Sustainability in Cultural Heritage (CH) is a complex question that needs to be addressed by a group of experts tackling the different issues. In this light, the present work wishes to provide a multi-level analysis of the sustainability in CH, using as an example a recent European H2020 project (CrossCult) and the lessons learnt from its design, implementation and evaluation. The sustainability of CH has qualitatively changed over the last few years, under the developments in digital technology that seems to affect the very nature of the cultural experience. We discuss sustainability in venues using digital technologies, covering a span of needs of small/unknown and large/popular venues, which try to enhance the visitor experience, attract visitors, form venue networks, etc. Moreover, we explore issues of sustainability of digital content and its re usability through holistic design. Aspects of technology, human networks and data sustainability are also presented, and we conclude with the arguments concerning the sustainability of visitor reflection, the interpretation of social and historical phenomena and the creation of meaning.

We present the concept and early design of a crowd computing system that aims at involving people in the annotation of unread cuneiform tablets, in an attempt to (i) increase public awareness about the history of Ancient Mesopotamia and (ii) to supplement the shrinking force of experts in the subject with the contributions of interested individuals, who are instructed in reading from the simplest inscriptions towards more complex ones in a gamified strategy.

Bath constructions are today among other monuments one of the better preserved and studied monuments of the Roman Empire. Nevertheless, there remains a significant research gap as to the nature of water exploited within. The mineral-medicinal waters, in fact, conditioned not only the location, but also the function and, consequently, the architecture of these features. Hence, one of the main objectives of our current study is to highlight the main architectonic and functional characteristics of these bathing complexes. This paper thus advances a first distribution map specifically defining the spread of the better preserved and/or better documented spas using mineral-medicinal waters in the Roman Empire (henceforth referred to as healing or thermal spas/baths). This study also advances the current state of research on the question, some of the main characteristics of these types of complexes, as well as some of the drawbacks to their study.

Probably the most important Romanesque artwork in Spain, the Portal of Glory of Santiago de Compostela is essentially made in granite, the most abundant stone in the NW of Iberia, with the only exception of five marble pieces. Different hypothesis on the origin of these marbles have previously been proposed based on visual assessment or by directly assuming a local source. To shed light on their quarry provenance, a multi-analytical study was performed combining polarized-light optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence microscopy, XRPD, SEM-EDS and stable C and O isotopes. The comparison of the results with the available databases reveals the use of marbles from the Estremoz Anticline (Portugal) in the three exquisitely carved columns strategically placed in the central arcade, whereas the other two pieces are local marbles, illustrating a more complex consumption of this noble material than that initially expected.

Recent advances in semantic web and deep learning technologies enable new means for the computational analysis of vast amounts of information from the field of digital humanities. We discuss how some of the techniques can be used to identify historical and cultural symmetries between different characters, locations, events or venues, and how these can be harnessed to develop new strategies to promote intercultural and cross-border aspects that support the teaching and learning of history and heritage. The strategies have been put to the test in the context of the European project CrossCult, revealing enormous potential to encourage curiosity to discover new information and increase retention of learned information.

The Horizon 2020 project CrossCult aims to highlight historical and cultural associations between different characters, locations, events, venues, or artworks, to develop new strategies with which to promote intercultural and cross-border aspects of history and heritage. This paper presents a pilot app that provides graph-based visualizations of those associations, arranged by Humanities experts in relation to several reflective topics, and glued together by narratives that may present the same facts from diverse points of view. After querying a knowledge base that brings together several Linked Data resources, the associations are curated by the experts using a dedicated tool, to ensure that only meaningful associations appear on the mobile app. In turn, the app users can contribute new associations in the form of written text, which the experts can turn into new concepts and properties in the knowledge base. Here, we present the design of the mobile app and the experts’ tool, together with the results of early experiments aimed at assessing the instructional value of the proposal.

Cultural heritage is typically not on the people's top lists when searching for entertainment activities. Publicized temporary exhibitions can draw many visitors to a museum, urged by the opportunity of seeing certain items, but in general there are no particular stimuli and the visits are postponed once and again, if not forever. In this paper, we argue that it is possible to instigate curiosity in relation to dates, periods and events that are relevant to the potential visitors and connected to the cultural heritage items in direct or subtle ways. Likewise, proper reasoning about dates can improve the experiences of actual visitors, by promoting serendipitous learning, increasing retention and revealing that subsequent visits may drive them around the venue following new appealing narratives. We present the outline of a recommender system grounded on rich semantic modeling of relevant dates in the user profiles, in the cultural heritage knowledge bases and in an almanac of important days, connected to keywords and/or historical events and characters. We also explain how this system is going to be used in the pilot experiments of the CROSSCULT EU project, starting in September 2017.

Thermal waters have been used from ancient times. From those early experiences and the consecutive improvements in the understanding and treatment of these waters, all around the world different cultures and communities have used natural structures or have built facilities for the best use and exploitation of the mineral spring water. Nowadays thermal spas, inheritors of a rich and long tradition from the ancient world, combine classical techniques with innovative proposals. Thus, the introduction and implementation of new technologies in bathtubs, swimming pools, showers, saunas, etc., allow the efficient optimization of thermal techniques and hydrotherapy facilities. Moreover, the development of health tourism offers a new way to understand the use of thermal water, which requires higher quality and specialization of the spa services. Every year thousands of people travel to Europe for a healthy holiday and to improve their welfare and wellbeing. Resorts, spas, thalassotherapy centers and thermal spas that use hot thermal water utilize bath techniques, respiratory applications, pressure techniques, wraps, etc. These techniques use facilities and amenities such as swimming pools, bathtubs, showers, sprays and stoves, among others. One can also find peloids (thermal mud) and any kind of clay and herbal wraps. From the practices developed in Roman times, but especially from the first hydrotherapy techniques described by Priessnitz until today, there have been numerous innovations that have enabled the spas to adapt to the demands and needs of a new type of customer. Nowadays, there are companies specializing in the design and innovation of hydrotherapy that favour the modernization of existing spas or the emergence of new spas. The highlights are control and automation; new materials; design and architecture designed by prestigious architects.

In spite of the great leap forward experienced in our understanding of the use of marble and other ornamental stones in Roman Spain, provenance studies are still quite uncommon in some territories of the Iberian Peninsula. This was the case of the northwesternmost part (modern Galicia), where no significant work had been done until now. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary study, a significant number of objects studied did not match with the main well-known Classical marbles but seemed to have been produced with a local stone known as O Incio marble, which had never been yet archaeometrically analysed. Therefore, the quarries near the small village of O Incio were located and sampled, and a multi-method approach combining polarized-light microscopy, cathodoluminescence, X-ray powder diffraction and stable C and O isotope analysis as well as spectrophotometry was applied to characterize the different outcropping marble varieties as the first and basic step to correctly differentiate them from other Iberian and foreign marbles with similar macroscopic features.

In this paper we present a new study about the Amiadoso plaque (Allariz, Ourense) has been developed, in which this Roman object has been analysed from an interdisciplinary point of view based in the combination of stylistic and archaeometric studies of its material. Consequently, we have linked up the analysis of the different artistic phases of this piece from a formal study with the identification of the marble used, which confirms a local provenance (O Incio area). These new data provide essential information, given the exceptional nature of this object, to recognize aspects related to technical quality of local workshops and consequently about social, economic and political implications of this type of productions in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

Very close to the Roman city of Lugo, on the banks of the river Miño, the city’s modern Thermal Spa is home to one of the most singular and well-preserved Roman buildings of Lucus Augusti. The existence of mineral-thermal waters in this location and the specific architecture of their Roman structures emphasize the need to reconsider the archaeological and historical remains, and consequently their interpretation, in accordance with the singular characteristics of this kind of health spa complex in the Roman Age.

AbstractThe existence of Roman baths in which mineral-medicinal waters were used is a well-known reality around the Roman Empire. Nevertheless, these establishments are usually described in bibliography in the same way as Roman spas using common water in spite of their substantial differences related to their health and religious meanings. In order to improve our knowledge on this subject, it is necessary to review the architecture and organization of these healing spas. As a first step, this research undertakes the study of the best known Roman buildings of Hispania allowing us to compare them with other areas of the Western Roman Empire. Keywords: thermal water, architecture, Hispania, healing spas, Roman age.
