issue and fulfill most of the targets specified for 5G networks in terms of delay, capacity, energy efficiency, mobility, and cost.

Age of information (AoI) is an important metric of information timeliness, which determines digital twin (DT) consistency and energy management precision. However, AoI guarantee in the time-averaged sense is unreliable to avoid the occurrence of extreme event. In this paper, we propose a novel information timeliness metric named ultra-low AoI (ULAoI). Compared with AoI, ULAoI further considers the occurrence of extreme event and higher-order statistical characteristics of excess AoI value. Multi-dimensional resources of power internet of things (PIoT) are jointly allocated to achieve ULAoI guarantee from the perspective of sensing-communication-control integration. ULAoI-DT-Prioritized deep Q network (DQN) is proposed to achieve coordinated resource allocation by approximating unobservable information with the assistance of ULAoI-DT, and preventing DQN training from using samples with large AoI based on ULAoI-induced priority. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm in global loss function, ULAoI guarantee, and energy management optimality.
