Grassland biomass is essential for maintaining grassland ecosystems. Moreover, biomass is an important characteristic of grassland. In this study, we combined field sampling with remote sensing data and calculated five vegetation indices (VIs). Using this combined information, we quantified a remote sensing estimation model and estimated biomass in a temperate grassland of northern China. We also explored the dynamic spatio-temporal variation of biomass from 2006 to 2012. Our results indicated that all VIs investigated in the study were strongly correlated with biomass (α < 0.01). The precision of the model for estimating biomass based on ground data and remote sensing was greater than 73%. Additionally, the results of our analysis indicated that the annual average biomass was 11.86 million tons and that the average yield was 604.5 kg/ha. The distribution of biomass exhibited substantial spatial heterogeneity, and the biomass decreased from the eastern portion of the study area to the western portion. The interannual biomass exhibited strong fluctuations during 2006–2012, with a coefficient of variation of 26.95%. The coefficient of variation of biomass differed among the grassland types. The highest coefficient of variation was found for the desert steppe, followed by the typical steppe and the meadow steppe.

The precise and rapid estimation of grassland biomass is an important scientific issue in grassland ecosystem research. In this study, based on a field survey of 1205 sites together with biomass data of the Xilingol grassland for the years 2005–2012 and the “accumulated” MODIS productivity starting from the beginning of growing season, we built regression models to estimate the aboveground biomass of the Xilingol grassland during the growing season, then further analyzed the overall condition of the grassland and the spatial and temporal distribution of the aboveground biomass. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The unitary linear model based on the field survey data and “accumulated” MODIS productivity data is the optimum model for estimating the aboveground biomass of the Xilingol grassland during the growing period, with the model accuracy reaching 69%; (2) The average aboveground biomass in the Xilingol grassland for the years 2005–2012 was estimated to be 14.35 Tg, and the average aboveground biomass density was estimated to be 71.32 g∙m−2; (3) The overall variation in the aboveground biomass showed a decreasing trend from the eastern meadow grassland to the western desert grassland; (4) There were obvious fluctuations in the aboveground biomass of the Xilingol grassland for the years 2005–2012, ranging from 10.56–17.54 Tg. Additionally, several differences in the interannual changes in aboveground biomass were observed among the various types of grassland. Large variations occurred in the temperate meadow-steppe and the typical grassland; whereas there was little change in the temperate desert-steppe and temperate steppe-desert.

Land use/land cover change (LUCC) is the most direct driving force of landscape pattern change. The Zoige Plateau is a natural ecosystem with the largest high-altitude swamp wetland in China and its land use pattern has undergone great changes in recent years, but how the changes of each land use type affect the landscape pattern is uncertain. Here, we used the object-oriented method to extract land use information in 2015. Then, combined with land use data, the land use change characteristics from 2000 to 2015 were analyzed. We used the correlation analysis method to analyze the effects of land use changes on landscape pattern systematically. Three key conclusions were reached. (1) Land use information for the Zoige Plateau could be extracted with high accuracy by combining the object-oriented method and support vector machine (SVM). The overall accuracy was 93.2% and the Kappa coefficient was 0.889. (2) The comprehensive dynamic degree of land use was the highest from 2010 to 2015. From 2000 to 2015, the wetland area decreased the fastest because 57.05% of the wetlands were transferred out. Construction land increased the fastest, and the transferred in area from grassland and farmland were the main reason. (3) The effects of unused land, farmland, and construction land on the overall landscape pattern were stronger than that of the other types, among which farmland had the most significant impact (with a correlation coefficient of 0.959, p < 0.001). The change of unused land was the most highly significant factor associated with the landscape area pattern, and both the water body and unused land showed strong correlations with landscape shape pattern change. This suggested that the effects of land use types occupying a relatively small area on the landscape pattern were intensified. This study will provide guidance for the environmental management of local land resources and other natural ecosystem areas.

The grassland vegetation green-up date helps to initiate the start of grassland grazing and is an important scientific issue in grassland phenology research. This study examined green-up in the Xilingol grasslands of northern China. A double logistic function was used to reconstruct a time series of Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre Vegetation (SPOT Vegetation) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from 1999 to 2012. The dynamic threshold method was used to monitor the green-up date via remote sensing. The study found that green-up dates occurred between early April and mid-May in most areas. Sample plots indicated that 68% of ground monitoring results were consistent with the remotely sensed green-up date. The root mean square error of the green-up date measured via remote sensing was 8.7 days. The results are summarized as follows. (1) The green-up date of temperate desert grassland usually occurred around the first half of April but could be quite variable (standard deviation = 28.65 days). The green-up date of temperate grassland usually occurred in mid- to late April, and was somewhat variable (standard deviation = 18.45 days). The green-up date of temperate meadow grassland usually occurred in late April or early May with little variability (standard deviation = 12.97 days). (2) Linear trend analyses showed that only 13.9% of the pixels exhibited significant changes over the 14-year time series. However, the linear trend increased from the southeast to the northwest, with 57% of pixels demonstrating earlier green-up. Across the region, the linear trend exhibited an average rate of change of – 1.5 days 10 year–1. In addition, we discuss correlations between green-up dates and meteorological factors at eight meteorological stations and analyse partial correlation coefficients between green-up dates and meteorological factors. The correlations measured at seven meteorological stations were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The average correlative value of deterministic factors was 0.54. The partial correlation coefficients between green-up date and temperature prior to seedling establishment were negative at five stations, but this relationship was significant at only three stations. Partial correlation coefficients between green-up date and precipitation prior to seedling establishment were negative at all eight stations, of which five relationships were significant.

Tibet, the largest region of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, is undergoing extensive grassland deterioration and desertification due to both human and natural factors. Alpine meadow and grassland restoration is difficult after degradation; consequently, the desertification of the Tibetan grassland has attracted substantial social attention. This article considered Amdo, Baingoin, Coqên, and Zhongba counties in Tibet as the study areas, employed remote-sensing data, and developed Tibetan grassland desertification classification indices based on field surveys. Moreover, this study used spectral mixture analysis (SMA) methods to interpret remote-sensing image data from the study areas during three periods (1990, 2000, and 2009) and considered the bare sand (gravel) area proportion as the main basis for the evaluation of grassland desertification. The results of this study demonstrate that the slightly, moderately, and severely desertified grasslands of the monitoring zone covered a total area of 114,113.16 km2 in 1990, accounting for 82.12% of the study area. The area exhibited no change in 2000 and decreased by 4472.31 km2 in 2009. The severely desertified grassland area declined from 1990 to 2009. The degree of grassland desertification in these four Tibetan counties diminished from 1990 to 2009, and the grassland desertification area exhibited a gradual reduction during the same period. Regarding other soil coverage types, the ice and snow area markedly changed and declined to approximately one-third of its original extent during these 20 years, and most of the ice and snow area was converted to bare land and various types of desertified grassland.
