Global warming and rapid socioeconomic development increased the risk of regional and global disasters. Particularly in China, annual heatwaves (HWs) caused many fatalities and substantial property damage, with an increasing trend. Therefore, it is of great scientific value and practical importance to analyze the spatiotemporal changes of HW in China for the sustainable development of regional socioeconomic and disaster risk management. In this study, based on gridded maximum temperature product and specific humidity dataset, an HW evaluation algorithm, considering the impact of humidity on the human body and the characteristics of HW in China, was employed to generate daily HW state at light, moderate, and severe levels for the period 1979–2018. Consequently, the regional differences at three HW levels were revealed, and the changing trend of HW onset, termination, and duration in each subregion was analyzed. The results show that in the three levels, the frequency and duration of HW in China had a significant increasing trend, generally characterized by the advancement of HW onset and the postponement of HW termination. The HW influence at light, moderate and severe levels decreased gradually, with the light level occurring the earliest and terminating the latest. Among the seven subregions, the largest HW frequency happened to be mainly in XJ (Xinjiang), SC (Southern China), and NC (Northern China), while the variations of HW onset and termination had noticeable regional differences at the three levels. The findings presented in this study can provide the essential scientific and technological support for national and regional disaster prevention mitigation and adaptation to extreme climate events.

Levee breaches are some of the most common hazards in the world and cause the loss of lives, livelihoods, and property destruction. During the 2010 flood in Pakistan, the most devastating breach occurred at Tori Levee on the right bank of the Indus River, downstream of the Guddu Barrage, which caused residual floods in northern Sindh and the adjoining regions of the Balochistan province. In this study, 2D unsteady flow modeling performed for Tori Levee breach computed residual flood inundation by coupling a HEC-RAS (Hydrological Engineering Centre—River Analysis System) 2D hydraulic model with remote sensing and Geographic Information System techniques. The model performance was judged by comparing the observed and simulated water levels (stage) during peak flow at seven different gauging stations located within the Indus River reach and daily flood extents and multi-day composites. The quantitative values for the calibration and validation of the HEC-RAS model showed good performance with a range of difference from 0.13 to −0.54 m between the simulated and observed water levels (stage), 84% match for the maximum flood inundation area, and 73.2% for the measure of fit. The overall averages of these values for the daily flood comparison were 57.12 and 75%, respectively. Furthermore, the simulated maximum flow passed through the Tori Levee breach, which was found to be 4994.47 cumecs (about 15% of peak flow) with a head water stage of 71.56 m. By using the simulated flows through the Tori Levee breach, the flood risk maps for the 2010 flood identified hazard zones according to the flood characteristics (depth, velocity, depth times velocity, arrival time, and duration). All the flood risk maps concluded the fact that the active flood plain was uninhabitable under flood conditions.

In this study, the hydrological system of the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF-Hydro) is applied to simulate the streamflow at the Kaidu River Basin, which is vital to the ecological system in the lower reaches of the Tarim River in Northwest China. The offline WRF-Hydro model is coupled with the Noah multi-parameterization land surface model (Noah-MP) and is forced by the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD), with the grid spacing of the hydrological routing modules being 250 m. A 3-year period (1983–1985) is used for calibration and a 17-year period (1986–2002) for the evaluation. Several key parameters of WRF-Hydro and four Noah-MP parameterization options are calibrated, and the performance of WRF-Hydro with the optimized model setting is evaluated using the daily streamflow observations. The results indicate that WRF-Hydro can reproduce the observed streamflow reasonably, with underestimation of the streamflow peaks. The simulated streamflow is sensitive to the parameters of bexp, dksat, smcmax, REFKDT, slope, OVROUGHRTAC and mann in the Kaidu River Basin. At the same time, the parameterization options of Noah-MP also have a large influence on the streamflow simulation. The WRF-Hydro model with optimized model settings can achieve correlation coefficient (CC) and Nash efficiency coefficient (NSE) statistical scores of 0.78 and 0.61, respectively, for the calibration period. Meanwhile, for the evaluation period, the scores are 0.7 and 0.50, respectively. This study indicates the importance of applying the physical-based WRF-Hydro model over Northwest China and provides a reference for the nearby regions.
