Energy management is an enabling technology for increasing the economy of fuel cell/battery hybrid electric vehicles. Existing efforts mostly focus on optimization of a certain control objective (e.g., hydrogen consumption), without sufficiently considering the implications for on-board power sources degradation. To address this deficiency, this article proposes a cost-optimal, predictive energy management strategy, with an explicit consciousness of degradation of both fuel cell and battery systems. Specifically, we contribute two main points to the relevant literature, with the purpose of distinguishing our study from existing ones. First, a model predictive control framework, for the first time, is established to minimize the total running cost of a fuel cell/battery hybrid electric bus, inclusive of hydrogen cost and costs caused by fuel cell and battery degradation. The efficacy of this framework is evaluated, accounting for various sizes of prediction horizon and prediction uncertainties. Second, the effects of driving and pricing scenarios on the optimized vehicular economy are explored.

As an important safety critical cyber-physical system (CPS), the braking system is essential to the safe operation of the electric vehicle. Accurate estimation of the brake pressure is of great importance for automotive CPS design and control. In this paper, a novel probabilistic estimation method of brake pressure is developed for electrified vehicles based on multilayer Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) with Levenberg-Marquardt Backpropagation (LMBP) training algorithm. Firstly, the high-level architecture of the proposed multilayer ANN for brake pressure estimation is illustrated. Then, the standard backpropagation (BP) algorithm used for training of the feed-forward neural network (FFNN) is introduced. Based on the basic concept of backpropagation, a more efficient training algorithm of LMBP method is proposed. Next, real vehicle testing is carried out on a chassis dynamometer under standard driving cycles. Experimental data of the vehicle and the powertrain systems are collected, and feature vectors for FFNN training collection are selected. Finally, the developed multilayer ANN is trained using the measured vehicle data, and the performance of the brake pressure estimation is evaluated and compared with other available learning methods. Experimental results validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed ANN-based method for braking pressure estimation under real deceleration scenarios.

Energy management is a critical technology in plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs) for maximizing efficiency, fuel economy, and range, as well as reducing pollutant emissions. At the same time, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has become an effective and important methodology to formulate model-free and realtime energy-management strategies for HEVs and PHEVs. In this article, we describe the energy-management issues of HEVs/PHEVs and summarize a variety of potential DRL applications for onboard energy management. We also discuss the prospects for various DRL approaches in the energy-management field.

This paper proposes a heuristic planning energy management controller, based on a Dyna agent of reinforcement learning (RL) approach, for real-time fuel saving optimization of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The presented method is referred to as the Dyna-H algorithm, which is a model-free online RL algorithm. First, as a case study, a detailed vehicle powertrain modeling of the Chevrolet Volt is built, where all the control components have been experimentally validated. Four traction operation modes are allowed by managing the states of two clutches and one brake. Furthermore, the Dyna-H algorithm is introduced via incorporating a heuristic planning strategy into a Dyna agent. This is the first time to apply the Dyna-H algorithm in the energy management field of PHEVs. Finally, a comparative analysis of the one-step Q-learning, Dyna, and Dyna-H algorithms is conducted in simulations. Numerous testing results indicate that the proposed algorithm leads to definite improvements in equiv-alent fuel economy and computational speed.

Advanced algorithms can promote the development of energy management strategies (EMSs) as a key technology in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Reinforcement learning (RL) with distributed structure can significantly improve training efficiency in complex environments, and multi-threaded parallel computing provides a reliable algorithm basis for promoting adaptability. Dedicated to trying more efficient deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms, this paper proposed a deep q-network (DQN)-based energy and emission management strategy (E&EMS) at first. Then, two distributed DRL algorithms, namely asynchronous advantage actor-critic (A3C) and distributed proximal policy optimization (DPPO), were adopted to propose EMSs, respectively. Finally, emission optimization was taken into account and then distributed DRL-based E&EMSs were proposed. Regarding dynamic programming (DP) as the optimal benchmark, simulation results show that three DRL-based control strategies can achieve near-optimal fuel economy and outstanding computational efficiency, and compared with DQN, two distributed DRL algorithms have improved the learning efficiency by four times.
