Due to the absorption and scattering effects of light in water bodies and the non-uniformity and insufficiency of artificial illumination, underwater images often present various degradation problems, impacting their utility in underwater applications. In this paper, we propose a model-based underwater image simulation and learning-based underwater image enhancement method for coping with various degradation problems in underwater images. We first derive a simplified model for describing various degradation problems in underwater images, then propose a model-based image simulation method that can generate images with a wide range of parameter values. The proposed image simulation method also comes with an image-selection part, which helps to prune the simulation dataset so that it can serve as a training set for learning to enhance the targeted underwater images. Afterwards, we propose a convolutional neural network based on the encoder-decoder backbone to learn to enhance various underwater images from the simulated images. Experiments on simulated and real underwater images with different degradation problems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed underwater image simulation and enhancement method, and reveal the advantages of the proposed method in comparison with many state-of-the-art methods.

In the shallow-water environment, underwater images often present problems like color deviation and low contrast due to light absorption and scattering in the water body, but for deep-sea images, additional problems like uneven brightness and regional color shift can also exist, due to the use of chromatic and inhomogeneous artificial lighting devices. Since the latter situation is rarely studied in the field of underwater image enhancement, we propose a new model to include it in the analysis of underwater image degradation. Based on the theoretical study of the new model, a comprehensive method for enhancing underwater images under different illumination conditions is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is composed of two modules: color-tone correction and fusion-based descattering. In the first module, the regional or full-extent color deviation caused by different types of incident light is corrected via frequency-based color-tone estimation. And in the second module, the residual low contrast and pixel-wise color shift problems are handled by combining the descattering results under the assumption of different states of the image. The proposed method is experimented on laboratory and open-water images of different depths and illumination states. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms many other methods in enhancing the quality of different types of underwater images, and is especially effective in improving the color accuracy and information content in badly-illuminated regions of underwater images with non-uniform illumination, such as deep-sea images.

Broadband anti-reflection (AR) coatings are essential elements for improving the photocurrent generation of photovoltaic modules and enhancing visibility in optical devices. In this paper, we report a hybrid-structured, anti-reflection coating that combines multi-layer thin films with a single top-oblique deposited layer. By simply introducing this low-refractive index layer, the broadband anti-reflection properties of optical thin films can be improved while simplifying the preparation. Precise time-controlled and oblique-angle deposition (OAD) methods were used to fabricate the broadband AR coating. By accurately measuring and adjusting the design errors for the thin and thick film layers, 22-layer and 36-layer AR coatings on a sapphire substrate with a 400–2000 nm wideband were obtained. This bottom-up preparation process and AR coating design have the potential to significantly enhance the broadband antireflective properties for many optical systems and reduce the manufacturing cost of broadband AR coatings.

Introduction: Marine ferromanganese crusts are potentially important metal resources. The deep-ocean research and survey ships often need to carry out rapid chemical element component analysis of mineral resources, so as to plan for the geological resource exploration mission. Methods: The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy can obtain the spectrum of chemical elements by the plasma excited by high-energy laser irradiation on the surface of the sample. A laser induced breakdown spectroscopy optical system for the detection of deepocean ferromanganese crusts is designed and built, which can meet the requirements of near-insitu chemical component detection of deep-ocean mineral resources on ocean-going survey ships. Results: Hyperspectral data of Fe-Mn crusts are carried out by the Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) system during a deep-sea exploration mission at a depth of 2,490 m in the South China Sea. The experimental parameters of laser energy and spectral acquisition delay are optimized to improve the spectral measurement accuracy. Based on the calibration-free method, the significant spectral features of the chemical elements Fe and Mn were obtained through proper alignment with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) chemical element spectral library.Discussion: The LIBS instrument can be placed on board long-range survey vessels in the future to provide a fast, convenient, accurate, and economical detection method for deep-ocean resource exploration.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an attractive optical plastic that is widely used in augmented reality, virtual reality devices, display, wearable devices, portable optical equipment, and lightweight optics. Thin film prepared by physical vapor deposition (PVD) is the primary choice of coating on PMMA. However, it faces problems with coating adhesion and stress. In this paper, we analyze the problems existing in the current PMMA high-reflection (HR) coating in detail and propose a way to effectively solve issues with bonding force and stress. Based on the current research background, the bonding force was enhanced by introducing a special hard coating as the connection layer between the dielectric film and the substrate. After comparing the stresses of different coating materials and material combinations, the optimal combination of Nb2O5 and SiO2 was determined, and the requirements were successfully prepared. An HR coating that satisfies requirements, with low stress and excellent environmental adaptability, was successfully prepared. Based on this, a broadband HR coating from 750 to 1550 nm was formed on the surface of PMMA by adjusting the partial pressure of oxygen.
