This article proposes a novel flux weakening scheme for five-phase PMSM with active harmonic currents injection. The conventional flux weakening control schemes applied in the five-phase PMSM do not consider the voltage limit drop in the fundamental subspace due to the harmonic current controller. Thus, the derivation between the reference current trajectory and actual current trajectory would cause the current distortion when applying deadbeat current controller (DBCC). This article analyses the precise voltage limit circles considering the voltage drop caused by the resistance and harmonic currents control at first. Then, a feed-forward flux weakening control algorithm is designed to optimize the current trajectory online. The gradient descent method is used to ensure the converge speed and stability of the optimized current trajectory. Thirdly, the peak value of phase currents would be clipped by the harmonic currents to prevent the inverter current limit, where a new non-linear harmonic current controller is designed to precisely control the harmonic currents. Finally, the DBCC and modified SVPWM technology are utilized to generate the duty cycle. The proposed improved flux weakening control strategy is successfully implemented in an interior five-phase PMSM, and the performance demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy.

This article presents a novel magnetic-geared direct-drive machine (MGDM) with V-shaped permanent magnets (PMs) installed on its rotor. By extending the inner rotor shaft and connecting it to a prime motor, the torque and power density of the proposed MGDM are boosted. In addition, compared with the conventional MGDM with surface-mounted PMs (SPMs), the proposed MGDM with V-shaped PMs has a more robust rotor structure to cope with extreme operating conditions. The operating principle and structure requirement of this MGDM are first derived. Then, the geometrical parameters are optimized via a three-stage multiobjective optimization method to maximize output torque and efficiency and minimize torque ripple via the genetic algorithm (GA) and finite element analysis (FEA) combined optimization strategy. Furthermore, the proposed MGDM is artfully integrated into hybrid electric ships (HESs) to construct an onboard integrated power system (OB-IPS). Since the proposed system possesses various operating modes to cope with practical operating conditions, it enjoys a high systematic efficiency and good dynamic performance. Finally, a prototype is fabricated and tested with various operating modes by referring to the practical navigation cycle of an HES. The experimental results validate the feasibility of the proposed MGDM for being applied in HESs.

Through the zero-sequence current (ZSC) hysteresis controller, the existing ZSC hysteresis control-based space vector modulation (SVM) strategy can provide a satisfactory ZSC suppression effect and greatly reduce the complexity for the open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous machine (OW-PMSM) drive with common dc bus. However, the corresponding linear modulation range is reduced by 12.7% compared with the middle hexagon space vector modulation (MH-SVM) for the OW-PMSM drive. To this end, this letter improves the linear modulation range of the existing strategy. The candidate voltage vectors for each sector are re-selected, and three active voltage vectors will be employed in the extended feasible region. While ensuring the ZSC hysteresis control, the linear modulation range of the proposed strategy is the same as the MH-SVM. At last, experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy. The proposed strategy can suppress the ZSC effectively, and the corresponding maximum speed is the same as the counterpart of the MH-SVM.

Harmonic currents always exist in a dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine due to the inverter nonlinearity, nonsinusoidal back-electromotive force, and external disturbances. This article proposes a deadbeat predictive harmonic current control (DPHCC) method to suppress the harmonic currents. The DPHCC method can directly calculate the harmonic control voltage based on the sampled harmonic currents and the machine model. Thus, the steady-state and transient-state performance of harmonic current control can be improved. Further, a disturbance observer is designed to avoid the influence of inaccurate machine parameters and other unmodeled disturbances. The observer is designed based on discrete-time sliding mode theory and an improved sliding mode reaching law. The stability of the observer has been analyzed, and the value range of the observer parameters has been determined theoretically. Finally, experimental results have been presented to verify the effectiveness of harmonic current suppression for the proposed control system.

The series-end winding permanent magnet synchronous machine (SW-PMSM) drive system is a new drive topology where the phase windings are connected in series. The generic carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (CBPWM) solution of SW-PMSMs will further promote their applications and avoid the computationally complex space vector PWM in multiphase SW-PMSMs. However, the existing CBPWM solution is complex and designed for symmetrical machines. Moreover, the current approach’s lack of the overmodulation method limits its application in the traction system. This article proposes an improved generic CBPWM solution for SW-PMSMs, which utilizes the vector space decomposition concept to extend the application in both symmetrical and asymmetrical machines. First, we will introduce the concept of the virtual duty axis and divide the modulation process into two steps, where the leg voltage sequence is initialized with reference phase voltages. Then, the virtual duty cycle is utilized to ensure the feasibility of the leg voltage sequence. Furthermore, we will provide an adaptative overmodulation scheme to ensure the stable fundamental currents in the whole speed range and improve the bus voltage utilization. Finally, the experimental results in three machines verify that the proposed solution can obtain better performance with lower switching frequency and have overmodulation capability.

This article is devoted to developing a unique series-winding drive (SWD) topology, analyzing and implementing its control schemes for asymmetrical multiphase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). Proposed SWDs have higher voltage utilization than ordinary wye or delta connection, but vary with the number of inverter legs and connection sequence. Also, they have a simpler topology, fewer inverter legs, and power modules than the open-end winding drives. The article selects the typical asymmetrical six-phase (ASP) PMSM as the target. The complex space vector mapping is screened and simplified by unified hexadecimal coding for both eight-leg and seven-leg drives. Given the multiple suspaces in ASP-PMSM, a multistage decoupling space vector modulation scheme is proposed and improved for SWDs. It incorporates the processes of vector synthetization, cost function minimization, and zero-sequence compensation. Prototype fabrication and control experiments are carried out. Results show that the proposed MSD SVM is applicable to all connection sequences. It can suppress the harmonic current to a quite low level, in both steady-state and dynamic states. Also, this article discusses the current burden of the inverter and provides suggestions.
