Rice is an important cereal consumed globally, however, poor germination and non-uniform seedling establishment are major causes of low rice yield in water-limiting arid ecosystems. Seed priming study with KNO3, SA and SiO2 to enhance germination and seedling growth was carried out with the objectives of (1) to determine the effects of seed priming on germination and early seedling growth, and (2) to evaluate effects of seed priming on physiological growth characteristics of rice seedling under drought stress simulated by polyethylene glycol (PEG6000). Under well-watered conditions, rice seeds were primed with concentrations of KNO3 (2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%), SiO2 (2.5%, 3%, 3.5%, 4% and 4.5%) and SA (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 mM). While under drought stress, rice seeds were primed with 2.5% and 5% KNO3; 3% and 3.5% SiO2 and 1 mM and 2.5 mM SA. The results showed that all primed rice seedlings under both well-watered and drought stress conditions had significantly enhanced rice seedling growth parameters of seedling length, plumule length, root length, seedling vigor, seedling biomass and germination index and shorter germination time compared to unprimed controls. However, seed priming with concentrations of 2.5% and 5% KNO3; 3% and 3.5% SiO2, and 1 mM and 2.5 mM SA increased rice seedling growth parameters studied better than other concentrations. However, germination percentage was not significantly affected. Thus, priming of FARO44 rice with these concentrations of chemicals is recommended for fast germination, seedling growth and emergence in arid ecosystems.

Arsenic is considered to be a toxic and heavy metal that exists in drinking water and can lead to acute biotoxicity. Water mimosa (Neptunia oleracea) has been widely identified as a feasible phytoremediator to clean up aquatic systems. In the current study, the phytoremediation potential of water mimosa exposed to different concentrations of sodium heptahydrate arsenate (Na2HAsO4·7H2O) was tested. A number of plant physiological and growth responses such as height of frond, existence of green leaves, relative growth rate, relative water content, tolerance index, decrease in ratio of biomass and ratio of dry weight, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis rate, intercellular CO2 concentrations, stomatal conductance, air pressure deficit, transpiration rate, proline and lipid peroxidation, as well as arsenic accumulation and removal efficacy were analyzed. The micromorphological analysis results confirmed water mimosa’s tolerance of up to 30 ppm of arsenic treatment. The results obtained from the chlorophyll and gas exchange content also showed severe damage by arsenic at doses higher than 30 ppm. In addition, the highest arsenic accumulation and arsenic removal efficacy were observed at the range of 30–60 ppm. An analysis of proline and lipid peroxidation content confirmed water mimosa’s tolerance of up to 30 ppm of arsenic. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and analysis also confirmed the accumulation of arsenic as shown by the deformation of water mimosa tissues. The results showed that water mimosa is a reliable bioremediator for removing arsenic from aquatic systems.

Climate change poses significant challenges to the production of oil palm as its output can be directly affected by abiotic stress, especially drought. Thus, this research was designed to investigate the effect of different water stress regimes on the physiology of oil palm seedlings to determine the optimum amount of water that should be applied. Three-month-old Tenera hybrid (Dura X Pisifera) oil palm seedlings were arranged in randomised completely block design (RCBD) and treated with four irrigation regimes: 100% ER (evapotranspiration replacement; well-watered), 75% ER (moderate water stress), 50% ER (high water stress) and 25% ER (severe water stress). Growth, carbon assimilation and biochemical parameters were recorded during the experiment. The results showed severe water stress decreased vegetative plant growth, leaf water potential, relative water content, leaf moisture content, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, net photosynthesis, water use efficiency and f(v)/f(m) (maximum efficiency of photosystem II). The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline increased under water stress. Regarding irrigation, 100% ER (control) was most effective on most parameters, but there was no significant difference to 75% ER. Thus, to optimise the water utilisation, supplying 75% water from soil field capacity on oil palm seedlings is the best option.

The present study investigated the antioxidant enzyme activities (AEA) of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) as biomarkers of Cu and Pb stress by using Centella asiatica grown in an experimental hydroponic condition. The results showed (i) higher accumulations of Cu and Pb in the roots of C. asiatica than those in the leaves, (ii) synergistic effects of Cu and Pb stress at higher metal-level exposures, and (iii) Cu and Pb stress triggered the increment of APX, CAT, GPX, and SOD levels in both the leaves and roots of C. asiatica. The increment of four AEA indicated that C. asiatica underwent oxidative stress caused by the production of reactive oxygen species when the plant was exposed to Cu and Pb. In order to prevent damages caused by Cu and Pb stress, the AEA system was heightened in C. asiatica, in which APX, CAT, GPX, and SOD can be used as biomarkers of Pb and Cu stress in the plant.
