This paper proposes a complete and effective smart over-voltage monitoring and identification system. In recent years, smart grids are of the greatest interest in power system research. One of the main features of smart grid is their self-healing, which can continuously carry out online self-evaluation, discover existing faults, and correct them immediately. The over-voltage smart monitoring-identification-suppression systems play a key role in the construction of self-healing grids. In this paper, eight kinds of common over-voltage are discussed and analyzed. The S-transform algorithm is used to extract features of over-voltage. Aiming at the main features of each kind of over-voltage, six different characteristic quantities are proposed. A well designed fuzzy expert system and a support vector machine are employed as the classifiers to build a two-step identification model. The accuracy of the identification system is verified by field records. Results show that this system is feasible and promising for real applications.

A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) produces a homogenous discharge with low energy consumption, offering broad developmental prospects, and this discharge process is also the mechanism through which charges are transported. Higher reaction efficiency is achieved when more charges are transported. Focusing on the electrode configuration of the multineedle-to-cylinder (MC) system, i.e., the structure of needles arrayed on the inner coaxial rod, the effect of needle arrangement, including needle length (NL), inter axial needle distance (ID), and inter axial needle rotation angle (INRA), on the transported charge per cycle and discharge power in DBDs is investigated. The finite-element method (FEM) and quasi-static field simulation are adopted to study the active region (AR) where the electric field strength exceeds the breakdown electric field strength between MC electrodes because this region plays a dominant role in DBD. The improvement of its volume ratio in the reactor allows an increase in discharge power. The simulation results are in accordance with the experimental results, which illustrate that quasi-static field simulation is effective and reliable. Simulation results show that mutual effects of nearby needles and between needles and the inner rod exist. As a result, shorter ID (1.5 mm), needles with similar lengths (3.5 mm) are arranged, and an INRA of 0° is proven to be the optimal structure because it produces the highest AR volume ratio. The result is experimentally validated by transported charges per cycle and discharge power obtained through Lissajous figures.

Space charge injected into a liquid dielectric by an electrode under an impulse voltage causes the electric field to be distorted, which affects the dielectric's insulation performance. In this study, the authors study the surface modification of three‐electrode materials, namely aluminium, copper, and stainless steel, by sputtering of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) based on magnetron sputtering. The breakdown voltage of propylene carbonate and the surface morphology of the electrodes before and after modification were examined. Furthermore, the distribution of the space charge injected into the propylene carbonate from the different electrode materials was also measured based on the Kerr electro‐optic effect. These results indicate that the breakdown voltage of propylene carbonate increased by 7, 4, and 9% after surface modification of aluminium, copper, and stainless steel, respectively. After sputtering of TiO 2 , micro‐grooves on the surface of the three‐electrode materials became smooth, and the surface roughness decreased, which changed the barrier height of the solid–liquid interface. The space charge injection mode of the three‐electrode materials before and after surface modification was bipolar injection; however, the space charge injection amounts were markedly lower for the modified electrodes.

Rapid and accurate location of power distribution line faults is essential for power system reliability improvement. Based on the electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR), an improved expression of fault current considering the influence of both sides of the transverse branch in the reversed time was derived in this research. In the reversed time, the transient voltage signals were injected into both ends of the line and multiplied one signal by −1, as suggested in An et al. 's work, and an assumed impedance of the transverse branch was set to 1000 Ω. A new criterion of the mirrored minimum fault current signal energy was proposed to determine the fault location. In the direct time, by setting different ground fault impedances, the distribution of the fault current signal energy in the frequency domain was calculated. Furthermore, the time-domain simulation verification was performed in the power systems computer-aided design software. The results indicate that when the actual fault impedance was unknown, the accurate fault location of the distribution line can be achieved by the proposed EMTR-based method, and it is less affected by time synchronization.

During the process in which a vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) switches off the shunt reactor (SR), an overvoltage with high amplitude and high frequency (HF) will occur because of current chopping and multireignition. To reproduce this switching overvoltage faithfully, the voltage and current characteristics of the VCB were analyzed in this work, based on the field test data from a 220-kV substation in Chongqing, China. Then typical parameters of three basic factors mentioned in Helmer's VCB model, chopping current value, dielectric dynamic insulation strength and HF current quenching capability, were selected after statistical analysis and an arc reignition model of VCB was established. Based on this presented model, the influences of the surge arrester, the resistor-capacitor (RC) snubber and the installation positions and quantities of these protective devices on overvoltage suppression performance were studied in simulation. In addition, the field test using surge arrester and RC snubber as the suppression measures was performed again in the same substation. Finally, we derived the conclusion that the most suitable suppression scheme for overvoltage caused by VCB switching off 10-kV SR is installing two 12/32.4 kV surge arresters at the terminals of the cables for the SR and the substation transformer (ST).

The measurement of overvoltage in a power distribution network is the basis for detecting lightning-induced overvoltage. This paper proposes a lightning-induced overvoltage monitoring device using a ceramic capacitor insulator that is powered by the line and employs wireless transmission. The sensing principle of the monitoring device, the power-supply principle of ceramic capacitor voltage division, and power electronic switching device, as well as the principle of signal acquisition and wireless transmission are expounded. The power self-acquisition module can take out 2 W of power from a single line to meet the requirements of the monitoring device. The monitoring system was tested with a 10 kV test platform. The transient response characteristics, the power self-acquisition capability, and the linearity of the sensor were obtained. The overall performance of the monitoring device was also tested. The operation status of the monitoring device on the distribution line and the monitored overvoltage signal showed that the device can capture lightning-induced overvoltage signals and be used in a distribution network system.
