Noise pollution caused by vehicular traffic is a common problem in urban environments that has been shown to affect people's health and children's cognition. In the last decade, several studies have been conducted to assess this noise, by measuring the equivalent noise pressure level (called L _eq ) to acquire an accurate sound map using wireless networks with acoustic sensors. However, even with similar values of L _eq , people can feel the noise differently according to its frequency characteristics. Thus, indexes, which can express people's feelings by subjective measures, are required. In this paper, we analyze the suitability of using the psychoacoustic metrics given by the Zwicker's model, instead of just only considering L _eq . The goal is to evaluate the hardware limitations of a low-cost wireless acoustic sensor network that is used to measure the annoyance, using two types of commercial and off-the-shelf sensor nodes, Tmote-Invent nodes and Raspberry Pi platforms. Moreover, to calculate the parameters using these platforms, different simplifications to the Zwicker's model based on the specific features of road traffic noise are proposed. To validate the different alternatives, the aforementioned nodes are tested in a traffic congested area of Valencia City in a vertical and horizontal network deployment. Based on the results, it is observed that the Raspberry Pi platforms are a feasible low-cost alternative to increase the spatial-temporal resolution, whereas Tmote-Invent nodes do not confirm their suitability due to their limited memory and calibration issues.

The proliferation and great variety of low-cost air quality (AQ) sensors, combined with their flexibility and energy efficiency, gives an opportunity to integrate them into Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). However, with these sensors, AQ monitoring poses a significant challenge, as the data collection and analysis process is complex and prone to errors. Although these sensors do not meet the performance requirements for reference regulatory-equivalent monitoring, they can provide informative measurements and more if we can adjust and add further processing to their raw measurements. Therefore, the integration of these sensors aims to facilitate real-time monitoring and achieve a higher spatial and temporal sampling density, particularly in urban areas, where there is a strong interest in providing AQ surveillance services since there is an increase in respiratory/allergic issues among the population. Leveraging a network of low-cost sensors, supported by 5G communications in combination with Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques (using Convolutional and Deep Neural Networks (CNN and DNN)) to predict 24-h-ahead readings is the goal of this article in order to be able to provide early warnings to the populations of hazards areas. We have evaluated four different neural network architectures: Multi-Linear prediction (with a dense Multi-Linear Neural Network (NN)), Multi-Dense network prediction, Multi-Convolutional network prediction, and Multi-Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network prediction. To perform the training of the prediction of the readings, we have prepared a significant dataset that is analyzed and processed for training and testing, achieving an estimation error for most of the predicted parameters of around 7.2% on average, with the best option being the Multi-LSTM network in the forthcoming 24 h. It is worth mentioning that some pollutants achieved lower estimation errors, such as CO2 with 0.1%, PM10 with 2.4% (as well as PM2.5 and PM1.0), and NO2 with 6.7%.

In this paper four wireless sensor network operating systems are compared in terms of power consumption. The analysis takes into account the most common operating systems—TinyOS v1.0, TinyOS v2.0, Mantis and Contiki—running on Tmote Sky and MICAz devices. With the objective of ensuring a fair evaluation, a benchmark composed of four applications has been developed, covering the most typical tasks that a Wireless Sensor Network performs. The results show the instant and average current consumption of the devices during the execution of these applications. The experimental measurements provide a good insight into the power mode in which the device components are running at every moment, and they can be used to compare the performance of different operating systems executing the same tasks.

Indoor RF-based localization using fingerprint mapping requires an initial training step, which represents a time consuming process. This location methodology needs a database conformed with RSSI (Radio Signal Strength Indicator) measures from the communication transceivers taken at specific locations within the localization area. But, the real world localization environment is dynamic and it is necessary to rebuild the fingerprint database when some environmental changes are made. This paper explores the use of different interpolation functions to complete the fingerprint mapping needed to achieve the sought accuracy, thereby reducing the effort in the training step. Also, different distributions of test maps and reference points have been evaluated, showing the validity of this proposal and necessary trade-offs. Results reported show that the same or similar localization accuracy can be achieved even when only 50% of the initial fingerprint reference points are taken.

EU Directive 49/2002 and Spanish law 37/2006 urge cities to develop strategic noise maps and action plans to evaluate noise exposure and to establish noise abatement procedures in critical areas. However, noise mapping involves costly and cumbersome measurement procedures that can become a real issue in practice. This paper describes a distributed noise monitoring system based on WASN (Wireless Acoustic Sensor Network) and the application of a geo-statistical methodology for statistical spatial-temporal prediction of noise levels in semi-open areas, such as a typical, small Mediterranean city (Algemesí, València, Spain). This methodology is applied to the study of the spatial evolution in time of the noise pollution. To this end, a spatial statistical model is developed by using the noise pollution measurements obtained over a set of points located at some strategic locations. The geo-statistical time model allows for estimating specific noise levels and characterizing the spatial-temporal variation of the noise pollution. The results show that the developed model provides a good approximation of the measurements obtained experimentally.

Wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASNs) are known for their potential applications in multiple areas, such as audio-based surveillance, binaural hearing aids or advanced acoustic monitoring. The knowledge of the spatial position of a source of interest is usually a requirement for many of these applications. Therefore, source localization is an important problem to be addressed in WASNs. Unfortunately, most localization algorithms need costly signal processing stages that prevent them from being implemented in low-cost sensor networks, requiring additional modules for signal acquisition and processing. This paper presents a low-complexity method for acoustic event detection and localization considering a change detection statistical framework. Two possible implementation approaches based on the efficient cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm are presented and discussed. Results from simulations and a real deployment show that the proposed techniques can be easily implemented in low-cost sensor networks, providing good localization accuracy and making good use of the available node resources.
