Grassland biomass is essential for maintaining grassland ecosystems. Moreover, biomass is an important characteristic of grassland. In this study, we combined field sampling with remote sensing data and calculated five vegetation indices (VIs). Using this combined information, we quantified a remote sensing estimation model and estimated biomass in a temperate grassland of northern China. We also explored the dynamic spatio-temporal variation of biomass from 2006 to 2012. Our results indicated that all VIs investigated in the study were strongly correlated with biomass (α < 0.01). The precision of the model for estimating biomass based on ground data and remote sensing was greater than 73%. Additionally, the results of our analysis indicated that the annual average biomass was 11.86 million tons and that the average yield was 604.5 kg/ha. The distribution of biomass exhibited substantial spatial heterogeneity, and the biomass decreased from the eastern portion of the study area to the western portion. The interannual biomass exhibited strong fluctuations during 2006–2012, with a coefficient of variation of 26.95%. The coefficient of variation of biomass differed among the grassland types. The highest coefficient of variation was found for the desert steppe, followed by the typical steppe and the meadow steppe.

The precise and rapid estimation of grassland biomass is an important scientific issue in grassland ecosystem research. In this study, based on a field survey of 1205 sites together with biomass data of the Xilingol grassland for the years 2005–2012 and the “accumulated” MODIS productivity starting from the beginning of growing season, we built regression models to estimate the aboveground biomass of the Xilingol grassland during the growing season, then further analyzed the overall condition of the grassland and the spatial and temporal distribution of the aboveground biomass. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The unitary linear model based on the field survey data and “accumulated” MODIS productivity data is the optimum model for estimating the aboveground biomass of the Xilingol grassland during the growing period, with the model accuracy reaching 69%; (2) The average aboveground biomass in the Xilingol grassland for the years 2005–2012 was estimated to be 14.35 Tg, and the average aboveground biomass density was estimated to be 71.32 g∙m−2; (3) The overall variation in the aboveground biomass showed a decreasing trend from the eastern meadow grassland to the western desert grassland; (4) There were obvious fluctuations in the aboveground biomass of the Xilingol grassland for the years 2005–2012, ranging from 10.56–17.54 Tg. Additionally, several differences in the interannual changes in aboveground biomass were observed among the various types of grassland. Large variations occurred in the temperate meadow-steppe and the typical grassland; whereas there was little change in the temperate desert-steppe and temperate steppe-desert.

Land use/land cover change (LUCC) is the most direct driving force of landscape pattern change. The Zoige Plateau is a natural ecosystem with the largest high-altitude swamp wetland in China and its land use pattern has undergone great changes in recent years, but how the changes of each land use type affect the landscape pattern is uncertain. Here, we used the object-oriented method to extract land use information in 2015. Then, combined with land use data, the land use change characteristics from 2000 to 2015 were analyzed. We used the correlation analysis method to analyze the effects of land use changes on landscape pattern systematically. Three key conclusions were reached. (1) Land use information for the Zoige Plateau could be extracted with high accuracy by combining the object-oriented method and support vector machine (SVM). The overall accuracy was 93.2% and the Kappa coefficient was 0.889. (2) The comprehensive dynamic degree of land use was the highest from 2010 to 2015. From 2000 to 2015, the wetland area decreased the fastest because 57.05% of the wetlands were transferred out. Construction land increased the fastest, and the transferred in area from grassland and farmland were the main reason. (3) The effects of unused land, farmland, and construction land on the overall landscape pattern were stronger than that of the other types, among which farmland had the most significant impact (with a correlation coefficient of 0.959, p < 0.001). The change of unused land was the most highly significant factor associated with the landscape area pattern, and both the water body and unused land showed strong correlations with landscape shape pattern change. This suggested that the effects of land use types occupying a relatively small area on the landscape pattern were intensified. This study will provide guidance for the environmental management of local land resources and other natural ecosystem areas.

Light detection and range (LiDAR) intensity is an important feature describing the characteristics of a target. The direct use of original intensity values has limitations for users, because the same objects may have different spectra, while different objects may have similar spectra in the overlapping regions of airborne LiDAR intensity data. The incidence angle and range constitute the geometric configuration of the airborne measurement system, which has an important influence on the LiDAR intensity. Considering positional shift and rotation angle deviation of the laser scanner and the inertial measurement unit (IMU), a new method for calculating the incident angle is presented based on the rigorous geometric measurement model for airborne LiDAR. The improved approach was applied to experimental intensity data of two forms from a RIEGL laser scanner system mounted on a manned aerial platform. The results showed that the variation coefficient of the intensity values after correction in homogeneous regions is lower than that obtained before correction. The overall classification accuracy of the corrected intensity data of the first form (amplitude) is significantly improved by 30.01%, and the overall classification accuracy of the corrected intensity data of second form (reflectance) increased by 18.21%. The results suggest that the correction method is applicable to other airborne LiDAR systems. Corrected intensity values can be better used for classification, especially in more refined target recognition scenarios, such as road mark extraction and forest monitoring. This study provides useful guidance for the development of future LiDAR data processing systems.

The Grain for Green Project (GGP) is a major national initiative aimed at ecological improvement and vegetation restoration in China, achieving substantial ecological and socio-economic benefits. Nevertheless, research on vegetation cover trends and the long-term restoration efficacy of the GGP in the Loess Plateau remains limited. This study examines the temporal–spatial evolution and sustainability of vegetation cover in this region, using NDVI data from Landsat (2000–2022) with medium-high spatial resolution. The analytical methods involve Sen’s slope, Mann–Kendall non-parametric test, and Hurst exponent to assess trends and forecast sustainability. The findings reveal that between 2000 and 2022, vegetation coverage in the Loess Plateau increased by an average of 0.86% per year (p < 0.01), marked by high vegetation cover expansion (173 × 103 km2, 26.49%) and low vegetation cover reduction (149 × 103 km2, 22.83%). The spatial pattern exhibited a northwest-to-southeast gradient, with a transition from low to high coverage levels, reflecting a persistent increase in high vegetation cover and decrease in low vegetation cover. Approximately 93% of the vegetation cover in the Loess Plateau showed significant improvement, while 5% (approximately 31 × 103 km2) displayed a degradation trend, mainly in the urbanized and Yellow River Basin regions. Projections suggest that 90% of vegetation cover will continue to improve. In GGP-targeted areas, high and medium-high levels of vegetation cover increased significantly at rates of 0.456 ×103 km2/year and 0.304 × 103 km2/year, respectively, with approximately 75% of vegetation cover levels exhibiting positive trends. This study reveals the effectiveness of the GGP in promoting vegetation restoration in the Loess Plateau, offering valuable insights for vegetation recovery research and policy implementation in other ecologically fragile regions.

The continuous growth of the economy and population have promoted increasing consumption of natural resources, and raised concerns regarding the upper limits of the terrestrial ecosystems with biomass accessible for humanity. Here, human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) was employed to assess the influence of human activities on terrestrial net primary production (NPP), and a detailed method was introduced to simulate the magnitude and trends of HANPP in the Yangtze River Delta. The results showed that the total HANPP of the Yangtze River Delta increased from 102.3 Tg C yr−1 to 142.2 Tg C yr−1, during 2005–2015, with an average of 121.3 Tg C yr−1. NPP changes induced by harvest (HANPPharv) made the dominant contribution of 79.9% to the total HANPP, and the increase of HANPPharv in cropland was the main driver of total HANPP growth, which was significantly correlated with the improvement in agricultural production conditions, such as total agricultural machinery power and effective irrigation area. The proportion of HANPP ranged from 59.3% to 72.4% of potential NPP during 2005–2015 in the Yangtze River Delta, and distinguishable differences in the proportions were found among the four provinces in the Yangtze River Delta. Shanghai had the largest proportion of 84.3%, while Zhejiang had the lowest proportion of 32.0%.
