A series of casting experiments was conducted with A356 aluminum alloys by applying vibration treatment and using Al-TiB2 composite master alloys. The main vibration effects include the promotion of nucleation and a reduction in as-cast grain size. Using composite master alloys with titanium diboride microparticles allows further reduction in the average grain size to 140 µm. The reasons for this behavior are discussed in terms of the complex effect on the melt, considering the destruction of dendrites, and the presence of additional crystallization centers. Tensile tests were performed on the samples obtained during the vibration treatment and with titanium diboride particles. The tensile strength increased from 182 to 227 MPa after the vibration treatment for the alloys containing titanium diboride.

The article considered the solution of the inverse problem of chemical kinetics of the analysis of experimental data of a thermogravimetric experiment at a constant sample heating rate. The fitting method for identifying the parameters of a kinetic triplet using the integral method for a model of a solid-state reaction based on the modified Arrhenius equation is described. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was confirmed by solving test cases for low, medium, and high rates of material conversion. Unlike other methods, setting the parameters of the reaction mechanism is not required, as they are determined by the solution. Solutions for real data of TGA studies with high and low sample heating rates were compared with the results obtained by other authors and experimental data. A description of the full cycle of calculations used to identify kinetic parameters from thermogravimetric experimental data is given, from the derivation of calculated relationships to the implementation of a short (three to five formulas) program code for MS Excel spreadsheets. The presented code is easy to verify and reproduce and can be modified to solve various problems.

This paper examines dispersion hardened alloys based on commercial-purity aluminum obtained by permanent mold casting with the addition of aluminum oxide nanoparticles. Ultrasonic treatment provides a synthesis of non-porous materials and a homogeneous distribution of strengthening particles in the bulk material, thereby increasing the mechanical properties of pure aluminum. It is shown that the increase in the alloy hardness, yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and lower plasticity depend on the average grain size and a greater amount of nanoparticles in the alloy.

This article dwells upon the additive manufacturing of high-energy materials (HEM) with regards to the problems of this technology’s development. This work is aimed at identifying and describing the main problems currently arising in the use of AM for nanostructured high-energy materials and gives an idea of the valuable opportunities that it provides in the hope of promoting further development in this area. Original approaches are proposed for solving one of the main problems in the production of nanostructured HEM—safety and viscosity reduction of the polymer-nanopowder system. Studies have shown an almost complete degree of deagglomeration of microencapsulated aluminum powders. Such powders have the potential to create new systems for safe 3D printing using high-energy materials.

Nanosized Al (nAl) powders offer increased reactivity than the conventional micron-sized counterpart, thanks to their reduced size and increased specific surface area. While desirable from the combustion viewpoint, this high reactivity comes at the cost of difficult handling and implementation of the nanosized powders in preparations. The coating with hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is proposed to improve powder handling and ease of use of nAl and to limit its sensitivity to aging. The nAl/HTPB composite can be an intermediate product for the subsequent manufacturing of mixed high-energy materials while maintaining the qualities and advantages of nAl. In this work, experimental studies of the high-energy mixture nAl/HTPB are carried out. The investigated materials include two composites: nAl (90 wt.%) + HTPB (10 wt.%) and nAl (80 wt.%) + HTPB (20 wt.%). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is performed from 30 to 1000 °C at slow heating rate (10 °C/min) in inert (Ar) and oxidizing (air) environment. The combustion characteristics of propellant formulations loaded with conventional and HTPB-coated nAl are analyzed and discussed. Results show the increased burning rate performance of nAl/HTPB-loaded propellants over the counterpart loaded with micron-sized Al.

In the present study, aluminum alloys of the Al-Mg system with titanium diboride particles of different size distribution were obtained. The introduction of particles in the alloy was carried out using master alloys obtained through self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process. The master alloys consisted of the intermetallic matrix Al-Ti with distributed TiB2 particles. The master alloys with TiB2 particles of different size distribution were introduced in the melt with simultaneous ultrasonic treatment, which allowed the grain refining of the aluminum alloy during subsequent solidification. It was found that the introduction of micro- and nanoparticles TiB2 increased the yield strength, tensile strength, and plasticity of as-cast aluminum alloys. After pass rolling the castings and subsequent annealing, the effect of the presence of particles on the increase of strength properties is much less felt, as compared with the initial alloy. The recrystallization of the structure after pass rolling and annealing was the major contributor to hardening that minimized the effect of dispersion hardening due to the low content of nanosized titanium diboride.
