Since the last few years there has been a massive spurt of Research on Blockchain Technologies and several attempts at incorporating them for a myriad of Business Applications. Blockchain Technologies promised to bring about decentralized trust having the potential to disrupt digital ecosystems by providing alternatives to centralized storage and management of data. This has the potential to radically transform industries and services through new models of data storage, transparency, tracking, payment systems amongst other advantages. However, Blockchain Technology is designed to provide other Value Propositions beyond decentralized storage, such as innovative crypto economic and investment models and radical new forms of decentralized participative governance models that could lead to the evolution of new generation of Digital Platforms and multi stakeholder business interactions. In this paper, through a systematic literature review, we present a set of key Blockchain Value Propositions and a discussion on how it can complement to the evolution of Digital Platforms and the Collaborative Economy. We also argue that while some of the value propositions are easier to integrate with existing Digital Platforms, more disruptive value propositions such as Business Automation, Economic and Governance Models present greater challenges but could lead to not just innovation at the technological level, but also metamorphosis of the existing social, economic and governance models.

To excel in the overall business performance, daily processes and activities connected to produce a good or service need to be outperformed. Even though there is extensive literature on performance management and performance management systems, there is still no consensus over the conceptual model of such systems, in what is designated as Operational Performance Management Systems (OPMS). This chapter proposes a new approach to conceive feasible and desirable OPMS tools to assist managers on controlling and responding to operational needs, by combining Design Thinking (DT) and Data Analytics (DA), that provide holistic and deep business knowledge, as well as a data-driven based management. The authors conduct an empirical application through a case study within the context of a European airport’s Baggage Handling System (BHS). The case study procedure follows the proposed methodology’s stages, where the authors construct the problem space with a wide array of collected data, along with the solution exploration and refinement.

The Model Driven Architecture (MDA) makes available an open approach to write specifications and develop applications, separating the application and business functionality from the platform technology. As well, the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) establishes a software architectural concept that defines the use of services to support the requirements of software users, making them available as independent services accessible in a standardized way. This paper analyzes how the combination of these two architectures provide a suitable framework to improve construction companies interoperability through the adoption of a standard-based extended environment, and validates its applicability, with two case scenario applications, against the traditional business factors that often hinder e-platforms deployment.

The current competitive environment demands cooperative arrangements like buyer-supplier dyads to struggle for the success of supply chains. Managing inter-firm relationships is a decisive and highly demanding activity, whereas business interoperability (BI) is key to achieve meaningful interactions to create value. Nonetheless, cooperation issues due to lack of interoperability constrain the success buyer-supplier dyads. Problems ranging from technical to strategical perspectives of BI may lead to problems like lack of coordination which decrease the supply chain surplus. Interoperability literature provides several contributions and frameworks to deal with different interoperability issues. Nonetheless, it is missing a cohesive framework allowing one to address inter-firm relationships in the full scope of BI. The present paper proposes a framework to support the analysis of interoperability conditions in buyer-supplier dyads. A case study was conducted to demonstrate the framework, and what decisions are required to improve or scale-up cooperation.

The main aim of this study is to identify the key factors in User Generated Content (UGC) on the Twitter social network for the creation of successful startups, as well as to identify factors for sustainable startups and business models. New technologies were used in the proposed research methodology to identify the key factors for the success of startup projects. First, a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model was used, which is a state-of-the-art thematic modeling tool that works in Python and determines the database topic by analyzing tweets for the #Startups hashtag on Twitter (n = 35.401 tweets). Secondly, a Sentiment Analysis was performed with a Supervised Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm that works with Machine Learning in Python. This was applied to the LDA results to divide the identified startup topics into negative, positive, and neutral sentiments. Thirdly, a Textual Analysis was carried out on the topics in each sentiment with Text Data Mining techniques using Nvivo software. This research has detected that the topics with positive feelings for the identification of key factors for the startup business success are startup tools, technology-based startup, the attitude of the founders, and the startup methodology development. The negative topics are the frameworks and programming languages, type of job offers, and the business angels’ requirements. The identified neutral topics are the development of the business plan, the type of startup project, and the incubator’s and startup’s geolocation. The limitations of the investigation are the number of tweets in the analyzed sample and the limited time horizon. Future lines of research could improve the methodology used to determine key factors for the creation of successful startups and could also study sustainable issues.

SmartLife aims to promote healthy living habits and avoid sedentary lifestyles in adolescents by creating a mobile game that requires lower body movement, and uses tailored feedback, based on physical activity indices measured by a smart shirt. To date, no serious games exist that tailor game play by real-time feedback on achievement of the target behaviour. This approach can improve current exergames by reaching higher levels of intensity in physical activity, which is needed to impact on health. The tailored approach also supports competence and feasibility and hence reduces drop-out and injury risks. SmartLife combines exergame and smart textiles. Gaming experience is tailored according to feedbacks and the physical activity indices measured by the smart shirt providing the user with better game experience. Consequently, SmartLife holds the potential to contribute to better health by exergaming. A mobile exergame has been developed in co-creation with the target group and improved in an iterative testing process.

Digital marketing has received much attention from most firms recently. With the increasing competition and exigency, marketing managers’ need for reliable and scientifically supported decision systems to assist them has never been greater. This paper presents a management model for estimating the quantity of online leads they should generate in a given period of time in order to achieve their goal, measured in terms of contracts gained in the most effective and efficient way possible. Through the application of Game Theory, the strategies of the rival firms are taken into account to provide marketing managers with a set of reliable possible decisions that can provide a competitive advantage. Results show a clear improvement of the effectiveness and efficiency of the decisions. In certain scenarios, an increase in the quantity of online generated leads by a firm leads to a positive impact on the firm’s and the competitors’ sales. Results obtained from the Nash and Stackelberg equilibria show that the Stackelberg equilibrium is more efficient, given the higher expected profits it derives and the follower in the Stackelberg equilibrium yields a higher expected profit than the leader or first mover.

This article analyzes the potential benefits of applying Nudge Theory for risk management in scaling up companies. Considering importance of risk management in preventing failure of firms to entrepreneurs; this research uses the notion of Behavioural Economics to offer valuable insights into how scaling up companies can benefit from the implementation of risk management process supported by applying nudges techniques. To overcome some of the barriers in implementing the risk management; we propose a conceptual framework for risk mitigation, which is based on Nudge theory and using behavioral approach. The goal is to contribute to the success of scale up companies during transition period by improving the efficiency of risk treatment. This study seeks to take an essential step towards a general understanding of the influence of utilizing Nudging for employees in planning of risk actions. This paper reviews some challenges of implementing Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). We focus on behavioural solutions in risk treatment to overcome a part of the barriers. Additionally, the concept of “Nudg” and some nudge techniques are explained that are used in the presented framework. We conclude by outlining relevant ideas for further investigation on this topic, by suggesting a set of implications for academics and policymakers.

Exergames, more specifically console-based exergames, are generally enjoyed by adolescents and known to increase physical activity. Nevertheless, they have a reduced usage over time and demonstrate little effectiveness over the long term. In order to increase playing time, mobile exergames may increase potential playing time, but need to be engaging and integrated in everyday life. The goal of the present study was to examine the context of gameplay for mobile exergaming in adolescents’ everyday life to inform game design and the integration of gameplay into everyday life. Eight focus groups were conducted with 49 Flemish adolescents (11 to 17 years of age). The focus groups were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed by means of thematic analysis via Nvivo 11 software (QSR International Pty Ltd., Victoria, Australia). The adolescents indicated leisure time and travel time to and from school as suitable timeframes for playing a mobile exergame. Outdoor gameplay should be restricted to the personal living environment of adolescents. Besides outdoor locations, the game should also be adaptable to at-home activities. Activities could vary from running outside to fitness exercises inside. Furthermore, the social context of the game was important, e.g., playing in teams or meeting at (virtual) meeting points. Physical activity tracking via smart clothing was identified as a motivator for gameplay. By means of this study, game developers may be better equipped to develop mobile exergames that embed gameplay in adolescents’ everyday life.

A product search service in an e-Procurement Marketplace can help the suppliers to find the best suitable tenders according to their products. Various possible ways to define and specify a product by different companies make it difficult to match a tender as a product request with the similar products offered by the suppliers. Semantic search engines try to overcome this problem by understanding the intent and contextual meaning of the words within a search domain. A fundamental part of such search engines can be a named entity recogniser that extracts desired searchable elements from the search context. This paper develops a recogniser that can extract “Procurement Product” mentions from tenders and other procurement documents. A self-learning approach has been adopted in order to train the model for extracting product mentions. The proposed approach uses already known product mentions in tenders as the training data to train the model and then use the trained model to recognize the product mentions from other tenders. The accuracy of the model has been tested evaluated using tenders that have been published in public procurement e-marketplaces. The results show that the proposed approach achieved high values of precision and recall in different test datasets. The recogniser can be used as the search element extractor for semantic search in procurement e-marketplaces. Therefore, the improvement of search performance by using the recogniser is also tested in finding tenders from different public procurement resources. The results show the semantic search process which uses the recogniser improves the search precision by about 25%.

Purpose Searching the tender notices that publish every day in open tendering websites is a common way for finding business opportunity in public procurement. The heterogeneity of tender notices from various tendering marketplaces is a challenge for exploiting semantic technologies in the tender search. Design/methodology/approach Most of the semantic matching approaches require the data to be structured and integrated according to a data model. But the integration process can be expensive and time-consuming especially for multi-source data integration. Findings In this paper, a product search mechanism that had been developed in an e-procurement platform for matching product e-catalogues is applied to the tender search problem. The search performance has been compared using two procurement vocabularies on searching tender notices from two major tender resources. Originality/value The test results show that the matching mechanism is able to find tender notices from heterogeneous resources and different classification systems without transforming the tenders to a uniform data model.

This paper proposes an agent-based model for evaluating the effect of business interoperability on the performance of cooperative supply chain networks. The model is based on insights from the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing network approach and the complex systems theory perspective. To demonstrate its applicability, an explanatory case study regarding a Portuguese reverse logistics cooperative supply chain network is presented. Face-to-face interviews and forms were used to collect data. The findings show that the establishment of appropriate levels of business interoperability has helped to reduce several non-value-added interaction processes and consequently improve the operational performance of the Valorpneu network. Regarding the research implications, this paper extends the current knowledge on business interoperability and an important problem in business: how business interoperability gaps in dyadic organizational relationships affect the network of companies that the two companies belong to—network effect. In terms of practical implications, managers can use the proposed model as a starting point to simulate complex interactions between supply chain network partners and understand better how the performance of their networks emerges from these interactions and from the adoption of different levels of business interoperability.

Online businesses can be represented as a complex interaction of interconnected online users responding to the value proposition of an online company. We propose a Dynamic Agent-Based Modeling framework (DYNAMOD) that aims to explain these complex dynamics. This framework aids in the creation of simulation models that mimic the actual market behavior and perform business forecasting and decision support functions. Through a case study of the largest e-procurement provider in Portugal – Vortal.biz, we simulate their pricing model and analyze revenue impact by optimizing pricing using genetic algorithms. The objective of this research is to propose agent-based model as an effective method to forecast the impact of pricing decisions.
