Tea (Camellia sinensis L.), as one of the most important cash crops in China, plays an important role in increasing farmers’ incomes and guaranteeing a high quality of life. Tea production has been greatly influenced by both climate change and economic development in China. However, without a scientific understanding of the interaction mechanism of climate change and the impetus from rapid economic development on tea production practices in China, it is difficult to take adaptive actions to meet the climate change challenges for the tea industry. In this paper, we firstly assessed the potential impacts of climate change on tea climate suitability by empirical formula calculation using meteorological data; then, the effects from the additional climatic stress due to warming on tea production were detected with the annual statistical tea yield record on a municipal level. The contribution of socioeconomic development to the tea industry was evaluated with the comparison of the movement of China’s national economy’s and tea industry’s gravity center during the period of 1987–2017. Finally, a conceptual adaptation framework was built to demonstrate the interaction mechanisms between climate change, tea production, and the economic development. The results showed that there was a negative impact of climate change on tea production in mainland China, with the percentage of high tea climate suitability (>0.9) areas dropping by 45% to 32%, while opportunities of enlarging the tea cultivating area emerged in the north tea production region where the tea climate suitability increased. We found that the tea planting area expanded northwards from 33° N in 1987 to 35° N in 2017 to take advantage of the favorable climatic resources due to warming, and tea planting decreased at an altitude of 100–400 m while increasing to higher altitude of 400–2000 m to avoid hot temperature damage and seek the optimum environment in high mountainous areas for tea production. In addition, the tea production moved westward along the longitude, decreasing obviously at 117–121° E while increasing significantly at 98–104° E and 107–110° E. Meanwhile, the tea production gravity center showed a westward movement consistent with the national economic gravity center moving trend, which means that tea industry development was driven by multiple socioeconomic factors and climatic forcings. A conceptual framework was built in this paper, aiming to show a robust adaptation mechanism for the tea system to maximize the benefits and minimize the damages from the altered climatic resources under rapid economic development in mainland China. The results in this study would help deepen the understanding of the adaptation process and practices for tea production in mainland China.

Extreme hot temperature is dangerous to the bioeconomy, and would worsen with time. Ambient heatwaves accompanied by unusual droughts are major threats to poverty eradication in Tanzania. Due to sparsity of observation data and proper heatwave detection metrics, there has been a paucity of knowledge about heatwave events in Tanzania. In this study, the Heatwave Magnitude Index daily (HWMId) was adopted to quantitatively analyze heatwave characteristics throughout Tanzania at mid-21st century (2041–2070) and end of 21st century (2071–2100), relative to the reference period (1983–2012) using the CHIRTS-daily quasi-global high-resolution temperature dataset and climate simulations from a multi-modal ensemble of median scenarios (RCP4.5, from CORDEX-Africa). The results showed that moderate to super-extreme heatwaves occurred in Tanzania between 1983 and 2012, particularly in 1999, when ultra-extreme heatwaves (HWMId > 32) occurred in the Lake Victoria basin. It is projected that by mid-21st century, the upper category of HWMId would be hotter and longer, and would occur routinely in Tanzania. The spatial extent of all of the HWMId categories is projected to range from 34% to 73% by the end of the 21st century with a duration of 8 to 35 days, compared to 1 to 5 days during the reference period. These findings will contribute to increasing public awareness of the need for adaptation.

As a main grain production area in China, Northeast China (NEC) is highly influenced by the higher warming trend than elsewhere in China or even the globe. As the warming trend goes on, scientific understanding of the changes of thermal conditions in NEC will be essential for taking agricultural adaptation measures. In this paper, the high-resolution (25 km) corrected outputs of PRECIS (Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies) under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) scenario were used to analyze the changes of the agro-climatic thermal resources in NEC. Results showed that accumulated temperature ≥10 °C (AT10) could increase by 300–500 °C·day, 500–900 °C·day, and 750–1000 °C·day in 2011–2040 (2020s), 2041–2070 (2050s), and 2071–2100 (2080s), respectively, relative to the baseline period of 1961–1990. The potential growing season (PGS) would then be prolonged by 11–19 days, 23–35 days, and 25–37 days in 2020s, 2050s and 2080s, respectively, compared to baseline. The spatial features for the changes of thermal indices would show a large increase of AT10 and an extension of PGS and Frost-free period (FFP) in mountainous areas compared to plains; the increment of AT10 would be greater in southern NEC than that in the north, with over 1000 °C·day in the southern parts and 700–800 °C·day in the northern parts in the 2080s. Additionally, the three thermal indices would increase rapidly from 2020s to 2050s compared to the period from 2050s to the 2080s, coincides with the greenhouse gas concentrations peak around the mid-period of the 21st century, and the decline towards the end of the 21st century under RCP4.5 forcing. The results of this paper could act as a guide to taking advantage of increasing thermal resources in NEC, and would be helpful for local practitioners in decision-making.

Introduction: Climate change is expected to affect crop production and grain quality by altering the environmental conditions that define crop climatic niches. However, the spatial distribution and future dynamics of climatic suitability for test-weight-defined high-quality wheat in China remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to characterize the climatic suitability of high-test-weight (High-TW) wheat and assess its potential changes under future climate scenarios. Methods: High-TW wheat was defined as wheat with a test weight (TW) ≥ 750 g L -1 . Long-term wheat quality monitoring records, WorldClim bioclimatic variables, BCC-CSM2-MR-based future climate projections, and an optimized MaxEnt model were used to characterize the baseline suitability pattern, identify dominant climatic predictors, and project changes under four future climate scenarios. Results: The model showed strong discrimination under random holdout evaluation, with a mean test AUC of 0.936 and a continuous Boyce index of 0.9702. The minimum temperature of the coldest month (Bio6) was the dominant predictor, contributing 55.3% to the model, indicating the importance of winter thermal conditions in the climatic niche associated with High-TW wheat. Under the 1970–2000 baseline climate, high-suitability areas were mainly concentrated in the north-central Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, broadly corresponding to traditional production regions of strong- and medium-strong-gluten wheat. Under the BCC-CSM2-MR projections, the broad spatial pattern remained relatively stable, while changes occurred mainly in the composition and peripheral distribution of suitability classes. By 2081–2100, high-suitability area increased under all four scenarios, with the largest relative increase under SSP126 (+12.35%). Centroid shifts were modest and scenario-dependent rather than proportional to emission intensity, with the largest late-century displacement reaching approximately 48 km under SSP370. Discussion: Future climate change may primarily reorganize the internal structure of climatic suitability while maintaining the broad national-scale pattern of High-TW wheat suitability. These findings provide a national-scale climatic-suitability perspective for High-TW wheat zoning, regional adaptation, and future production-planning assessments in China.
