We study the Mie-like scattering from an open subwavelength resonator made of a high-index dielectric material, when its parameters are tuned to the regime of interfering resonances. We uncover a novel mechanism of superscattering, closely linked to strong coupling of the resonant modes and described by the physics of bound states in the continuum (BICs). We demonstrate that the enhanced scattering occurs due to constructive interference described by the Friedrich-Wintgen mechanism of interfering resonances, allowing to push the scattering cross section of a multipole resonance beyond the currently established limit. We develop a general non-Hermitian model to describe interfering resonances of the quasi-normal modes, and study subwavelength dielectric nonspherical resonators exhibiting avoided crossing resonances associated with quasi-BIC states. We confirm our theoretical findings by a scattering experiment conducted in the microwave frequency range. Our results reveal a new strategy to boost scattering from non-Hermitian systems, suggesting important implications for metadevices.

Since about one and half centuries ago, at the dawn of modern communications, the radio and the optics have been two separate electromagnetic spectrum regions to carry data. Differentiated by their generation/detection methods and propagation properties, the two paths have evolved almost independently until today. The optical technologies dominate the long-distance and high-speed terrestrial wireline communications through fiber-optic telecom systems, whereas the radio technologies have mainly dominated the short- to medium-range wireless scenarios. Now, these two separate counterparts are both facing a sign of saturation in their respective roadmap horizons, particularly in the segment of free-space communications. The optical technologies are extending into the mid-wave and long-wave infrared (MWIR and LWIR) regimes to achieve better propagation performance through the dynamic atmospheric channels. Radio technologies strive for higher frequencies like the millimeter-wave (MMW) and sub-terahertz (sub-THz) to gain broader bandwidth. The boundary between the two is becoming blurred and intercrossed. During the past few years, we witnessed technological breakthroughs in free-space transmission supporting very high data rates, many achieved with the assistance of photonics. This paper focuses on such photonics-assisted free-space communication technologies in both the lower and upper sides of the THz gap and provides a detailed review of recent research and development activities on some of the key enabling technologies. Our recent experimental demonstrations of high-speed free-space transmissions in both frequency regions are also presented as examples to show the system requirements for device characteristics and digital signal processing (DSP) performance.

Increased demand of consumers on services in the mobile environment with high data rate and technologically developed mobile broadband communication systems will require more spectrum to be available in the future. The new technologies require frequencies for their development and usage. One of the main objectives of fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems, known also as IMT-2020, is to increase the current data rates up to several gigabits per second (Gbit/s) with even more than 10 Gbit/s. One possibility is to consider the use of higher frequencies in order to increase the available bandwidth, which is necessary to achieve such data rates. Main idea of the research is to investigate the available International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) frequency bands and possible new one above 6GHz for possible identification worldwide and in Europe for IMT by the 2019 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19). Main characteristics and requirements of IMT-2020 are also provided in this paper.

The radar-centric terahertz integrated sensing and communication (THz-ISAC) is identified as a significant application in future wireless access networks. Up to date, previously reported demonstrations regarding radar sensing performance lack sufficient support in a complex environment with a strong target masking effect. This work tacks this problem by proposing a radar-centric waveform combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform and phase shift keying (PSK). We first derive sensing metrics of the LFM-PSK waveform through theoretical analysis, including range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR), and Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Then a proof-of-concept experiment on a photonics-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating at 330 with 18 GHz bandwidth is conducted to verify the performance of the proposed LFM-PSK waveform. In the experiment, the proposed waveform can reach a PSLR of up to 20.9 dB and a range resolution of 1.3 cm, simultaneously accommodating a data transmission of 6 Gbit/s. In addition, the effect of embedding symbols on sensing metrics is also discussed, and by comparing the range solution and PSLR with various data rates, around $\sim$ 6 dB gain in the PSLR without any deterioration of range resolution is observed.

All‐dielectric nanophotonics has become one of the most active fields of research in modern optics, largely due to the opportunities offered by the simultaneous resonant control of electric and magnetic components of light at the nanoscale. In this rapidly evolving scenario, the possibility to design artificial Huygens sources by overlapping electric and magnetic resonances has established a new paradigm in flat optics, bringing devices closer to efficient wavefront shaping with direct phase engineering at the level of the individual meta‐atoms. However, their efficiency is fundamentally limited by the near‐field coupling between the constituents of the metalattice. In this work, we challenge this well‐conceived notion and propose an alternative concept to achieve phase control and full transmission in metasurfaces, based on the unusual properties of the nonradiating sources known as hybrid anapoles (HAs). We analyze theoretically an array of such sources and demonstrate that HAs are characterized by negligible coupling with their neighbors. Therefore, in contrast to Huygens particles, the proposed sources can operate as individual meta‐atoms even in highly compact designs, becoming robust against strong disorder and preserving its characteristics when deposited on dielectric substrates. Remarkably, the phase of the transmitted wave can be modulated with negligible reflection. To illustrate the capabilities of our platform, we also utilize a disordered HA array to implement a controlled phase modulation to an ultrafast Gaussian pulse. The results of our study represent a departure from the currently established designs and open an avenue toward the realization of new devices for flat optics with unprecedented efficiency.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) enable unique features in tailoring light-matter interaction on nanoscale. These radiationless localized states drive theoretically infinite quality factors and lifetimes for modern nanophotonics, making room for a variety of emerging applications. Here we use the peculiar properties possessed by the so-called PT symmetric optical structures to propose the novel mechanism for the quasi-BIC manifestation governed by the PT symmetry breaking. In particular, we study regularities of the spontaneous PT symmetry breaking in trilayer structures with the outer loss and gain layers consisting of materials with permittivity close to zero. We reveal singular points on the curves separating PT symmetric and broken-PT symmetry states in the parametric space of the light frequency and the angle of incidence. These singularities remarkably coincide with the BIC positions at the frequency of volume plasmon excitation, where the dielectric permittivity vanishes. The loss and gain value acts as an asymmetry parameter that disturbs conditions of the ideal BIC inducing the quasi-BIC. Fascinating properties of these quasi-BICs having ultrahigh quality factors and almost perfect transmission can be utilized in sensing, nonlinear optics, and other applications.
