Transposing the process scale from laboratory to industrial conditions is a difficult issue that applies to many sectors of the industry. As far as electropolishing of stainless steel is concerned, the limitations connected with a significant increase in the area of electropolished surface should be considered, along with the possibility of defects that may emerge. This paper compares the results of electropolishing of stainless steel in the laboratory and in industrial conditions. For the analyzed conditions, it was determined that the best results, both in laboratory and industrial conditions, were obtained at temperature of 35 °C and current density of 8 A·dm−2. High temperatures resulted in the emergence of defects on the surface, in particular for industrial samples. The defects were visualized by metallographic images with Nomarski contrast and atomic force microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests were used to analyze the composition of the passive layer on the electropolished surfaces.

The amount of industrial pollution entering the environment and its impact on living organisms is an ongoing concern. At the same time, due to an increasing awareness, new methods of wastewater treatment are being explored that are not only effective but also environmentally acceptable. Meeting environmental standards for permitted concentrations is a necessity, but investigating the effects of wastewater on living organisms is also an important issue. In this paper, the influence of metal ions (Fe(III), Cr(III), Ni(II), Cu(II)) in industrial wastewater from electropolishing of stainless steel on Daphnia magna has been investigated. Daphnids have been exposed to wastewater both before and after treatment (Ca(OH)2 precipitation, sorption with peat). Immobilisation in a 48-h acute toxicity test and EC50 has been determined. In the case of studied industrial wastewater, the organic content (expressed as total organic carbon) of the effluent has a positive impact in terms of the survival of D. magna and increases the range of heavy metal concentrations tolerated by them. The application of a two-stage process with Ca(OH)2 neutralisation followed by sorption with peat allows for the removal of almost 100% of metal ions from the wastewater. The reduction obtained ensured a limited impact on D. magna and a decrease in immobilisation to less than 10%. Proper execution of the wastewater treatment process ensures a reduction of its negative impact on living organisms.

Austenitic stainless steels are used widely in many fields due to their good mechanical properties and high resistance to corrosion. This work focuses on the reconstruction of the passive film after scratching. The purpose of the study was to compare changes in the rate of passive layer reconstruction and to discuss the effect of both the type of material and its electrochemical treatment on the reconstruction of the passive layer for two types of stainless steel: 304 and 316. The XPS tests performed indicate a significantly higher Cr/Fe ratio for the samples after the electropolishing process of 1.41–1.88 compared to the as-received samples of 0.82–0.86. After 2–3 min of sputtering the surface with Ar+ ions, a decrease in chromium content can be observed, with a simultaneous increase in nickel content, visible especially for the electropolished samples. A new approach in the conducted research was to scratch the test samples under controlled conditions, then evaluate the dynamics of the passive layer reconstruction using the AFM method, and then confront the obtained results with XPS measurements for the corresponding samples. For the as-received samples (2B finish) and those after surface treatment, regardless of the level of contamination of the electropolishing process bath, the reconstruction time was similar, which was approximately 2 h, although certain differences in the process dynamics were noticeable.

Process baths used for electropolishing and pickling of stainless steel have become increasingly contaminated with heavy metal ions over time. There is still lack of research on the neutralization of this type of technological wastewater with high concentrations of metal ions and containing complexing compounds, which significantly hinders their effective treatment. The aim of this paper is to study how the selected methods of heavy metals removal will affect the quality of the treated, industrial post-galvanic sewage from pickling and electropolishing of chromium-nickel steel on a laboratory and technical scale. The research used sodium sulphide or a decomplexing agent based on organic sulphur to neutralize wastewater containing triethanolamine or glycerol. Treatment of electropolishing wastewater poses a challenge. Nevertheless, wastewater with glycerol is easier to neutralize than those containing triethanolamine. In the industrial scale the use of a decomplexing agent is necessary to achieve the required nickel values in the wastewater after treatment below 1 ppm. Even in the case of high concentrations of nickel ions in raw wastewater, the neutralization process of the wastewater originating only from pickling alone was effective. The search for effective methods of neutralization of mixed wastewater is especially important in industrial conditions, where it is not always possible to completely separate these two types of sewage. The paper also presents the results of the composition of post-neutralization sludge, which may be useful in planning further management and disposal of this type of waste.

In this work, the removal of NOM (natural organic matter) as represented by humic acid by means of electrospun nanofiber adsorptive membranes (ENAMs) is described. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was used for the preparation of ENAMs incorporating silica nanoparticles as adsorbents. The addition of silica to the polymer left visible changes on the structural morphology and fibers’ properties of the membrane. The membrane samples were characterized by pure water permeability, contact angle measurement, SEM, XPS, and XRD. This study assesses the preliminary performance of PAN-Si membranes for the removal of natural organic matter (NOM). The membrane rejected the humic acid, a surrogate of NOM, from 69.57% to 87.5%.

Long‐term exploitation of industrial electropolishing baths may contribute to the emergence of surface defects and may limit the range of applicable current densities. Due to this, extending the time of use of industrial baths is a major challenge. The application of electrochemical reduction in the process of reduction industrial baths enabled to reduce its contamination and, as a result, to enhance the surface quality of electropolished samples of grade 304 stainless steel. The contamination influence of the electropolishing bath on such parameters of the electropolished samples as roughness, gloss, mass reduction, and corrosion resistance was compared. The conducted tests included reduction of the contaminated industrial bath with use of cathodic reduction and monitoring of bath contamination with use of emission spectrometry ICP‐OES. Potentiodynamic tests in 0.5 M chlorine environment with the aim to determine the influence of electrochemical reduction of the plating bath on surface resistance demonstrated that the pitting corrosion resistance of samples electropolished in a bath after reduction was reduced by approximately 0.1 V in comparison with samples electropolished before reduction. The calculations conducted for 24 corrosion resistance measurements demonstrated that differences between the results were significant. Bath reduction leads to improved roughness and gloss, even by approximately 500 GU (gloss units). At the same time, mass reduction decreases even by 13% in comparison with the process conducted in the bath before reduction. This may have a positive influence by slowing down the bath contamination process and, as a result, it reduces negative environmental impact. Another argument that supports the reduction of industrial baths is slowing down the process of cathode contamination during the electropolishing process. In industrial conditions, this may extend the possibility to conduct the process without the need for cathode reduction or replacement.
