The Internet of Things (IoT) is the global network of interrelated physical devices such as sensors, actuators, smart applications, objects, computing devices, mechanical machines, and people that are becoming an essential part of the internet. In an industrial environment, these devices are the source of data which provide abundant information in manufacturing processes. Nevertheless, the massive, heterogeneous, and time-sensitive nature of the data brings substantial challenges to the real-time collection, processing, and decision making. Therefore, this paper presents a framework of an IoT-based Industrial Data Management System (IDMS) which can manage the huge industrial data, support online monitoring, and control smart manufacturing. The framework contains five basic layers such as physical, network, middleware, database, and application layers to provide a service-oriented architecture for the end users. Experimental results from a smart factory case study demonstrate that the framework can manage the regular data and urgent events generated from various factory devices in the distributed industrial environment through state-of-the-art communication protocols. The collected data is converted into useful information which improves productivity and the prognosis of production lines.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence have achieved a human-level performance in many application domains, including image classification, speech recognition and machine translation. However, in the financial domain expert-based credit risk models have still been dominating. Establishing meaningful benchmark and comparisons on machine-learning approaches and human expert-based models is a prerequisite in further introducing novel methods. Therefore, our main goal in this study is to establish a new benchmark using real consumer data and to provide machine-learning approaches that can serve as a baseline on this benchmark. We performed an extensive comparison between the machine-learning approaches and a human expert-based model—FICO credit scoring system—by using a Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) data. As the SCF data is non-synthetic and consists of a large number of real variables, we applied two variable-selection methods: the first method used hypothesis tests, correlation and random forest-based feature importance measures and the second method was only a random forest-based new approach (NAP), to select the best representative features for effective modelling and to compare them. We then built regression models based on various machine-learning algorithms ranging from logistic regression and support vector machines to an ensemble of gradient boosted trees and deep neural networks. Our results demonstrated that if lending institutions in the 2001s had used their own credit scoring model constructed by machine-learning methods explored in this study, their expected credit losses would have been lower, and they would be more sustainable. In addition, the deep neural networks and XGBoost algorithms trained on the subset selected by NAP achieve the highest area under the curve (AUC) and accuracy, respectively.

Objective: Some researchers have studied about early prediction and diagnosis of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), but their accuracies were not high. Therefore, this paper proposes a soft voting ensemble classifier (SVE) using machine learning (ML) algorithms. Methods: We used the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry dataset and selected 11,189 subjects among 13,104 with the 2-year follow-up. It was subdivided into two groups (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction NSTEMI), and then subdivided into training (70%) and test dataset (30%). Third, we selected the ranges of hyper-parameters to find the best prediction model from random forest (RF), extra tree (ET), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and SVE. We generated each ML-based model with the best hyper-parameters, evaluated by 5-fold stratified cross-validation, and then verified by test dataset. Lastly, we compared the performance in the area under the ROC curve (AUC), accuracy, precision, recall, and F-score. Results: The accuracies for RF, ET, GBM, and SVE were (88.85%, 88.94%, 87.84%, 90.93%) for complete dataset, (84.81%, 85.00%, 83.70%, 89.07%) STEMI, (88.81%, 88.05%, 91.23%, 91.38%) NSTEMI. The AUC values in RF were (98.96%, 98.15%, 98.81%), ET (99.54%, 99.02%, 99.00%), GBM (98.92%, 99.33%, 99.41%), and SVE (99.61%, 99.49%, 99.42%) for complete dataset, STEMI, and NSTEMI, respectively. Consequently, the accuracy and AUC in SVE outperformed other ML models. Conclusions: The performance of our SVE was significantly higher than other machine learning models (RF, ET, GBM) and its major prognostic factors were different. This paper will lead to the development of early risk prediction and diagnosis tool of MACE in ACS patients.

The major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) often occur with high morbidity and mortality globally. It is very important to predict the MACE occurrences accurately in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Therefore, this paper proposes a stacking ensemble model for the prediction of MACE occurrences in patients with ACS at early stage. Our research contents are summarized as follows. First, we use the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry National Institutes of Health (KAMIR-NIH) dataset, and our experimental data are extracted from the raw data and preprocessed. Second, we apply three data sampling approaches, such as borderline synthetic minority oversampling technique (Borderline-SMOTE1), cluster centroids undersampling, and synthetic minority oversampling techniques (SMOTE) plus Tomek Links (SMOTETomek) hybrid technique, to solve the class imbalance problem. Third, to develop a stacking ensemble prediction model for the occurrences of MACE, we apply seven widely used machine learning algorithms, such as logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), as base learners. Fourth, the performance of the proposed stacking ensemble model is compared with the seven base learners using the three data sampling techniques. In the result, the proposed stacking ensemble model with the SMOTETomek shows the best performance with accuracy of 0.9862, precision 0.9976, recall 0.975, F1-score 0.9862, g-mean 0.9863, and AUC 0.9863 and provided a better solution for imbalanced dataset. Consequently, our finding is that the proposed stacking ensemble model with the SMOTETomek outperforms the base learners and improves the accuracy of diagnosis and prediction of the MACE occurrences in patients with ACS at early stage.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide so, early prediction and diagnosis of cardiovascular disease is essential for patients affected by this fatal disease. The goal of this article is to propose a machine learning–based 1-year mortality prediction model after discharge in clinical patients with acute coronary syndrome. We used the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry data set, a cardiovascular disease database registered in 52 hospitals in Korea for 1 November 2005–30 January 2008 and selected 10,813 subjects with 1-year follow-up traceability. The ranges of hyperparameters to find the best prediction model were selected from four different machine learning models. Then, we generated each machine learning–based mortality prediction model with hyperparameters completed the range fitness via grid search using training data and was evaluated by fourfold stratified cross-validation. The best prediction model with the highest performance was found, and its hyperparameters were extracted. Finally, we compared the performance of machine learning–based mortality prediction models with GRACE in area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, precision, recall, accuracy, and F-score. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve in applied machine learning algorithms was averagely improved up to 0.08 than in GRACE, and their major prognostic factors were different. This implementation would be beneficial for prediction and early detection of major adverse cardiovascular events in acute coronary syndrome patients.

Wafer maps provide engineers with important information about the root causes of failures during the semiconductor manufacturing process. Through the efficient recognition of the wafer map failure pattern type, the semiconductor manufacturing process and its product performance can be improved, as well as reducing the product cost. Therefore, this paper proposes an accurate model for the automatic recognition of wafer map failure types using a deep learning-based convolutional neural network (DCNN). For this experiment, we use WM811K, which is an open-source real-time wafer map dataset containing wafer map images of nine failure classes. Our research contents can be briefly summarized as follows. First, we use random sampling to extract 500 images from each class of the original image dataset. Then we propose a deep convolutional neural network model to generate a multi-class classification model. Lastly, we evaluate the performance of the proposed prediction model and compare it with three other popular machine learning-based models—logistic regression, random forest, and gradient boosted decision trees—and several well-known deep learning models—VGGNet, ResNet, and EfficientNet. Consequently, the comprehensive analysis showed that the performance of the proposed DCNN model outperformed those of other popular machine learning and deep learning-based prediction models.
