A sensitivity study was conducted for three typical expander-based transcritical CO2 cycles with the developed simulation model, and the sensitivities of the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) to the key operating parameters, including the inlet pressure of gas cooler, the temperatures at evaporator inlet and gas cooler outlet, the inter-stage pressure and the isentropic efficiency of expander, were obtained. The results showed that the sensitivity to the gas cooler inlet pressure differs greatly before and after the optimal gas cooler inlet pressure. The sensitivity to the intercooler outlet temperature in the two-stage cycles increases sharply to near zero and then keeps almost constant at intercooler outlet temperature of higher than 45 °C. However, the sensitivity stabilizes near zero when the evaporator inlet temperature is very low of −26.1 °C. In two-stage compression with an intercooler and an expander assisting in driving the first-stage compressor (TEADFC) cycle, an abrupt change in the sensitivity of maximum COP to the inter-stage pressure was observed, but disappeared after intercooler outlet temperature exceeds 50 °C. The sensitivity of maximum COP to the expander isentropic efficiency increases almost linearly with the expander isentropic efficiency.

The aim of this study was to examine the microstructure of cemented paste backfill (CPB) during its development and relate the characteristics of the microstructure to the physical and mechanical properties of CPB. The geometry and morphology of the microstructures of CPB were observed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characteristics including pore size, pore shape, and orientation of the microstructures of CPB at different curing times were analyzed based on the SEM images. The porosity, fractal dimension, and probability entropy were characterized using the Particles and Pore Recognition and Analysis System (PPRAS). It was found that the pore size, pore shape, and orientation of the microstructure of CPB significantly change as the curing time increases, resulting in the increase of UCS. Meanwhile, the arrangement of the pores affects the mechanical properties of CPB. At the early age of CPB development, the probability entropy is above 0.96, indicating a chaotic pore distribution and no obvious orientation. At the late age of CPB development, the probability entropy becomes smaller and the order and orientation of the pore distribution are enhanced, leading to an increase in USC. The UCS of CPB is also greatly affected by the characteristics of the pore morphology. During the development of CPB, the pore shape becomes smoother. The UCS of CPB approximately linearly improves with an increase in the average roundness of pores.

In order to consider the influence of mesoscopic characteristics of materials on the constitutive model of cemented paste backfill (CPB), the uniaxial compression variables and the damage constitutive model, considering the influence of porosity and pore size of filling materials, were derived based on the strain equivalence principle and Weibull probability distribution function. The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests and unconfined compression strength (UCS) tests were carried out on 8 groups of CPB specimens with different slurry concentrations and cement‐tailings ratios. Then, the expression of damage strengthening coefficient is determined, and the stress‐strain curves measured by the theoretical model were compared with the experimental ones. The results show that the uniaxial compression constitutive model proposed is in good agreement with UCS test results and can effectively describe the damage evolution law and the development process of stress‐strain curve of CPB under uniaxial compression. The 28‐day compressive strength of CPB can reach 8 MPa, the residual strength is about 1∼2 MPa, the elastic modulus is about 200∼2000 MPa, and the porosity is about 3∼5%. The CPB with slurry concentration of 74% and 76% and cement‐tailings ratio of 1 : 4 and 1 : 6 is more reasonable, and the relevant mechanical parameters are more stable.

The combined mine backfill–geothermal (CMBG) system can be used to effectively extract geothermal energy by installing a heat exchange tube (HET) in the underground backfilled stopes of mines, which can be used as the heat supply for buildings in mines and the surrounding areas. The efficient performance of this system strongly depends on the thermal exchange process between the HET and its surrounding cemented paste backfill body (CPB). In this study, a validated simulation model is established to investigate the heat exchange performance of CPB, in which the nonuniformly distributed thermal properties in CPB are fully considered. The results indicate that the increase in the porosity has a negative effect on the heat exchange performance of CPB. With the increase in the porosity, the decreased rate of the conductive heat transfer in CPB could be up to approximately 18%. In conditions with seepage flow, the heat transfer capacity of CPB could be effectively improved. Generally, a higher hydraulic conductivity corresponds to a higher heat transfer performance of CPB. When the seepage velocity rose from 2 × 10−6 to 6 × 10−6 m/s, the thermal conductivity of CPB achieved a 114% increase from 1.843 to 3.957 W/(m·K). Furthermore, it was found that the thermal energy accumulates along the seepage flow direction, enhancing the thermal influencing radius of the HET in this direction. Thus, the arrangement of HETs should fully take into account the seepage flow effect. This proposed simulation model could provide a reference for parameter determination and optimization of CMBG systems.
