The effects of heat treatments on microstructure and basic mechanical properties of selective laser melted (SLM) TC4 titanium alloy were investigated in detail. The results demonstrated that a lot of acicular α/α′ and β phases exist in the SLM TC4 titanium alloy. With the increase in the aging treatment temperature, the metastable α′ phase of SLM TC4 was decomposed into α + β laths. Moreover, the α/α′ phase and β phase grew coarser, leading to a gradual decrease in strength, that is, plasticity and hardness increased and decreased, respectively. In terms of solid-solution aging treatment, the β phase was transformed into the α′ martensite phase in the solid-solution treatment, and the aging treatment induced the decomposition of the metastable α′ phase into α + β laths. The strength and hardness of SLM TC4 alloy increased as the temperature increased. The optimal mechanical properties could be obtained by water quenching after holding at 960 ℃ for 1 h and then air cooling after holding at 600 °C for 8 h.
Bamboo is known as a typical kind of functional gradient natural composite. In this paper, fiber bundles were extracted manually from various parts of the stem in the radial direction, namely the outer, middle, and inner parts. After heat treatment, the mechanical properties of the fiber bundles were studied, including the tensile strength, elastic modulus, and fracture modes. The micromechanical properties of the fiber cell walls were also analyzed. The results showed that the mean tensile strength of the bamboo fiber bundles decreased from 423.29 to 191.61 MPa and the modulus of elasticity increased from 21.29 GPa to 27.43 GPa with the increase in temperature. The elastic modulus and hardness of the fiber cell walls showed a positive correlation with temperature, with the modulus of elasticity and the hardness increasing from 15.96 to 18.70 GPa and 0.36 to 0.47 GPa, respectively. From the outside to the inside of the bamboo stems, the tensile strength and elastic modulus showed a slight decrease. The fracture behavior of the fiber bundles near the outside approximates ductile fracture, while that of the bundles near to the inside tend to be a brittle fracture. The fracture surfaces of the bamboo bundles and the single fibers became smoother after heat treatment. The results show that bamboo fiber bundles distributed near the outside are most suitable for industrial development under heat treatment at 180 °C. Therefore, this study can provide a reasonable scientific basis for the selective utilization, functional optimization, and bionic utilization of bamboo materials, which has very important theoretical and practical significance.
The electron beam welding process is widely used in the connection among titanium alloy material parts of aero-engines. Its mechanical properties need to meet the requirements of long life and high reliability. In this paper, the static strength and the fatigue failure behavior of the electron beam weldments of TC17 titanium alloy were investigated experimentally under low amplitude high frequency (20 kHz), and the mechanical response and failure mechanism under different external loading conditions were analyzed. In summary, the samples were found to have anisotropic microstructure. The tensile strength of the PWHT of TC17 EBW joint was ~4.5% lower than that of the base metal. Meanwhile, compared with the base metal, the fatigue strength was reduced by 45.5% at 109 cycles of fatigue life. The fracture analysis showed that the fatigue failure of the welded joint of TC17 alloy was caused by the welded pores and the fatigue cracks initiated from the welded pores. A fine granular area (FGA) was observed around the crack initiation region. The existence of pores caused the stress intensity factor of the fine granular area (KFGA) to be inversely proportional to the fatigue life. The KFGA calculation formula was modified and the fatigue crack propagation threshold of the welded joint of TC17 alloy was calculated (3.62 MPa·m1/2). Moreover, the influences of the effective size and the relative depth of the pores on the very long fatigue life of the electron beam welded joint of TC17 titanium alloy were discussed.

Ultrasonic fatigue tests were performed on Ti60 titanium alloy up to a very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime at various stress ratios to investigate the characteristics. The S-N curves showed continuous declining trends with fatigue limits of 400, 144 and 130 MPa at 109 cycles corresponding to stress ratios of R = −1, 0.1 and 0.3, respectively. Fatigue cracks found to be initiated from the subsurface of the specimens in the VHCF regime, especially at high stress ratios. Two modified fatigue life prediction models based on fatigue crack initiation mechanisms for Ti60 titanium alloy in the VHCF regime were developed which showed good agreement with the experimental data.
