In this study, a TRNSYS model for a solar‐assisted heat pump (SAHP) water heating system for a university bathroom in Xi'an was developed and validated through experimental measurements. Under the typical meteorological conditions in Xi'an, a comparative analysis of the performance of the serial indirect expansion SAHP (IDX‐SAHP) system and the parallel IDX‐SAHP system during different seasons was conducted using the validated model. The results demonstrated that for annual operation, the parallel IDX‐SAHP system showed better performance in the Xi'an district compared to the serial system. Under the same heating load, the average coefficient of performance (COP) of the serial IDX‐SAHP system was 3.23 and that of the parallel IDX‐SAHP system was 4.34. In particular, during summer and the transition season, the parallel IDX‐SAHP system showed large advantages, mainly owing to a larger part of the heating load being provided by the solar collector. However, the serial IDX‐SAHP system showed a higher efficiency than that of the parallel IDX‐SAHP system during winter conditions.

This study proposed a combined solar-assisted heat pump (SAHP) system that could operate in the serial mode or parallel mode. For this proposed system, a stable year-round operation could be achieved without the assistance of electric heating or low-temperature heat pump. By analyzing the heat balance equations, a correlation of the combined SAHP system for the two modes switched was obtained, which provided a theoretical basis for the optimal operation of this system. In addition, the performance of the proposed system applied in a university bathroom in Xi’an district was investigated using TRNSYS. The results illustrated that compared to the serial and parallel systems, the proposed system exhibited a good performance on energy efficiency. The annual average coefficient of performance (COP) of the proposed system was 5.7, obviously higher than those of the serial system and the parallel system, which were 3.3 and 4.3, respectively. Therefore, the results in this study could provide the theoretical guidance and reference for practical engineering design.

The combined mine backfill–geothermal (CMBG) system can be used to effectively extract geothermal energy by installing a heat exchange tube (HET) in the underground backfilled stopes of mines, which can be used as the heat supply for buildings in mines and the surrounding areas. The efficient performance of this system strongly depends on the thermal exchange process between the HET and its surrounding cemented paste backfill body (CPB). In this study, a validated simulation model is established to investigate the heat exchange performance of CPB, in which the nonuniformly distributed thermal properties in CPB are fully considered. The results indicate that the increase in the porosity has a negative effect on the heat exchange performance of CPB. With the increase in the porosity, the decreased rate of the conductive heat transfer in CPB could be up to approximately 18%. In conditions with seepage flow, the heat transfer capacity of CPB could be effectively improved. Generally, a higher hydraulic conductivity corresponds to a higher heat transfer performance of CPB. When the seepage velocity rose from 2 × 10−6 to 6 × 10−6 m/s, the thermal conductivity of CPB achieved a 114% increase from 1.843 to 3.957 W/(m·K). Furthermore, it was found that the thermal energy accumulates along the seepage flow direction, enhancing the thermal influencing radius of the HET in this direction. Thus, the arrangement of HETs should fully take into account the seepage flow effect. This proposed simulation model could provide a reference for parameter determination and optimization of CMBG systems.

The increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is a major factor contributing to climate change. CO2 storage in coal goaf is a convenient, effective, and economical solution. Methods to quickly and effectively evaluate geological conditions are urgently required. The main influencing factors are geological safety, storage potential, economics, and environmental protection; these include 4 aspects, 38 indexes, and 4 index levels that can be quantified using classification levels. We established a geological evaluation model, using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and weighted interval methods. AHP was used to determine its elements, indicators, and inter-layer relationships, as well as to clarify its structural relationships. The weight interval method is used to evaluate unstable elements, reducing their difficulty, and constant values are used to assign weights of stable elements to increase accuracy. This model was applied to assess the suitability of the goaf in Yaojie mine for geological CO2 storage. The results revealed that this goaf is an above average CO2 storage space, which was consistent with previous research. This geological CO2 storage evaluation model may also be used to assess the CO2 storage suitability of other coal goafs.
