Above-ground biomass (AGB) and the leaf area index (LAI) are important indicators for the assessment of crop growth, and are therefore important for agricultural management. Although improvements have been made in the monitoring of crop growth parameters using ground- and satellite-based sensors, the application of these technologies is limited by imaging difficulties, complex data processing, and low spatial resolution. Therefore, this study evaluated the use of hyperspectral indices, red-edge parameters, and their combination to estimate and map the distributions of AGB and LAI for various growth stages of winter wheat. A hyperspectral sensor mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle was used to obtain vegetation indices and red-edge parameters, and stepwise regression (SWR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) methods were used to accurately estimate the AGB and LAI based on these vegetation indices, red-edge parameters, and their combination. The results show that: (i) most of the studied vegetation indices and red-edge parameters are significantly highly correlated with AGB and LAI; (ii) overall, the correlations between vegetation indices and AGB and LAI, respectively, are stronger than those between red-edge parameters and AGB and LAI, respectively; (iii) Compared with the estimations using only vegetation indices or red-edge parameters, the estimation of AGB and LAI using a combination of vegetation indices and red-edge parameters is more accurate; and (iv) The estimations of AGB and LAI obtained using the PLSR method are superior to those obtained using the SWR method. Therefore, combining vegetation indices with red-edge parameters and using the PLSR method can improve the estimation of AGB and LAI.

The resulting maps of land use classification obtained by pixel-based methods often have salt-and-pepper noise, which usually shows a certain degree of cluttered distribution of classification image elements within the region. This paper carries out a study on crop classification and identification based on time series Sentinel images and object-oriented methods and takes the crop recognition and classification of the National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park in Jalaid Banner, Inner Mongolia, as the research object. It uses the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform to extract time series Sentinel satellite radar and optical remote sensing images combined with simple noniterative clustering (SNIC) multiscale segmentation with random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithms to classify and identify major regional crops based on radar and spectral features. Compared with the pixel-based method, the combination of SNIC multiscale segmentation and random forest classification based on time series radar and optical remote sensing images can effectively reduce the salt-and-pepper phenomenon in classification and improve crop classification accuracy with the highest accuracy of 98.66 and a kappa coefficient of 0.9823. This study provides a reference for large-scale crop identification and classification work.

Above-ground biomass (AGB) is an important indicator for monitoring crop growth and plays a vital role in guiding agricultural management, so it must be determined rapidly and nondestructively. The present study investigated the extraction from UAV hyperspectral images of multiple variables, including canopy original spectra (COS), first-derivative spectra (FDS), vegetation indices (VIs), and crop height (CH) to estimate the potato AGB via the machine-learning methods of support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and Gaussian process regression (GPR). High-density point clouds were combined with three-dimensional spatial information from ground control points by using structures from motion technology to generate a digital surface model (DSM) of the test field, following which CH was extracted based on the DSM. Feature bands in sensitive spectral regions of COS and FDS were automatically identified by using a Gaussian process regression-band analysis tool that analyzed the correlation of the COS and FDS with the AGB in each growth period. In addition, the 16 Vis were separately analyzed for correlation with the AGB of each growth period to identify highly correlated Vis and excluded highly autocorrelated variables. The three machine-learning methods were used to estimate the potato AGB at each growth period and their results were compared separately based on the COS, FDS, VIs, and combinations thereof with CH. The results showed that (i) the correlations of COS, FDS, and VIs with AGB all gradually improved when going from the tuber-formation stage to the tuber-growth stage and thereafter deteriorated. The VIs were most strongly correlated with the AGB, followed by FDS, and then by COS. (ii) The CH extracted from the DSM was consistent with the measured CH. (iii) For each growth stage, the accuracy of the AGB estimates produced by a given machine-learning method depended on the combination of model variables used (VIs, FDS, COS, and CH). (iv) For any given set of model variables, GPR produced the best AGB estimates in each growth period, followed by RF, and finally by SVM. (v) The most accurate AGB estimate was achieved in the tuber-growth stage and was produced by combining spectral information and CH and applying the GPR method. The results of this study thus reveal that UAV hyperspectral images can be used to extract CH and crop-canopy spectral information, which can be used with GPR to accurately estimate potato AGB and thereby accurately monitor crop growth.

The Loess Plateau is a typical ecologically sensitive area that can easily be perturbed by the effects of human activities and global climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to develop tools to monitor the environmental quality in the LP quickly and accurately. To reveal the spatio-temporal changes in environmental quality in the LP from 2000 to 2020, we used the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products on the Google Earth Engine platform and constructed the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) through principal component analysis (PCA). Then, Sen–Mann–Kendall methods were applied to determine the changing trend of the environmental quality of the LP. Finally, natural and anthropogenic factors affecting the environmental quality were probed using a geographical detector model. The results showed that: (1) the average RSEI values in 2000, 2010 and 2020 were 0.396, 0.468 and 0.511, respectively, displaying an upward trend from 2000 to 2020, with a growth rate of 0.005 year−1. The overall environment quality was moderate (0.4–0.6). (2) In terms of spatial distribution, the environmental quality was excellent in the southeast and poor in the northwest of the LP. The areas with improved environmental quality (84.51%) were located in all the counties, whereas the areas with degraded environmental quality (8.11%) occurred in the north and southeast of the study area. (3) Greenness, heat, wetness, dryness and land use types were prominent factors affecting RSEI throughout the study period; additionally, the total industrial gross domestic product showed a growing influence. The contribution of multi-factor interaction was stronger than that of single factors. The results will provide a reference and a new research perspective for local environmental protection and regional planning.

Land-use maps are thematic materials reflecting the current situation, geographical diversity, and classification of land use and are an important scientific foundation that can assist decision-makers in adjusting land-use structures, agricultural zoning, regional planning, and territorial improvement according to local conditions. Spectral reflectance and radar signatures of time series are important in distinguishing land-use types. However, their impact on the accuracy of land-use mapping and decision making remains unclear. Also, the many spatial and temporal heterogeneous landscapes in southern Xinjiang limit the accuracy of existing land-use classification products. Therefore, our objective herein is to develop reliable land-use products for the highly heterogeneous environment of the southern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region using the freely available public Sentinel image datasets. Specifically, to determine the effect of temporal features on classification, several classification scenarios with different temporal features were developed using multi-temporal Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and terrain data in order to assess the importance, contribution, and impact of different temporal features (spectral and radar) on land-use classification models and determine the optimal time for land-use classification. Furthermore, to determine the optimal method and parameters suitable for local land-use classification research, we evaluated and compared the performance of three decision-tree-related classifiers (classification and regression tree, random forest, and gradient tree boost) with respect to classifying land use. Yielding the highest average overall accuracy (95%), kappa (95%), and F1 score (98%), we determined that the gradient tree boost model was the most suitable for land-use classification. Of the four individual periods, the image features in autumn (25 September to 5 November) were the most accurate for all three classifiers in relation to identifying land-use classes. The results also show that the inclusion of multi-temporal image features consistently improves the classification of land-use products, with pre-summer (28 May–20 June) images providing the most significant improvement (the average OA, kappa, and F1 score of all the classifiers were improved by 6%, 7%, and 3%, respectively) and fall images the least (the average OA, kappa, and F1 score of all the classifiers were improved by 2%, 3%, and 2%, respectively). Overall, these analyses of how classifiers and image features affect land-use maps provide a reference for similar land-use classifications in highly heterogeneous areas. Moreover, these products are designed to describe the highly heterogeneous environments in the study area, for example, identifying pear trees that affect local economic development, and allow for the accurate mapping of alpine wetlands in the northwest.

With environmental deterioration, natural resource scarcity, and rapid population growth, mankind is facing severe global food security problems. To meet future needs, it is necessary to accelerate progress in breeding for new varieties with high yield and strong resistance. However, the traditional phenotypic screening methods have some disadvantages, such as destructive, inefficient, low-dimensional, labor-intensive and cumbersome, which seriously hinder the development of field breeding. Breeders urgently need a high-throughput technique for acquiring and evaluating phenotypic data that can efficiently screen out excellent phenotypic traits from large-scale genotype populations. In the present study, we used an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) high-throughput phenotyping (HTP) platform to collect RGB and multispectral images for a breeding program and acquired multiple phenotypic components (or traits), such as plant height, normalized difference vegetation index, biomass accumulation, plant-height growth rate, lodging, and leaf color. By implementing self-organizing maps and principal components analysis biplots to establish phenotypic map and similarity, we proposed an UAV-assisted HTP framework for preselecting maize (Zee mays L.) phenotypic components (or traits). This framework gives breeders additional information to allow them to quickly identify and preselect plants that have genotypes conferring desirable phenotypic components out of thousands of field plots. The present study also demonstrates that remote sensing is a powerful tool with which to acquire abundant phenotypic components. By using these rich phenotypic components, breeders should be able to more effectively identify and select superior genotypes.
