Literature review provides extensive studies focused on the life cycle assessment of wastewater treatment plants. However, few studies have a mitigation perspective, especially concerning water–energy–nutrient nexus or resource recovery systems for warm-weather countries. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate 10 wastewater treatment plants, based on an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket followed by a high rate aerobic pond. The recovery of biosolids, energy, and water, thermal and alkaline hydrolysis, CO2 recirculation to supplement carbon, and a membrane system for microalgae harvesting are tested. The paper uses the OpenLCA 1.9 software to evaluate the following categories: global warming potential and global temperature change potential (IPCC 2013); cumulative energy demand (Ecoinvent); acidification, human toxicity, marine and freshwater eutrophication, marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecotoxicity (ReCiPe (H) v.1.13 2008). Input data consist of a background (from Ecoinvent 3.5 and literature) and foreground mix. The work asses the following environmental aspects: energy, chemical materials use, transportation, and emissions. The results indicate that the scenario considering CO2 recirculation combined with thermal hydrolysis, with higher biosolids and energy production, has the lowest environmental impact for all categories. This result was due to materials manufacture and transportation, and comparative inputs added (natural gas energy, water, and fertilizer). Additionally, transportation variation only affects highly the iron chloride supply scenario. Emissions variation impacted directly on both IPCC categories for all scenarios, due to biogas losses accounted on the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket and anaerobic digester, while energy variation did not affect profoundly any of the scenarios.

The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of the addition of polypropylene, polyester, polyamide, aramid and aramid pulp fibers on the behavior of concretes subjected to high temperatures. For that, test specimens with fiber additions were made at a rate of 2 kg/m3 and submitted to temperatures in furnace, as well as to high temperatures through direct fire test. Columns were also built and subjected to a live fire simulator belonging to the Espírito Santo Fire Department - Brazil. Microstructural and mechanical properties were analyzed. It has been observed that the fibers may influence the properties of the concrete and that fire tests with standard fire load may be an alternative or complementary analysis of concrete subjected to elevated temperatures.

Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive method for environmental product evaluation. This study aims to analyse the development of the research on the use of the LCA methodology in buildings and to identify the knowledge gaps in this field. For this, articles were selected through a systematic review of the literature. The results show that LCA is only a simplification of reality. The application of the methodology in buildings is recent and requires more research to face the remaining challenges, such as standardising of methodology and inventories; optimising data acquisition and comparing studies; new methodologies aimed at reducing the limitations of traditional LCA, including other parameters such as the dynamic characteristics, so as to establish benchmarks for different buildings.

Approximately 54% of Brazilian electricity consumption is attributed to the residential, commercial, public, and service sectors; thus, it is important to formulate strategies that promote both the energy efficiency of buildings and a better understanding of their thermal and energy performance. Within the scope of the Brazilian Labeling Program (Programa Brasileiro de Etiquetagem—PBE), technical regulations were developed to classify the level of energy efficiency of buildings. This article defines four representative buildings based on an analysis of the most common typologies that represent the multi-family residential buildings of a neighborhood. A total of 663 buildings were mapped and classified. The four representative buildings were evaluated for their thermal and energy performance in relation to Building Labeling (Quality Technical Regulation–Residential: RTQ-R). The results for the housing units (HUs) were analyzed for cooling degree-hours (cooling for summer), relative consumption for refrigeration (artificial cooling), performance of the envelope in summer, and the final classification of the HUs by the water heating system; the results for the entire multi-family building were analyzed. These results provide data that will contribute to an efficient policy for the housing industry and to future studies on the incorporation of measures that promote energy efficiency.

Several countries have developed tools with criteria and evaluations to grant, through the environmental certification, a more sustainable undertaking, with quality and productivity for its users. The tools were developed for different needs and objectives, which makes it difficult to make a direct comparison, in addition to having specific demands for each region. This study aims to make a comparative analysis between some tools of greater international knowledge and to propose new parameters for the water use and management category, taking into account the design and operational phase, the water distribution, and the demands for 2025. Consequently, this study proposed the creation of an exclusive environmental tool for the management and water use, providing a seal that may be applied to any project and adopted by water work systems as an incentive to reduce the consumption of drinking water, to use alternative sources, and to decrease liquid effluents.

In this study, mass concrete samples with tire rubber chips (rubberized concrete) were evaluated in order to determine if the addition of rubber particles would enhance cracking strength due to volumetric variations of thermal origin, compared to a reference concrete, without rubber. Samples of the concretes studied were initially tested to characterize their thermal and mechanical properties. The test results were used as parameters for the analysis of the thermo-mechanic behavior of the rubberized concrete by means of a software that determined the thermal and stress response on a bi-dimensional dominion of a structural element of hypothetical geometry, typical of dam construction, applying FEM (finite element method) analysis. The results obtained indicated that, although the maximum temperatures expected are similar for both concretes (reference and rubberized), those containing tire rubber chips are subjected to lower tensile stresses, about half the stress generated in the control concrete. This behavior indicates that the addition of tire rubber chips in concrete is an efficient strategy to minimize the risk of cracking due to thermal stresses.

This article presents a model for penetration of chloride by diffusion in reinforced concrete structures based on the solution of the Fick's 2nd Law, using the finite element method (FEM) in two-dimensional domain. This model predicts the time, in a given situation, so that a certain limit of chlorides for depassivation of reinforcement is reached, characterizing the end of service life. Several approaches for the chloride surface concentration and for the diffusion coefficient are used, parameter which must be corrected due to the effects of temperature, solar radiation, exposure time, and relative humidity. Moreover, a parametric analysis is carried out in order to study the factors involved and their impact on the ingress of chlorides by diffusion, contributing to a better understanding of the phenomenon. In addition, the developed model is applied to the cities of Vitória (ES) and Florianópolis (SC) to analyze the service life for different concrete covers, making a comparison with the Brazilian standard.

The sector of ornamental rocks produces significant volume of waste during the sawing of the blocks and demand to find ways to recycle, given its environmental impact. Considering the possibilities of use of industrial by-products as mineral admixtures, aiming at sustainable development in the construction industry, this paper aims to study the performance of the processing sludge of ornamental rocks and grinding after heat treatment, based on their potential application as partial substitute for cement. The residue was characterized, cast and milled to produce glassy material. Was analyzed the mechanical performance and pozzolanic activity with partial replacement of cement by waste in natural condition and after heat treatment in mortars for comparison. The results were promising, so it was possible to verify that after heat treatment, the treated waste is presented as a material with pozzolanic characteristics.
