The crucial roles of soil carbon (C) and nutrients and their stoichiometric characteristics in indicating the soil interior nutrient cycling and plant nutrient supply of forest ecosystems have been widely verified, whereas it has been less explored when considering the influencing factors regionally, especially for the widely cultivated plantation tree species. In the current study, the patterns of soil organic C (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) stoichiometry in Chinese fir [Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook] plantations across subtropical China were analyzed, and their influencing factors were also investigated. The results showed that the range of SOC: TN (C:N), SOC: TP (C:P), and TN: TP (N:P) ratios were 7.32–18.27, 20.15–230.48, and 2.11–15.05 with a mean value of 13.22, 83.50, and 6.05, respectively. Well-constrained correlations were found in SOC and TN, as well as in TN and TP. Soil TN and TP contents increased with increasing altitude, whereas soil C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios decreased. Soil TP content decreased, and the C:P ratio increased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT) and annual total solar radiation (ATSR). Soil C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios increased with increased mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual evaporation (MAE). Overall, our findings suggested that the soil nutrient supply is relatively adequate in Chinese fir plantations across subtropical China. Meanwhile, soil C, N, and P stoichiometric characteristics were affected by geographical and climatic variables to different degrees.

Plant secondary metabolism is complex in its diverse chemical composition and dynamic regulation of biosynthesis. How the functional diversification of enzymes contributes to the diversity is largely unknown. In the flavonoids pathway, dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR) is a key enzyme mediating dihydroflavanol into anthocyanins biosynthesis. Here, the DFR homolog was identified from Camellia nitidissima Chi. (CnDFR) which is a unique species of the genus Camellia with golden yellow petals. Sequence analysis showed that CnDFR possessed not only conserved catalytic domains, but also some amino acids peculiar to Camellia species. Gene expression analysis revealed that CnDFR was expressed in all tissues and the expression of CnDFR was positively correlated with polyphenols but negatively with yellow coloration. The subcellular localization of CnDFR by the tobacco infiltration assay showed a likely dual localization in the nucleus and cell membrane. Furthermore, overexpression transgenic lines were generated in tobacco to understand the molecular function of CnDFR. The analyses of metabolites suggested that ectopic expression of CnDFR enhanced the biosynthesis of polyphenols, while no accumulation of anthocyanins was detected. These results indicate a functional diversification of the reductase activities in Camellia plants and provide molecular insights into the regulation of floral color.

Leaf nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry at a large geographical scale is the result of long-term adaptation to the environment. Therefore, the patterns of leaf N and P spatial distributions and their controlling factors represent an important issue in current ecological research. To explore the leaf stoichiometry of Chinese fir at a national level, we conducted a meta-analysis based on the dataset of the leaf nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and the N:P ratio from 28 study sites across China. For all of the age groups considered, the average concentrations of the leaf N and P concentrations and the N:P ratio were 11.94 mg g−1, 1.04 mg g−1, and 12.93, respectively. Significant differences were found in the leaf P concentration and N:P ratio between the five age groups, while the differences in the leaf N concentration between the groups were not significant. Linear fitting results indicated that the leaf P concentration decreased, and the leaf N:P ratio increased with the increase of the MAT (mean annual temperature) and soil N concentration. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the first axis, with an explanatory quantity of 0.350, indicated that the MAT (mean annual temperature), soil nitrogen concentration and stand age had a good relationship with the leaf P concentration and N:P ratio, while the second axis, with an explanatory quantity of 0.058, indicated that the leaf N concentration was less affected by the environmental factors. These results demonstrate that the leaf P concentration and N:P ratio are affected by the stand age, an uneven distribution of the heat and soil nutrient concentration status, and N, as the limiting element, remaining relatively stable. Overall, our findings revealed the response of leaf stoichiometric traits to environment change, which benefits the management of Chinese fir plantations.

Soil and climatic conditions are known to have close associations with plant morphological and stoichiometric traits at a regional scale along latitudinal gradients; however, how latitude drives biotic and abiotic factors affecting plant nutrient acquisition to accommodate environmental nutrient deficiency remains unclear. We quantified soil, root, leaf, and leaf litter nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations to determine the potentially limiting nutrient and the simultaneous responses of root capture and leaf resorption to nutrient deficiency in seven Quercus acutissima forests across the North–South Transect of Eastern China. The results showed that the mean leaf and root N:P ratios in Q. acutissima were 21.58 and 20.23, respectively, which markedly exceeded the P limitation threshold of 16 for terrestrial plants. The mean leaf litter N and P were 10.63 mg/g and 0.51 mg/g, respectively, indicating that P resorption proficiency was relatively higher than N resorption proficiency. N displayed higher stoichiometric homeostasis than P in the leaf. The leaf and root N:P ratios showed a quadratic variation that first decreased and then increased as latitude increased, whereas the phosphorus resorption efficiency and root-soil accumulation factor of P displayed the opposite trend. Partial least square path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis demonstrated that root nutrient capture and leaf nutrient resorption were regulated by different influential factors. Overall, these findings provide new insights into plant strategies to adapt to environmental nutrient deficiency, as well as the scientific basis for predicting the spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient acquisition in the context of climate change.

Halophytes play a crucial role in the ecological restoration of saline and alkaline land and hold promising benefits to food security in China. Although a variety of aspects of halophytes have been extensively addressed, there is still a lack of overall understanding of the leaf nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometric characteristics, especially at a national scale. We compiled a national dataset of 311 observations from 113 sampling sites across China to explore the changing trends and influencing factors on leaf N and P concentrations, and N:P ratio of halophytes. The results showed that leaf N concentration decreased significantly with increasing latitude (LAT), which was mainly driven by the mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP). The leaf P concentration increased remarkably with increasing longitude (LON), which was induced by the variation in soil total P (TP) content. The leaf N:P ratio increased as LAT increased and LON decreased, which was potentially regulated by the MAT, MAP, and soil TP content. The scaling exponents of the N-P relationship differed significantly among halophyte types and were 0.40, 0.87, and 1.39 for euhalophyte, pseudohalophyte, and recretohalophyte, respectively. The leaf N concentration exhibited significant differences among ecosystem types and halophyte types, whereas the leaf P concentration and N:P ratio remained relatively stable. In summary, the leaf N concentration and N-P scaling exponent might be the classification criteria for halophyte types from the perspective of plant nutrient resource allocation. Moreover, this study characterized the spatial distribution and allocation strategy of leaf N and P stoichiometry in halophytes by data integration analysis, providing the basic information for nutrient management in the processes of the future domestication and introduction of halophytes.
