Remote sensing image scene classification has been widely applied and has attracted increasing attention. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved remarkable results in scene classification. However, scene images have complex semantic relationships between multi-scale ground objects, and the traditional stacked network structure lacks the ability to extract multi-scale and key features, resulting in limited feature representation capabilities. By simulating the way that humans understand and perceive images, attention mechanisms can be beneficial for quickly and accurately acquiring key features. In our study, we propose a channel-attention-based DenseNet (CAD) network for scene classification. Firstly, the lightweight DenseNet121 is selected as the backbone for the spatial relationship between multi-scale ground objects. In the spatial domain, densely connected CNN layers can extract spatial features at multiple scales and correlate with each other. Secondly, in the channel domain, a channel attention mechanism is introduced to strengthen the weights of the important feature channels adaptively and to suppress the secondary feature channels. Thirdly, the cross-entropy loss function based on label smoothing is used to reduce the impact of inter-class similarity upon feature representations. The proposed CAD network is evaluated on three public datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the CAD network can achieve performance comparable to those of other state-of-the-art methods. The visualization through the Grad-CAM ++ algorithm also reflects the effectiveness of channel attention and the powerful feature representation capabilities of the CAD network.

High-resolution remote sensing (HRRS) image scene classification has attracted an enormous amount of attention due to its wide application in a range of tasks. Due to the rapid development of deep learning (DL), models based on convolutional neural network (CNN) have made competitive achievements on HRRS image scene classification because of the excellent representation capacity of DL. The scene labels of HRRS images extremely depend on the combination of global information and information from key regions or locations. However, most existing models based on CNN tend only to represent the global features of images or overstate local information capturing from key regions or locations, which may confuse different categories. To address this issue, a key region or location capturing method called key filter bank (KFB) is proposed in this article, and KFB can retain global information at the same time. This method can combine with different CNN models to improve the performance of HRRS imagery scene classification. Moreover, for the convenience of practical tasks, an end-to-end model called KFBNet where KFB combined with DenseNet-121 is proposed to compare the performance with existing models. This model is evaluated on public benchmark data sets, and the proposed model makes better performance on benchmarks than the state-of-the-art methods.

Smart management of urban space is an important way to achieve the goal of sustainable urban development. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely used in urban space management work and have greatly improved the level of it. UAV technology assisting urban space management involves many technical details and has generated a number of problems. Therefore, a systematic review of the applications of UAVs in urban spatial management work is very necessary and can provide a comprehensive reference for relevant researchers. This is conducive to the generation of more new insights, methods, and applications. However, according to our research, there is a lack of relevant systematic investigation. We screened and researched a large number of relevant literatures (about 230) with the help of search tools such as Web of Science and IEEE Explore, and combined with our own working experience to review and summarize the field in an all-round way. Taking the definition, needs, and challenges of urban spatial management as an entry point, this paper systematically summarizes the task flow, working paradigm, technical system, and application direction of UAV-assisted urban spatial management. It also takes our recently developed UAV urban management system as an example to provide an introduction on how to integrate advanced technologies such as UAV and artificial intelligence. Finally, this paper summarizes several concluding findings and proposes several future research directions. The research in this paper shows that UAV technology has already played a great role in urban spatial management work, but it is still far from realizing automation and intelligence, and it needs to continue to make efforts in terms of methods, systems, applications, and policies. In order to achieve these goals, UAV technology can be further integrated with advanced technologies such as deep learning, more types of UAV industry applications can be carried out, more functional UAS can be developed, and better management policies can be formulated.

Due to the trade-off of temporal resolution and spatial resolution, spatiotemporal image-fusion uses existing high-spatial-low-temporal (HSLT) and high-temporal-low-spatial (HTLS) images as prior knowledge to reconstruct high-temporal-high-spatial (HTHS) images. However, some existing spatiotemporal image-fusion algorithms ignore the issue that the spatial information of HTLS images is insufficient to support the acquisition of spatial information, which leads to the unsatisfactory accuracy of the fusion result. To introduce more spatial information, the algorithm in this article uses Cycle-generative adversarial networks (GANs) to simulate the change process of two HSLT images at k-1 and k+1, and to generate some simulated images between k-1 and k+1. Then, the generated images are selected under the help of HTLS images, and the selected ones are then enhanced with wavelet transform. Finally, the image with spatial information is introduced into the Flexible Spatiotemporal DAta Fusion (FSDAF) framework to improve the performance of spatiotemporal image-fusion. Extensive experiments on two real data sets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms current state-of-the-art spatiotemporal image-fusion methods.

Geological remote sensing interpretation can extract elements of interest from multiple types of images, which is vital in geological survey and mapping, especially in inaccessible regions. However, due to numerous classes, high interclass similarities, complex distributions, and sample imbalances of geological elements, the interpretation results of machine learning (ML)-based methods are understandably worse than manual visual interpretation. In addition, scholars in remote sensing have mainly carried out their works to interpret a single geological element category, such as mineral, lithological, soil, and structure. The interpretation of multiple geological elements is missing, which is more in line with the open world. To improve the interpretation results of ML-based methods and reduce the labor cost in geological survey and mapping, we propose a deep learning (DL)-feature-based adaptive multisource data fusion network (AMSDFNet) for the efficient interpretation of multiple geological remote sensing elements. The AMSDFNet has two branches for learning valuable spatial and spectral information from two kinds of data sources, in which the atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) operation and an attention block are applied to adaptively extract and fuse multiscale informative features. A hard example mining algorithm was also added to select important training examples to address sample imbalance. A large-scale region in western China with sufficient geological elements was set as the research area. The proposed model improved the two critical metrics by about 2% in the experiment section. As far as we know, this research work is the first time DL features and multisource remote sensing images have been utilized to simultaneously interpret geological elements of lithology, soil, surface water, and glaciers. The extensive experimental results demonstrated the superiority of DL features and our model in geological remote sensing interpretation.
