Crop residue open burning is a major source of atmospheric pollutants that degrade regional air quality, enhance climate forcing, and threaten public health through emissions of particulate matter, greenhouse gases, and toxic species. In southern China, satellite-based emission estimates are often underestimated because frequent cloud cover and limited spatiotemporal resolution hinder the detection of agricultural fires. In this study, crop residue open burning emissions in Guangxi province from 2017 to 2023 were quantified using a statistical approach. The open burning proportion (OBP) was updated on an annual basis using the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) 375 m active fire product (VNP14IMG), and recently reported emission factors (EFS) were adopted to enhance estimation accuracy. Annual emissions of pollutants were then spatially distributed to 0.05° × 0.05° grid cells based on satellite-detected fire counts and land cover information. The results indicated the total emissions of black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitric oxide (NOX), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), fine particles (PM2.5), coarse particles (PM10), ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4) and non-methane volatile organic compound (NMVOC) in Guangxi province during 2017–2023 were 58.90, 230.48, 37.90, 213.95, 4234.41, 108,775.48, 583.09, 667.70, 46.36, 322.74 and 710.20 Gg, respectively. Sugarcane residue burning was identified as the dominant contributor, accounting for 41.26–64.38% of total emissions, followed by rice (20.66–43.06%), corn (5.11–17.25%), and cassava (4.33–6.45%). Emissions exhibited clear interannual variability, declining from 2017 to 2020 under strict control measures and increasing again from 2021 to 2023 as enforcement weakened. Incorporating annually updated VIIRS-derived OBPS into the statistical inventory improves the temporal representation and reliability of multi-year emission estimates for agricultural burning.

Citrus, as a globally important economic crop, requires accurate assessment of premium fruit production potential for precise orchard management and enhanced economic benefits. This study develops a method for assessing the production potential of premium citrus using UAV-based multispectral imagery and ground data. Taking citrus orchards in Wuming District, Guangxi, China, as the experimental area, this study investigates techniques for assessing the production potential of premium fruit at the canopy scale of citrus trees in southern hilly regions, aiming to rapidly predict the quality production potential of citrus before fruit ripening. The methodology involved the following: (1) Segmenting the study area using a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and extracting individual tree canopies by integrating NDVI with a marker-controlled watershed algorithm. Canopy fruit boundaries were identified using the NPCI index. (2) Selecting key assessment indicators—NDVI, TCAVI, REOSAVI, canopy area, and canopy fruit area—through correlation analysis with nutritional quality metrics. (3) Establishing threshold levels for these indicators and constructing a production potential assessment model. Experimental results demonstrated an individual tree identification accuracy (precision) of 98.75%, a recall of 98.47%, and an F-score of 98.61%. Canopy area extraction achieved a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.869 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.489 m2. The overall accuracy for production potential assessment reached 85.11%. This study provides a new approach for using UAV multispectral technology to non-destructively assess the production potential of premium citrus in the hilly regions of southern China, offering technical support for precise orchard management.

Satellite precipitation products like GPM IMERG are crucial for hydrological modeling and disaster prevention; yet, their reliability in complex mountainous monsoon regions remains challenging. While the latest IMERG V07 introduces key upgrades, including a Climatological Calibration Algorithm (CCA), its cross-scale error propagation mechanisms and performance heterogeneity in complex underlying surfaces are poorly understood. This study evaluates the daily and monthly performance of IMERG V07 and V06 (Early, Late, and Final Runs) from 2014 to 2020 against 91 rain gauges in Guangxi, China—a typical mountainous monsoon region. The evaluation employs multiple statistical metrics and a multi-dimensional stratification approach based on elevation, precipitation intensity, and seasonality to quantify error propagation and climate-topography coupling effects. The results reveal that V07, particularly the Late Run, enhances daily precipitation detection capabilities, it significantly increases the proportion of systematic positive bias from 62.3 to 64.8% (V06) to 67.2–68.9% (V07). Consequently, upon temporal aggregation to the monthly scale, this systematic overestimation is severely amplified, leading to degraded performance, with the Final Run suffering the most substantial accuracy loss. Furthermore, retrieval accuracy is heavily constrained by surface heterogeneity, with systematic overestimation surging in areas where relatively dry (mean annual precipitation < 1300 mm) and complex terrain (elevation 100–500 m) coincide. The introduced CCA effectively improved dry season estimations but failed during wet season by introducing substantial positive biases. Ultimately, while V07 better captures short-term precipitation dynamics, its structural systematic biases compromise long-term cumulative reliability, highlighting the necessity for physics-based bias correction in hydrological applications and dynamic calibration in future algorithm upgrades.
