This longitudinal cohort correlational study aimed to confirm the relation among taekyo or traditional prenatal practice, prenatal depression, postpartum depression, maternal–fetal interaction, and infant temperament and colic using a prospective design. We recruited 212 women 16–20 weeks pregnant from July 2017 to September 2018; they were followed up until six months postpartum. Data from 97 participants were used in the final analysis. We used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Cranley’s Maternal–Fetal Attachment Scale, and What My Baby Is Like as measurement tools. We observed a significant correlation between prenatal maternal depression in the first to third trimesters and 6–8 weeks and six months postpartum. In addition, infant temperament at six months old showed a significant negative correlation with prenatal and postpartum depression: the higher the prenatal and postpartum depression level, the more difficult the infant’s temperament. Taekyo practice was significantly related to maternal–fetal attachment (r = 0.45−0.68, p < 0.001). Difficult infants showed more colic episodes than any other type of infant (χ2 = 18.18, p < 0.001). Prenatal and postnatal maternal depression affected infants’ temperament and colic episodes. The management of mothers’ mental health before and after pregnancy is important for infants’ and mothers’ health.

This study examines the relationship between the emotions of mothers and fetal development and explores the modifying effect that family income has on this relationship. Socio-demographic information, maternal depression, stress, positive and negative emotions, and maternal-fetal attachment data were collected at 16–20 weeks of pregnancy. Data on fetal body weight and biparietal diameter indicating fetal development were collected at 33–35 weeks to observe the longitudinal effects of mothers’ emotions on fetal development. We divided subjects into two groups: those with more than 150% of the median income were classified as the high-income group and less than 150% as the middle-income group. T-test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis on maternal emotional status and fetal development were performed for each group. A positive correlation was found between maternal-fetal attachment and negative emotion that was associated with the biparietal diameter and fetal body weight only in the middle-income group. Results of the multiple regression analysis were statistically significant, indicating that maternal-fetal attachment was associated with fetal weight. These results show that the management of subjective emotion is associated with healthy development of the fetus and contributes to health equity.

Hydrotherapy is widely used for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients, but it can also be applied to prevent diseases in healthy people. This review investigates the health effects of water immersion, a form of hydrotherapy, and the mechanisms by which the properties of water elicit such an effect. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL to identify relevant articles, of which 13 met the inclusion criteria. Various factors of water immersion were investigated in the 13 selected articles, including water temperature, immersion height, and application area. With respect to health effects, warm and cold water immersion affects the cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems, respectively. Nine articles focused on the effects of warm water immersion, explaining its thermal effect in relation to changes in disease-related serum substance levels and hemodynamic changes. While the sample population in most studies comprised young adults, two articles applied partial water immersion to the legs of elderly subjects to assess its effect on sleep. Because the water immersion protocols applied in the 13 articles were inconsistent, the health benefits could not be clearly explained. However, we expect the present findings to be beneficial for providing research guidelines for studies on the application of water immersion.

The purpose of this study was to examine the multiple intergenerational risk factors of obesity among children aged 24 to 80 months using national cohort data. This is a retrospective longitudinal cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance (KNHI) database, and the number of study participants was 1,001,775 families. Social-Economic Status (SES), parental and child-related factors were examined. Descriptive statistics and Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) for a decision tree analysis were conducted. The prevalence of obesity was 6.57%, and that of overweight was 11.31% among the entire study population. The 17 groups with a prevalence of childhood obesity higher than the mean prevalence rate were classified as high-risk groups for childhood obesity; there were 6 groups with a prevalence of childhood obesity twice as high as the mean prevalence rate from this study. The best predictors were as follows: mothers being obese prior to conception, fathers being obese, non- medical aid beneficiaries, and mothers with hypertension during gestation. The best predictors of children obesity were parental obesity history and SES. Other parental predictors of outcomes were gestational hypertension and diabetes, older pregnancy, drinking during gestation, and depression after delivery. Child-related outcome predictors were noncompliance with exclusive breastfeeding, a sugar-sweetened beverage intake ≥200 ml per day, and irregular breakfast consumption. These findings could help community health nurses assess high-risk groups for early childhood obesity and develop or provide effective interventions in the early stages of life.

We conducted a campus forest-walking program targeting university and graduate students during their lunchtime and examined the physical and psychological effects of the program. We utilized a quasi-experimental design with a control group and a pretest–posttest design. Forty-seven men (M = 25.5 ± 3.8 years) and 52 women (M = 23.3 ± 4.3 years) volunteered to participate (experimental group n = 51, control group n = 48). The intervention group participated in campus forest-walking program once a week for six weeks; they were also asked to walk once a week additionally on an individual basis. Additionally, participants received one lecture on stress management. Post-tests were conducted both just after the program ended and three months after. A chi-square test, t-test, and repeated measures analysis of variance were used to evaluate the effects of the program. Health promoting behaviors (F = 7.27, p = 0.001, ES = 0.27) and parasympathetic nerve activity (F = 3.69, p = 0.027, ES = 0.20) significantly increased and depression (F = 3.15, p = 0.045, ES = 0.18) significantly decreased in the experimental group after the intervention compared to the control group. In conclusion, using the campus walking program to target students during their lunchtime is an efficient strategy to promote their physical and psychological health.

This study systematically reviewed forest therapy programs designed to decrease the level of depression among adults and assessed the methodological rigor and scientific evidence quality of existing research studies to guide future studies. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The authors independently screened full-text articles from various databases using the following criteria: (1) intervention studies assessing the effects of forest therapy on depressive symptoms in adults aged 18 years and older; (2) studies including at least one control group or condition; (3) peer-reviewed studies; and (4) been published either in English or Korean before July 2016. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network measurement tool was used to assess the risk of bias in each trial. In the final sample, 28 articles (English: 13, Korean: 15) were included in the systematic review. We concluded that forest therapy is an emerging and effective intervention for decreasing adults’ depression levels. However, the included studies lacked methodological rigor. Future studies assessing the long-term effect of forest therapy on depression using rigorous study designs are needed.

SummaryPurposeThis study explored health-related quality of life (QoL) in Korean elderly individuals with hypertension, diabetes, and/or cardiovascular disease (CVD).MethodsThis study used a population-based cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008, which involved a nationally representative sample. Data on health-related QoL were collected using the EuroQoL-5 Dimension instrument and via health interviews. The sample consisted of 1,467 Korean individuals aged 60 years and older. A multiple linear regression model was used to analyze health-related QoL.ResultsAfter controlling for sociodemographic and lifestyle variables, individuals with one of the aforementioned chronic diseases had lower EuroQoL-5 Dimension scores, ranging from 0.186 among those with only hypertension to 0.469 among those with hypertension plus CVD, compared with those without a chronic disease (higher scores are indicative of more limitations). The impact of comorbid diseases was greater than that of any single disease except diabetes. CVD had a stronger negative impact on QoL than did any other single disease studied. Whereas the physical elements of QoL were influenced by all diseases, the psychological components were influenced only by hypertension plus diabetes and hypertension plus CVD.ConclusionWe found that both the number and the type of diseases affected QoL scores. Efforts to prevent or manage diabetes, CVD, and related risk factors should include psychological support

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of low-income urban elders by diversified ways, and to analyze the risk factors for malnutrition. The participants in this study were 183 low-income elders registered at a visiting healthcare facility in a public health center. Data were collected using anthropometric measurements, and a questionnaire survey. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, χ²-test, t-test, Fisher's exact test, multiple logistic regression analysis were performed using SPSS 20.0. Regarding the nutritional status of low-income elders as measured by the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), 10.4% of the elders were classified as malnourished; 57.4% as at high risk for malnutrition; and 32.2% as having normal nutrition levels. The main factors affecting malnutrition for low-income elders were loss of appetite (OR=3.34, 95% CI: 1.16~9.56) and difficulties in meal preparation (OR=2.35, 95% CI: 1.13~4.88). In order to effectively improve nutrition in low-income urban elders, it is necessary to develop individual intervention strategies to manage factors that increase the risk of malnutrition and to use systematic approach strategies in local communities in terms of a nutrition support system.

This study was done to test a structural equation modeling of case management outcomes in order to identify parameters affecting case management outcomes for the community-dwelling vulnerable elders. Data were collected from 309 nurses (case managers) and community-dwelling vulnerable elders (clients) from public health centers. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, factor analysis, and covariance structure analysis were performed using SPSS Version 18.0 for Windows and Amos 16.0. The hypothetical model had an acceptable fit: GFI=.97, CFI=.95, RMSEA=.02, SRMR=.05. The factor "case managers' singularity" had the greatest impact on case management outcomes in this model. In addition, the factor "case management practice" influenced case management outcomes; however, client characteristics did not. Case managers' singularity affected case management outcomes directly and indirectly, with case management practice mediating the latter effect. These results suggest that the causal relationship between case management outcomes and factors influencing these outcomes should be clarified through longitudinal research including a variety of client characteristics. In addition, in future studies, analysis of the effects of programs to improve manpower quality and examine the relationships among case management outcomes should be done.

This study aims to explore the relationships between health-related behavioral and psychological factors and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CCVD) comorbidities among Korean adults with diabetes mellitus (DM). Data included in the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. This study compared three groups: those diagnosed with DM only, DM and hypertension, DM, hypertension and CCVD using multinomial logistic regression analyses and the classification and regression tree (CART) model. Weight control (OR = 4.01) and depression (OR = 2.37) are related with increased odds of having hypertension and CCVD comorbidity in those with DM. The CART model suggested that the high prevalence risk groups for hypertension or CCVD comorbidities were diabetic adults aged between 51 and 69 with a body mass index of 25 and above and those aged 70 and above. For effective control of CCVD comorbidities among diabetic Korean adults, psychological support for depression and weight control need to be prioritized when managing DM. Weight control intervention needs to be reinforced for DM patients aged between 51 and 69 and that even if BMI is below 25, the occurrence of comorbidities needs to be carefully monitored for DM patients aged 70 or older.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that increase of the risk for falls in low-income elders in urban areas. The participants were elderly people registered in one of public health centers in one city. Data were collected by interviewing the elders, assessing their environmental risk factors, and surveying relevant secondary data from the public health center records. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were performed using SPSS version 14. Stroke, diabetes, visual deficits, frequency of dizziness, use of assistive devices and moderate depression were statistically significant risk factors. The comorbidity of chronic diseases with other factors including depression, visual deficit, dizziness, and use of assistive devices significantly increased the risk of falls. From multiple logistic regression analysis, statistically significant predictors of falls were found to be stroke, total environmental risk scores, comorbidity of diabetes with visual deficits, and with depression. Fall prevention interventions should be multifactorial, especially for the elders with stroke or diabetes, who were identified in this study as the high risk group for falls. A fall risk assessment tool for low-income elders should include both the intrinsic factors like depression, dizziness, and use of assistive devices, and the extrinsic factors.
